  • Objectives : To compare the quality improvement of the abstracts of original articles, according to the revised manuscript format, of the Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine (Korean J Pre Med) was adopted in 1999. Methods : A total 63 abstracts for 1997, and 49 for 2001, were selected as the original articles from the Kor J Pre Med. This study was carried out by the separate-sample pretest-posttest design. The quality of the abstracts was measured by a checklist of Narine' evaluation criteria, and the other information related to the articles were also surveyed by e-mail and fax or telephone using a self-made Questionnaire, From the response rate, a total of 62 abstracts for 1997 and 49 for 2901 were finally analyzed. Results : The mean number of words in an abstract decreased from 285 in 1997, to 250 by 2001. The mean number of key words per abstract decreased from 3.9 in 1997, to 3.6 by 2001. The mean number of inappropriate usage of key words per abstract, by the MeSH standard, decreased from 1.9 in 1997, to 0.4 by 2001 Also, the overall mean score of abstract quality increased from 0.54 in 1997 to 0.61 by 2001. The range of scores for the abstract quality was better in 2001 ($0.40{\sim}0.77$) than in 1997 ($0.20{\sim}0.81$). From the multiple regression analyses of the 1997 and 2001 databases, the intervention of the manuscript format's revision, and the number of English words to the quality score of the .abstract, were the only statistically significant factors, Conclusions : In conclusion, the quality of abstracts in the Kor J Pre Med has improved since the revised manuscript format was adopted in 1999. The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine will continuously recommend proposals for more informative abstracts in their journal, and will evaluate the abstracts' content with quality criteria. Future studies should address these issues, and compare the quality of abstracts between different international and domestic journals.

  • Objective: The adhesion capabilities of different types of self-ligating brackets were measured with respect to Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. Methods: Five types of self-ligating brackets (Clippy-C; Mini Clippy; Clarity-SL; Speed; Damon 3) were used for the experiment group and composite resin brackets (Spirit-MB), metal brackets (Victory) and polycrystalline alumina brackets (Clarity) were used for the control group. In order to assess adhesion of bacteria to the brackets, the brackets were cultured for 3, 6 and 24 hours in media containing bacteria and 20% sucrose. Results: There was no statistic difference in adhesion amount of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus according to the types of brackets. A total adhesion amount according to bracket type was different. An extended incubation time increased adhesion amount. Observation under scanning electron microscope showed that Streptococcus sobrinus adhered more to Clippy-C and Victory rather than to Clarity-SL. Conclusions: Clarity-SL, a self-ligating esthetic bracket was confirmed to show lower bacterial adhesion to cariogenic bacteria, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus group than other self-ligating brackets or conventional brackets, which suggests that proper use of self-ligating esthetic brackets might even be better in preventing tooth surface decalcification.

  • Yoon et $al.^1$ presented an approximate mathmatical model to describe ammonia removal from an experimental batch reactor system with gaseous headspace. The development of the model was initially based on assuming instantaneous equilibrium between ammonia in the aqueous and gas phases. In the model, a "saturation factor, $\beta$" was defined as a constant and used to check whether the equilibrium assumption was appropriate. The authors used the trends established by the estimated $\beta$ values to conclude that the equilibrium assumption was not valid. The authors presented valuable experimental results obtained using a carefully designed system and the model used to analyze the results accounted for the following effects: speciation of ammonia between $NH_3$ and $NH^+_4$ as a function of pH; temperature dependence of the reactions constants; and air flow rate. In this article, an alternative model based on the exact solution of the governing mass-balance differential equations was developed and used to describe ammonia removal without relying on the use of the saturation factor. The modified model was also extended to mathematically describe the pH dependence of the ammonia removal rate, in addition to accounting for the speciation of ammonia, temperature dependence of reactions constants, and air flow rate. The modified model was used to extend the analysis of the original experimental data presented by Yoon et $al.^1$ and the results matched the theory in an excellent manner.

