  • This study was conducted to observe the effects of dried tobacco leaf smoke on controlling aphids in a laboratory and a greenhouse. Insecticidal activity of tobacco smoke against Aulacorthum solani in an acrylic cage was higher when a burley cultivar, rather a flue-cured cultivar, was used. Mortality of A. solani, Aphis gossypii, and Myzus persicae was 63.9%, 94.4%, and 97.2%, respectively, after 50mg of tobacco smoke on their host plants in an acrylic cage. Mortality of M. persicae after tobacco smoke was used was higher in eggplant than in Chinese cabbage. When 100 g and 200 g of flue-cured tobacco were smoked in a $100m^2$ greenhouse for 2 h, the control values against A. solani were 28.9% and 95.4%, respectively; the control value after 14 h of smoking was more than twice the value after 2 h of smoking. The control value against A. gossypii was more than 80% after tobacco smoke was used in a greenhouse in an organic cucumber farm. Tobacco smoke can be an effective control against aphid pests in greenhouses if an appropriate amount of tobacco and smoking time on the basis of the greenhouse conditions are used.

  • This study was conducted to develop a technology for environmentally friendly control of sweet-potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, by controlling their behavior using a push-pull strategy in a tomato greenhouse. B. tabaci was attracted the most by yellow color, light source of 520 nm, whereas it avoided the complex light treatment of 450 + 660 nm. The two natural enemies of B. tabaci, Cyrtopeltis tenuis and Orius laevigatus, were attracted the most by 520 nm light source. B. tabaci was repelled by the volatile organic compounds ocimene and carvacrol and was the most attracted by methyl isonicotinate. When buckwheat was added into the tomato greenhouse, the density of C. tenuis was maintained at about 16 times higher than when untreated for 15 days. As a result of the combined treatment of push-pull strategy, the density per trap of B. tabaci was three times lower than when no treatment was applied, and the control of this pest increased with time and reached up to 68.7%.

  • Concerns on use of excess amount of chemical fertilizier and pesticide in current farming system turns both of the producer and consumer of agricultural products to an organic farming which use a less chemicals and more natural manure. Rice-duck farming system is one of the strategy to meet the purpose and this experiment was carried out to find the effect of the rice-duck farming system on the quality and yields of rice. 20day-old rice seedling were mechanically transplanted in sandy-loam paddy field and 21 day-old ducks were raised from 3 weeks after transplanting with population of 30 heads per 10a. The plots were consists of reduce fertilizer(70%) with and without duck-raising. The conventional fertilizer treatment without duck-raising was used as check. The results obtained are summarized as follows. The weeds population of test plots which were raised with duck for 3 consecutive years was less than that of test plots without duck-raising, though a speciffic population of Echinochola crusgallis were increased. The weed control effect was higer in duck-raising than in check at the maximum tillering stage but, not at later stages of rice plant. It was found that the small animals and insects inhibiting in the rice field were reduced by duck-treatment, however, there were also damages of grass leaf roller at booting stage in the plots of duck-raising. In rice-duck plot, dark green leaf color were found: 41.8 of SPAD value than 38.6 of SPAD in check plot. Higher root activity and surface soil oxidation were also observed in rice-duck plot than check plot. 3% of the increase in yield was observed by duck-treatment. However, the expected increase of the palatability wsa not observed. This may be due to the unfavorable weather conditions during the rice growing in this expriment.

  • This survey was carried out to collect the basic informations for the improvement of cultivation in job's tears (Coix lachryma-jobi L.) by investigating the general facts, farming practices, growth characteristics, grain yield, and chemical properties of soil in Yonchon-gun farms. The age of farmers were over 51 and the cultivated area was small. Most farmers were self-laboring and produced seeds on their land. Sowing method was usually drilling by hand, 64% of farms had the density of 2000-3500 plant per 10 a, amount of fertilizer application was diverse and the number of pest control was a few. The averages of plant height, number of main culm node, culm diameter, tiller number of plant, thousand grain weight, and grain yield were 184 cm, 10, 10 mm, 14, 108 g, and 341 kg/10a, respectively. The averages of pH, organic matter, $P_2O_5$, K, and EC of soil after harvest were 5.8, 1.1 g/kg, 385 mg/kg, 0.48 cmol+/kg, and 0.21 dS/m, respectively. Grain yield and hardness were negatively correlated -0.7442 at the level of P=0.01.

