Analysis of Articles Published in Korean Journal of Oriental Physiology and Pathology for Recent 3 Years (최근 3년간 발표된 동의생리병리학회지 논문의 방법론 및 통계처리기법에 관한 보고)

  • We analyzed the research type and statistical methods in Korean Journal of Oriental Physiology and Pathology for describing the trends of Oriental medicine research. The data for the analysis of trends in Oriental medicine research was taken from a total 808 articles published in Korean Journal of Oriental Physiology and Pathology from 2004 to 2006. We surveyed the number of authors, the institutes involved in each study, and used languages in each study. Also we seperated by epidemiological study design, the studies into categories and statistical methods into 13 categories. Results showed that descriptive statistics was used in 125(14.4%) papers. Also t-test, analysis of variance, multiple comparison, chi-square test, and non-parametric test were used in 338(38.9%), 147(16.9%), 81(9.3%), 27(3.1%), 23(2.6%) papers, respectively. And 62(7.1%) papers of the involved papers didn't use statistical methods. To improve the quality of Oriental medicine related articles, we have to use proper statistical methods with consultation of statistician or other experts before accepting a manuscript are needed.

Recent Trends in Oriantal Medical Treatment for Tinnitus (이명(耳鳴)의 한방치료에 대한 최신 연구 동향)

  • Objectives : This study is to research the trend of the oriantal medical treatment for tinnitus and to establish the hereafter direction for the study on oriantal medical treatment for tinnitus. Methods : We reviewed the domestic articles published last eleven years(2000- 2010). Results : We have searched 21 articles in 5 journals of korean oriental medical ophthalmology &dermatology, korean acupuncture & moxibustion, korean oriental medicine, oriental physiology & pathology, sasang constitutional medicine. 1. There were the most research done 2006. They have 5 articles. In other years there were 3 or less articles. 2. The pattern of study was as follow: the consideration of documents were 5, clinical trials were 6, case studies were 8 and the others were 2. the rate of case studies were increased. 3. After mid 2000s, there were more studies of new research method appearing. Conclusions : The oriental medical treatment already effective for tinnitus. But we need more studies about various kind of oriental medical treatment for tinnitus.

A literature study about utilization of oriental medical services (한방의료 이용에 대한 문헌적 고찰)

  • Objectives : This study aimed to analyze and summarize the utilization of oriental medical services in korea. Methods : From 3 Korean databases (National Assembly Library, Korea Education Research Information Sharing Service, and National Discovery for Science Leaders), published between 2001 and 2011, we were obtained 17 studies that involved the utilization of oriental medical services. Results : We found that women, elderly patients, and patients with low education levels and those with musculoskeletal and cerebrovascular diseases preferred to use oriental medical services. Other variables such as trust and kindness of staff and positive perceptions of the treatment effect were found to be significant determinants for utilizing oriental medical services. Conclusions : The utilization of oriental medical services would be related with gender, age, education levels and diseases. Also to confirm the reasons for patients to choose oriental medical services, further studies should be conducted using the highest methodological standards.

The effect of oriental obesity therapy on Morbid obese patient with Type 2 Diabetes : Two Cases Report (제 2형 당뇨병을 동반한 고도 비만환자에 대한 한방 비만치료 증례보고 2례)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical effect of oriental obesity therapy on morbid obese patient with Type 2 Diabetes. Methods Two cases of Type 2 Diabetes patient was treated with herbal medicine, electrolipolysis, dietetic therapy, and aerobic exercise during the treatment period. Results The diagnostic index (Weight, BMI, PBF, WHR, FPG, HgbA1C) was improved at the end of treatment. Conclusion The improvement of the patient with Type 2 Diabetes is identified through receiving oriental medical treatments, dietetic therapy, and aerobic exercises. Further research on medical treatments and long-term maintenance of weight loss for obese patients with Type 2 Diabetes should be needed in order to standardize the treatment methodology.

Oriental Medical Treatment and Sleep Restriction Therapy of the Simdamhugub type of chronic insomnia patients (한방치료와 수면제한요법으로 호전된 불면증 치험례)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the effect on 5 chronic insomnia patients according to the oriental medical treatment and sleep restriction therapy. These patients were treated with Sa-Am acupunture therapy(瞻正格), Ondam-tang, sleep restriction therapy and evaluated about comfort and improvement after therapy. The result of this research showed that all patients were satisfied with improvement of insomnia subjectively. I considered that chronic insomnia can be improved by oriental medical treatment with sleep restriction therapy and continuous research must be accumulated subsequently.

  • We plan to make the standardization of the pattern identifications for stroke and differentiate them by tongue diagnosis. We make a case report form which has questionnaires for tongue diagnosis in stroke patients. And we collected cases from the multi center network which consists of twelve university hospitals and one local hospital. The cases confirmed by diagnosis of medical specialists and residents are 321 cases. They are divided into Qi Defficiency 30.84%, Dampness& Phlegm 25.55%, Fire & Heat 22.43%, Eum Defficiency 18.69% and Blood Stasis 2.49%. We analyzed the markers which classified into the color of tongue body, the color of fur, the quality of fur, the dryness of tongue, the shape of tongue. To make a stroke pattern identification standard, we must try variable ways.

Review of cold hypersensitivity in study of Korean traditional medicine (국내논문검색서비스를 이용한 '냉증'에 관한 연구 동향 분석)

  • Purpose : This study is to investigate the trends of study of cold hypersensitivity in Korean traditional medicine and to direct for future research. Methods : We searched for papers which had used cold hypersensitivity in korean journals. Results : 25 papers were found. 10 papers were associated with characteristics of cold hypersensitivity. 8 papers were associated with case study. 5 papers were associated with diagnosis. 2 papers were associated with research for treatment effect. Conclusion : Studies have been conducted on cold hypersensitivity in various fields. But evidence is not enough, so more research will be needed.
