In oriental medicine, the skin of the face and the body is the mirror of the viscera and bowels. Skin aging is measured according to the elasticity and glossiness of the skin, which is perceived as a matter of fluid-humor within the realms of oriental medicine. Fluid-humor refers to normal body fluid that makes the skin moist and supple and the hair bright and glossy. If the body is lacking fluid-humor, the hair and skin will be dry and coarse. 'The improvement of fluid-humor (nutrition)' is facilitated based on the oriental physiological change theory for middle-aged women. A new study is therefore necessary to develop oriental herbal cosmetics for young women in their 20s. As yet, there has been no study on the effect of herbal cosmetics formulated for middle-aged women and used by young women in their 20s. This study aims to investigate the effect of 'the improvement of fluid-humor' for the skin of young women in their 20s within the theory of oriental medicine. This kind of study is essential for oriental skin care and the development of diverse oriental herbal cosmetics. To determine the effect of oriental herbal cosmetics on young women in their 20s based on the theory of oriental medicine, which says that a shortage of fluid-humor causes skin aging, this study has examined the skin conditions of young women in their 20s and how satisfied they are with oriental herbal cosmetics through an objective equipment-based measurement and subjective questionnaire survey.

Objectives : The Purpose of this study was to evidence the effect of Herbal Acupuncture therapy(Sangsik no.1) by comparing body fat and obesity degree of Group B(group of Herbal acupuncture therapy and general obesity treatment) with Group A(group of non-Herbal acupuncture therapy and general obesity treatment) in twenty four patients who have received OPD treatment at Sang Ji oriental medical hospital and chiefly diagnosed obesity from June 2000 to September 2001. Methods : We checked the change of Obesity degree with Inbody 3.0. Results and Conclusions : Two groups were no significance, but remarkably showed a significant decrease in Percent Body Fat. According to the above results, it is considered that Herbal Acupuncture therapy(Sangsik no.1) showed a significant decrease in Percent Body Fat, but Others were no significance.
Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activation and amyloid-${\beta}$ ($A{\beta}$) aggregation are major biological markers of Alzheimer's disease. In the present study, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of 50 kinds of herbal formulas on AChE activity and $A{\beta}$ aggregation. Among them, Hwanglyeonhaedok-tang, Cheonwangbosim-dan, Makmundong-tang, and Gamisoyo-san had a potent effects on the inhbition of AChE activity. Sosiho-tang, Samsoeum, Cheonsimyeunjaeum, and Bunsimgieum exerted to have the inhibitory activity on $A{\beta}$ aggregation. In addition, these 8 herbal formulas showed the 3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, indicating their antioxidant activities.
Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the basis for developing the herbal decoction that may help promote healthy blood vessels in accordance with the basic principles of Korean medicinal materials. Methods: In this study, we investigated the vascular relaxation effects of fifty herbal decoctions on vascular response in isolated thoracic aorta of phenylephrine-preconracted rats. Results: The results of identify the vascular relaxation effect of fifty herbal decoctions provided by Korea Institute of Korean Medicine, twenty-one herbal decoctions showed vascular relaxation effects. Among them, four herbal decoctions, Mahwang-tang (麻黃湯), Samchulgeonbi-tang (參朮健脾湯), Cheonwangbosim-dan (天王補心丹), and Socheonglyong-tang (小靑龍湯), with showed significantly concentration-dependent vasodilation was examined. Vascular relaxation level are $84.02{\pm}4.70$, $79.39{\pm}13.9$, $51.26{\pm}12.56$, and $54.73{\pm}15.8%$, respectively (P<0.05, 0.01, and 0.001). Conclusions: Thus these results provide a basic data for the treatment of the impairment of vascular function and blood pressure in traditional Oriental medicine.

The current study aims to analyze the acceptance of International Standard Terminology (IST) related to herbs and formulas used in Korea. It also intends to examine limitations of each term source by linking texts for herbal medicine research and formula research used in schools of oriental medicine with medicinal substance-formula classification names within the IST framework. This study examined 64 medicinal classification names of IST, including synonyms, 41 formula classification names, 65 classification names of "Herbal Medicine Study," 89 medicinal classification names of "Shin's Clinical Herbal Medicine Study," and lastly 83 formula classification names of "Formula Study." Data on their chief virtue, efficacy and characteristics as medicinal substances were extracted from their definitions, and such data were used to perform Chinese character-English mapping using the IST. The outcomes of the mapping were then analyzed in terms of both lexical matching and semantic matching. In terms of classification names for medicinal substances, "Herbal Medicine Study" had 60.0% lexical matching, whereas "Shin's Clinical Herbal Medicine Study" had 48.3% lexical matching. When semantic matching was also applied, "Herbal Medicine Study" showed a value of 87.7% and "Shin's Clinical Herbal Medicine Study" 74.2%. In terms of formula classification names, lexical matching was 28.9% of 83 subjects, and when semantic matching was also considered, the value was 30.1%. When the conceptual elements of this study were applied, some IST terms that are classified with other codes were found to be conceptually consistent, and some terms were not accepted due to different depths in the classification systems of each source.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the improvement after Sweet BV herbal acupuncture therapy of shoulder impingement syndrome with Subacromial bursitis. Objectives : Official Arisaematis Rhizoma is described only three species, Arisaema amurnse, Arisaema erubescens, and Arisaema heterophyllum, in national Pharmacopoeia. However, other Arisaema species, Arisaema ringens, Arisaema takesimense and Arisaema serratum, also have been distributed as an inauthentic Arisaematis Rhizoma in the herbal market. To develop a reliable molecular authentication method for Arisaematis Rhizoma in species level, we analyzed DNA barcode regions using six Arisaema species. Methods : Thirty-eight samples of six Arisaema plants species (A. amurense, A. amurense f. serratum, A. heterophyllum, A. takesimense, and A. serratum) were collected from different habitate and nucleotide sequences of DNA barcode regions (rDNA-ITS, matK, and rbcL gene) were analyzed after PCR amplification. The species-specific sequences and phylogenetic relations were estimated using entire sequences of three DNA barcodes based on the analysis of ClastalW and UPGMA, respectively. Results : The comparative analysis of DNA barcode sequences were revealed inter-species specific nucleotides to distinguish the medicinal plant of Arisaema Rhizoma in species levels excluding between A. amurense and its subspecies (A. amurense f. serratum) and A. takesimense and A. serratum, respectively. However, we obtained sequence differences enough to discriminate authentic and inauthentic Arisaematis Rhizoma. Therefore, we suggest that these SNP type molecular genetic markers were an reliable method avaliable to identify official herbal medicines. Conclusions : These marker nucleotides could be useful to identify the official herbal medicines by providing definitive information that can identify original medicinal plant and distinguish from inauthentic adulterants and substitutes.