  • This study was conducted to test in vitro the antagonistic effect of composted liquid manure (CLM) against soil-borne turfgrass pathogenic fungi, Rhizoctonia solani AG-2-2 (IIIB) (brown patch), R. solani AG-2-2 (IV) (large patch), and Sclerotinia homoeocarpa (dollar spot) for environmentally friendly turfgrass management. CLMs were collected from 9 livestock excretion treatment facilities around the country including Gunwi (GW), Hapcheon (HC), Hoengseong (HS), Icheon (IC), Iksan (IS), Muan (MA), Nonsan (NS), and Yeoju (YJ). CLMs of IC, GW, and IS showed s ignificant (p < 0.05) mycelium growth inhibition that was 17.8%, 20.4%, and 48.0% against R. solani AG-2-2 (IIIB), R. solani AG-2-2 (IV), and S. homoeocarpa, respectively. A t otal of 110 bacterial isolates were obtained from the CLMs that showed antagonistic effects. Among them, 5, 4, and 10 microbe isolates showed promising antifungal activity against mycelium growth of R. solani AG-2-2 (IIIB), R. solani AG-2-2 (IV), and S. homoeocarpa, respectively. The bacterial isolates ICIIIB60, GWIV70, and ISSH20 effectively inhibited the mycelial growth of three soil-borne turfgrass pathogens. Selected bacterial isolates were identified as Alcaligenes sp., Bacillus licheniformis Ab2, and B. subtilis C7-3 through 16s rDNA gene sequence analysis. Among 5 fungicides, the most compatible fungicide with ICIIIB60, GWIV70, and ISSH20 was tebuconazol, toclofos-methyl and toclofos-methyl, respectively. These findings suggested that CLMs could be effectively used not only as organic liquid fertilizer sources but also as biological control agents for soil-borne turfgrass diseases such as brown patch, large patch, and dollar spot.

  • This study was conducted to investigate an effects on ago-chemical alternative materials such as the wood vinegar, a lactic acid bacteria serum, the fermented plant juice, the brown rice vinegar and a Chitosan used for amount and qualities of fruits and to examine the pest protection efficiency for their uses in the apple and pear orchard farms. An apple yields in the orchard cultivated with using the ago-chemical alternative materials without appling the fertilizer and pesticides were decreased at 56% relative to the conventional farming practice method. Also, it was indicated that there was difficult to produce the fruits with marketability because the small sizes of fruits were produced. For the quality of fruits, the brix of apple produced in the orchard cultivated with using the ago-chemical alternative materials was similar, but Vitamin C content was greater than that of the conventional farming practice method. As a results of treating with the wood vinegar, a lactic acid bacteria serum, the fermented plant juice, the brown rice vinegar and a Chitosan instead of applying pesticides, the fruit disease in the Chitosan treatment was a little decreased, but was great occurred in the other treatments compared with the conventional farming practice mehod. However, it observed that brix and Vitamin C content of apple produced in the Chitosan, brown rice vinegar, fermented plan juice and fish amino acid treatments and in the Chitosan, brown rice vinegar, charcoal power and peat moss treatments were greater than those of the conventional farming practice method, respectively. Over all, it considered that there was very difficult to manage the orchard depended on the ago-chemical alternative materials without appling the chemical fertilizer and pesticides in the apple orchard, but it might be proper to use the ago-chemical alternative materials as an auxiliary means to decrease the appling amount of chemical fertilizer and pesticides. Furthermore, the general effects on the ago-chemical alternative materials to the perennial fruits should be investigated with considering the changes of soil fertility, soil microbial status and natural enemy creatures after treating them for a long time.

  • BACKGROUND: Azadirachta indica Extract(AIE) containing azadirachtin as active ingredient have been used worldwide as environment-friendly organic material having pest control properties. However, the extracts prepared with different solvent and from different plant site is very diverse and have different toxicity. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the four week repeated oral dose toxicity test of aqueous AIE in Sprague-Dawley rats was carried out to investigate the toxic effect of liver, main toxicity target organ of AIE. The male and female rats were divided into 4 groups, respectively; control(0 g/Kg bw), low-dose group(0.5 g/Kg bw), middle-dose(1.0 g/Kg bw) and high-dose group(2.0 g/Kg bw). As a results, relative liver weight increased with dose-dependent of AIE(p<0.05). Serum LDH in all AIE-treated groups were significantly lower than the control in male rats(p<0.05). However, serum GOT and GPT were significantly increased in all male AIE-treated groups in male rats(p<0.05) and, in particular, increase of serum GPT in dose-dependent manner raise the possibility of liver damage. Even through serum GLU was increased significantly in high-dose group in male rats compared to control, there were no significant differences of urinary GLU among all groups(p<0.05). In addition, histopathological examination of the liver did not reveal any lesions in all AIE-treated groups. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, 4 weeks of the repeated oral administration of AIE 2.0 g/Kg to rats has resulted no toxic response in liver. Therefore, AIE was no indicated to have any toxic effect in the SD rats, when it was orally administrated below the dosage 2.0 g/Kg/day for 4weeks.
