  • Application of organic resources to agricultural land can increase crop yield by improving soil characteristics. The objective of this study was to evaluate effect of crop yield and soil physical properties including aggregate stability to application of organic resources in upland. The soybean was cultivated in a sandy loam field and a clay loam field located at Suwon and a sandy loam field located at Pyeongchang. The organic resources used in this study were rice straw compost (RSC), composted pig manure with sawdust (CPIG), composted poultry manure with sawdust (CPM), and cocopeat applied before sowing crop. Application rate of organic resources was determined based on carbon content and water content. The inorganic fertilizers were applied based on soil testing. In addition, the decomposition of RSC, CPIG, and cocopeat was characterized by isothermal incubation with sandy loam soil. The decomposition rate was highest for RSC followed by CPIG and cocopeat. Organic resource application increased yield of soybean, which effect was greater in clay loam than in sandy loam. In addition, increase in gas phase proportion by organic resource application was distinct in clay loam soil compared with sandy loam soil. In terms of aggregate stability, increasing effect was more obvious in sandy loam soils than in a clay loam soil. The highest yield was observed in RSC treatment plots for all the fields. Improvement of soybean yield and soil physical characteristics by cocopeat was not as much as that of the other organic resources. The results implied that RSC could be recommended for promoting aggregate stability and crop yield in upland cultivation.

  • Organic fertilization (OF) was an effective management strategy to improve crop yield and soil fertility. Determination of optimum application rate has been received great interest as a major research field. In this study, we evaluated optimum application level of three different organic fertilizers; mixed expeller compost (MEC), mixed organic fertilizer (MOF) and organic complex fertilizer (OCF), for garlic cultivation. Treatments consisted of MEC, MOF, OCF (50, 100, 150% of standard nitrogen input), inorganic fertilizer(NPK, N-P2O5-K2O : 250-78-128 kg ha-1) and no-fertilization (control). Overall, the yields of garlic under MEC, MOF and OCF 100% (5,337, 5,617 and 5,276 kg ha-1) were higher than under control (4,496 kg ha-1). The 100% of three OFs treatements showed the highest yield and bulb diameter, similar with NPK, while leaf length and bulb height were not significantly different among all treatments. The 150% of three OFs rather decreased yield. The highest nitrogen use efficiency (38.4 and 38.0%) was observed in MOF 100% and OCF100%, which was the most similar with that in NPK (38.8%). As OF application rate increased, pH was decreased, but soil NO3-N and NH4-N were increased. There was no significant difference in soil organic matter (OM), av. P2O5 and Ex. cation values. From these results, 100% application of OFs could be recommended as a suitable input level for garlic cultivation, regardless of organic fertilizer types. Further study might be required to evaluate long-term OF application effect on soil health and crop productivity.

  • This research was designed to know optimize soil sampling time, soil sampling depth and fertilizers according to season and soil condition in the golf course. One of the results was revealed that sampling point and depth have to be consistent for much fluctuation by sampling. Especially, Soil pH is decreased by soil depth remarkably. Top soil (0-5 cm depth) pH is higher than the sub soils (5-10 cm, 10-15 cm depth). It was confirmed that soil pH would increase when the state of soil is appropriate to H$^{+}$ ion concentration. Therefore, Soil pH modification is always not determined by lime content rather than soil conditions, i.e., Organic matter content, moisture content, and soil air content. More effective fertilizing time according to soil pH correction is the middle of october, and it's quantity is 100 g/$m^2$ silicate and 200 g/$m^2$ lime (Pel-Lime Mini) in this experiment. Recommended soil sampling method for acidity measurement is dividing by soil depth into each 5 cm respectively, rather than mixing 15 cm total soil.

