  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze for the patent application tendency in mibyeong. Mibyeong is a concept in Korean Medicine meaning sub-health state, and treatment of mibyeong can be understood as preventive medicine. This concept laid a foundation for the development of Korean, Japanese and Chinese traditional medicine. In this paper, we describe a meaningful data for efficient R&D through patent analysis of mibyeong focusing on the Korea, Japan and China. Method : We collected patents about mibyeong using Focust, IPDL search tools. We analyzed patents according to the year, topic, country and etc. Results & Conclusion : We collected 1,577 patents and selected 807 patents as useful patents. After detailed analysis on mibyeong patent, we got to know that research about mibyeong was a growing field. In the collected patents, the patents on treatment device(except treatment compositions) were the majority and system of providing information were the second largest. We think that the mibyeong field is growing at a fast pace with high activity, and this research should be updated annually.

  • Effects of Rhizoma gastrodiae on glucose oxidase-induced neurotoxicity was investigated in cultured newborn mouse spinal dorsal root ganglion(DRG) neurons that were treated in the media with or without glucose oxidase. In addition, the protective effect of Rhizoma gastrodiae extract against glucose oxidase-induced neurotoxicity was examined. Cytotoxic values were expressed as a percentage of number of living cells by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. In this paper, exposure of neurons to glucose oxidase resulted in a significant call death in a dose- and time-dependent manners in DRG neuron cultures. The decrease in cell viability induced by the glucose oxidase was blocked by Rhizoma gastrodiae extract. These results indicate that the neuroprotective effect of Rhizoma gastrodiae extract against glucose oxidase-induced neurotoxicity may result from a prevention or attenuation of oxidative damage induced by glucose oxidase.

  • We in this paper have constructed herb and formula ontologies. Herb instances and formula instances can be distinguished by nature, used part, effect, disease pattern, symptom, and formula and constituent herb, dosage, effect, disease pattern, symptom, and medical book, respectively. The knowledge for herbs and formulas in ontology is formalized with the distinguishable elements and their relations. Based on the herb and formula ontologies, we propose the three reasoning rules as follows: In herb ontology, the relation between herb and disease can be reasoned if there are the relation between herb and effect, and effect and disease. In formula ontology, there are two reasoning rules. First, if each constituent herb, dosage, effect, disease pattern, and symptom of two formulas is same, it can be reasoned that two formulas are same though the medical books of the formulas are different. Second, if each constituent herb and dosage is same in two formula, it can be reasoned that each formula has all of effects, disease patterns, and symptoms of formulas. In future study, we study other ontologies such as disease ontology with respect to Korean Medicine and define the reasoning rules about the ontologies.

  • With the advancement of information technology and increasing diversity in medical field, there are ongoing researches on ontology based intelligent medical system in Oriental medicine field. Intelligent diagnostic support system uses ontology to give a structure to complex medical knowledge and personal medical history so that we can make diagnosis more scientific, and provide better medical services. In this paper, we suggest an ontology that structuralize three knowledge types basic medical data, clinical trial data, and personal health information, which can be used as important information for individually tailored diagnosis. Especially in Oriental medicine diagnosis, both patient's symptoms of illness and physical constitution play a great role; it can lead to distinct diagnosis depending on their combination. Thus, it is much needed to have a diagnostic support system that uses personal health history and physical constitution along with basic medical data and clinical trial data in the field. In this paper, we implemented an Oriental medicine diagnostic support system that provides individualized diagnosis service to each patient by building an ontology on Oriental medicine focused on individual physical constitution and disease information.

  • Objectives : This paper recommends a global budget based payment system for reimbursing oriental medical services in the national health insurance. Methods : We analyzed previous research outcomes related to oriental medical services and payment system We reviewed the experiences of other countries' global budget system in terms of their strength and weakness. In addition, we developed a reimbursement method for oriental medical services based on global budget. Results : Our reviews focused on global budget system of Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Taiwan. The estimation of global budget in the national health insurance was described in two scenarios. First scenario was to allocate oriental medical services in scale after signing a contract for global budget. In this case, 4.16% of the national health insurance expenditure was allocated for the oriental medical services. Second scenario was to estimate the global budget in a historical context. As a result, the first scenario in total budget was higher than the second, and we proposed a retrospective adjustment method for the gap between the budget and the actual expenditure Conclusions : The payment system for oriental medical services is recommended to shift from fee-for-service to global budget.