  • This article examines the Annulment Mechanism of arbitral awards rendered under the auspices of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). The primary feature in the ICSID and non-ICSID arbitration regarding the review of awards involves the unified nature of the ICSID system, as compared to the scattered and multi-layered system of review existing under arbitration rules, national legislation, and international convention. This unity can be perceived at different levels. The ICSID annulment mechanism entails only a set of rules; thus, only one set of application standards of review will be implemented, as opposed to sometimes conflicting layers of application rules, laws, and convention, as in the case of non-ICSID arbitration. However, some of the recent annulment decisions have raised serious questions about the breadth of annulment in practice, as opposed to its original design. Nonetheless, implementing a new system under the ICSID awards to be reviewed by an appellate court appears to create more problems than it solves. The potential impact of introducing that mechanism could result in a longer and more complex proceeding, with uncertain benefits.

  • The user's secret key can be retrieved by various side channel leakage informations occurred during the execution of cryptographic RSA exponentiation algorithm which is embedded on a security device. The collision-based power analysis attack known as a serious side channel threat can be accomplished by finding some collision pairs on a RSA power consumption trace. Recently, an RSA exponentiation algorithm was proposed as a countermeasure which is based on the window method adopted combination of message blinding and exponent splitting. In this paper, we show that this countermeasure provides approximately $2^{53}$ attack complexity, much lower than $2^{98}$ insisted in the original article, when the window size is two.

  • The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of essential oil mouthrinse and interdental brush for oral hygiene in orthodontic patient. 90 patients, with fixed orthodontic appliances, were divided into 3 groups(Group 1: patients who had only used toothbrush, group 2: toothbrush + essential oil mouthrinse, group 3: toothbrush + interdental brush). Then, plaque index(PI) and gingival index(GI) were evaluated at before(T0), 3 weeks after(Tl) and 6 weeks after(T2) the experiment. The present study revealed the following conclusions: (1) There was statistically significant decrease in PI and GI of groups 2 and 3 comparing to those of group 1 during 6 weeks.(p<0.05) (2) There was no significant difference in the level of decrease in PI and GI between group 2 and group 3.(p<0.05) The present study thus implied that use of mechanical or chemical aid such as interdental brush and mouth rinse in addition to toothbrushing may help maintaining oral hygiene in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment for prolonged duration.

  • The purpose of this review is to examine the performance of attachments used in implant-supported overdenture (IOD) in both clinical and in vitro settings and report the compiled findings, comparisons, and trends in the research literature. Articles published in PubMed on IOD attachment systems and performance were reviewed. Non-original articles were excluded. For each article included, the type of study, number of implants, number of attachment systems, and study outcome were recorded. Of the 283 articles found, 158 met the inclusion criteria. Ninety-four articles were clinical studies and 64 articles were in vitro studies. Studies on retention were the most common for in vitro studies, and four or more attachment systems were compared in most articles with significant differences in outcome. A clinical outcome of one attachment system was most common for clinical studies, while most studies had neutral outcomes overall. Ball attachment was the most commonly tested IOD attachment system. The trend in the literature showed that there is a large discrepancy between the study designs and outcomes between the clinical and the in vitro studies for IOD. Further clinical studies that can validate in vitro research should be encouraged to address this discrepancy between the two areas.

  • From January 1983 to December 1992, There were 1441 papers in the Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Among these papers, 783[54.3%] were original article or clinical analysis and 652[45.2%] were case reports. A total of 319 papers contained some statistical analysis. In 150 cases[47.0%] of these 319 papers, the statistical description was insufficient. Of the correctly described papers, 115[68%] had more than one statistical error. Of course, in many cases the errors were not considered to be severe, but they were often sufficient to raise doubts about some inferences. We suggest that authors should be more careful when they describe and apply statistical methods. If possible, authors should interpret results with statistical specialists. And we also suggest that our society have more extensive statistical refereeing system. This would at least prevent the worst errors from appearing in print. The last suggestion is elementary instruction in statistical methods during preclinical training.

  • In this article, we present a new DICOM object able to create image-based annotations in DICOM image. Since the proposed image-based annotation uses images themselves of annotation, various types like character, sketch, and scanning image, etc., can be imported into annotation easily. The proposed annotation is inserted into DICOM image directly but they do not influence original DICOM image quality by using independent data channel. The proposed annotation is expected to be very useful to medium and small clinics that cannot afford picture archiving and communication systems or electronic medical record.