  • Objective : The objective of this paper is to study the characteristics of the categorization of acupuncure points of the Lung Meridian(肺經) based on Hwangdineijingmingtang(黃帝內經明堂). Method : This paper examines several texts regarding the Lung Meridian. Result and Conclusion : Out of Yang Shangshan(楊上善)'s work, the theoretical aspects are presented in Hwangdineijingmingtang, whereas contents regarding acupuncture points are presented in Hwangdineijingmingtang. This is due to Yang's position as an imperial doctor(太醫侍御). In Hwangdineijingmingtang, Yang explains the characteristics of Metal(金) based on Hwangdineijingmingtang followed by an explanation of the acupuncture points of the Lung Meridian, which shows his emphasis on the relationship between the meridian as the main branch and the viscera. Along this medical logic, Yang must have included LU1(中府) into the Lung Meridian. This is Yang's unique point of view, distinguishing itself from other texts regarding the Lung Meridian. Apart from the means of explanation of the Lung Meridian by Yang, the verse 'made a volume for each 12 meridian' in the introduction of Hwangdineijingmingtang, discussion of the main treatable diseases of Hwangdineijingmingtang, contents on pathways of Lingshu Jingmai(靈樞 經脈), the start and end points of the meridians in Lingshu Maidu(靈樞 脈度) points to the assumption that each acupuncture point's belonging meridian known to us today was fixated by Yang.

  • YangDongChangHwaHuRok(兩東唱和後錄)is a book that organized the conversation between Joseon physician Ki-DuMun(奇斗文) and Japanese Acupuncture specialist Murakami Tanio(村上溪南) and others when they visited the quarters where the Choson Delegation(朝鮮通信使) were staying in, while the Choson Delegation party were visiting Japan in 1711. YangDongChangHwaHuRok(兩東唱和後錄) was discovered in the process of gathering medicine-related historical documents of the Choson Dynasty that is spread out all over the Japanese region, with the help from Japanese and Chinese scholars. This was part of the Co-Examination-Research-Process of korean medical documents that are located in the East Asia traditional medical region, which was promoted by the Korean Institute of Oriental Medicine in 2003. This paper has analyzed in-depth, with an inner-medical view, the academic exchange content of YangDongChangHwaHuRok(兩東唱和後錄) by following the order of the main text. With this examination, we were able discover new facts about the interest in Primary Symptom(是動病) and Secondary Symptom(所生病) of 17th century doctors, a new hypothesis on the diffusion of HeoYim(許任)'s ChimGuKyungHeomBang(鍼灸經驗方) in Japan, the existence of a new acupuncture tool called ChongChim(腫鍼), and the influence of the 18th comtemporay famous traditional medical books (it is called UiHakYipMun(醫學入門) and ShinEungKyung(神應經) on the 18th century East Asian medical circle. We were also able to ascertain the specific medical content that was diffused to the Japanese medical circle by the Korean medical circle.

  • In Korea, medical diagnostic equipments and biochemical examination can not be used in order for diagnosing sub-healthy state or ante-disease state in oriental medicine clinic. So morphic analogical method used in oriental medicine can be a good tool as a disease-predictable signs in order to enable preventive diagnosis and therapy. Therefore the four geometrical subjects; Essence, Pneuma, Spirit, Blood(四科;精氣紳血) and the four taxonomical species; Pisces, Quadruped, Aves, Carapaces(四類;魚走鳥甲) are chosen as morphic models in this paper. The differences of two classifying methods with four subjects and four species were as follows. The diagnostic category was meta-medical and synthetic against medical specific. The diagnostic object was body in contrast with face. They were able to be applicant in psychology and classification of characteristics against diagnostics and therapeutics directly in oriental medicine. The theoretical basis was basic diagrams of four unit-fluids of body and morphological analogy with four animal species respectively. And the therapeutic aims were systemic pathogenesis following five phase theory against congestion and deficiency of Essence, Pneuma, Spirit, Blood. The four subjects and four species are mixed each other practically in clinic. But it should be used limitedly because of the above reasons described and must divide the principal and secondary factors and follow the pathology of principal shape factor. In order to improve the diagnostic value of ante-disease state, the discriminable standards, measurement methods, limit of interrelating interpretation and the criteria of abnormal disproportion were needed to be defined more clearly in advance.