  • We conducted this study to determine the recommended application rate of fertilizer for Houttuynia cordata Thunb cultivation. The effects of various application levels of N, $P_2O_5$, and $K_2O$ fertilizers on the growth of this plant were investigated and the associated changes in soil properties were evaluated in the field. Soil pH at harvest time of Houttuynia cordata Thunb did not differ from that before fertilization, whereas EC tended to decrease during cultivation. The soil organic matter (SOM) and available phosphorus increased after treatment, and the amount of applied fertilizer ($P_2O_5$) and available phosphorus were proportional. The nitrogen absorption amount increased in N 100% treatment, but decreased in N 150% treatment. The phosphorus absorption amount rose with the fertilizer treatment concentration until $P_2O_5$ 150% treatment. The amount of absorbed potassium decreased in treatments with $K_2O$ 150% and $K_2O$ 200%. The plant length was the longest in N 100%, $P_2O_5$ 150%, and $K_2O$ 200%. The stem diameter was estimated to be 3.46 - 3.67 mm in N 100 - 200% treatment, 3.55 - 3.67 mm in $P_2O_5$ 100 - 150%, and 3.79 mm in $K_2O$ 200%. The number of tillers did not differ amongst fertilization treatments. The fresh weight was summed to be 3.67 ton/10 a in N 100% treatment, 3.79 Mg/10 a in $P_2O_5$ 150%, and 3.83 Mg/10 a in $K_2O$ 150%. Thus, the relationship between the fertilizer amount and yields of the plant showed that the most economical quantity of fertilizers should be 10.2 N kg/10 a, 5.5 $P_2O_5$ kg/10 a, and 8.2 $K_2O$ kg/10 a for Houttuynia Cordata Thunb.

  • The effects of CaO, $CaO+MgSO_4$, and $CaO+MgSO_4$+compound fertilizers(NPK) on soil chemical properties of acidified forest soils were studied in Quercus spp. and Pinus rigida stands in Mt. Namsan and Mt. Surak in urban areas, and Kwangnung in a mountain area. The soil samples were collected in November 1995 after every year fertilization from November 1991 through April 1995. The fertilizations affected soil chemical properties. Soil pH increased after fertilizations compared with control. However, the effect was different between the stand types and the areas. Organic matter and total nitrogen content were not changed, while exchangable cations such as calcium and magnesium increased after fertilizations. However, these ration concentrations after fertilizer treatments were lower in P. rigida than in Quercus spp. stands. These rations also showed increased leaching characteristics more in the urban area than in the mountain area.

  • A pot experiment was carried out to find out the effects of the sludge application on corn and Chinese cabbage growth and changes in soil chemical properties with sludges collected from 4 plants at 0, 12.5, 25, 50, and $100Mg\;ha^{-1}$ levels and chemical fertilizer. With the corn experiment, the pot where sludge and chemical fertilizers were treated together, greater amount of sludge resulted in initial growth inhibition. In general, higher sludge treatment rates resulted in better growth in the end, whereas initial growth was inhibited due to high the electrical conductivity of saturated extracts(ECe) for the Chinese cabbage. However, the highest yield among sludge treatments was lower than the yield with chemical fertilizers. While the treatments resulted in chemical changes in soil showing differences of cation exchange capacity, organic matter contents, and nitrogen contents, hardly any changes were detected before and after crops were grown. Inorganic nutrients such as Na, K, Ca and Mg showed similar changes. The ECe in soil saturation extract decreased after crops were grown. The more sludge was treated, the greater was the decrease. The differences of ECe in the soil saturation extract with varying degrees of treatment were also reduced after crops were grown. Available phosphorus content increased during growth. Due to the low nitrogen content in sludge, when nitrogen becomes the determining factor for the amount of sludge treatment, phosphorus buildup resulted from continued application of sludge could be raised. Therefore, it is advisable to use phosphorus, not nitrogen content, in determining the amount of sludge treatment and chemical fertilizer as supplementary sources for nitrogen.

  • The nitrogen (N) balance in Korea during 1985-1997 was calculated according to the surface balance method of the PARCOM guidelines and compared with Japanese N balance. The some differences were founded in the coefficients used on calculating N balance in two nations. Of the important parameters, which can make a big difference in balance, N input by organic fertilizers was not included in Korea different with Japanese, due to absence of reliable statistics and then made lower the input. Nitrogen destruction rate from livestock manure was adjusted differently with 15% in Korea but 28% in Japan. There was some difference in the conversion factors of livestock number into manure N quantity in two nations, but the gap was ignoble scale except beef cattle. Our manure N production rate of beef cattle might be evaluated to be so lower than Japanese. Biological N fixation by pulses was very higher in Korea than in Japan but scarcely affect the increase of total N input, due to small cultivation area. In contrast, N fixation rate by free-living organisms in Korean and Japanese wet paddies showed the big difference with 7.6 and $37.0kg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, respectively, and therefore $29.4kg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ of nitrogen was estimated to be more inputted in Japan. Although there are many points to be more specified and improved, still, Korean N balance was very high with $250-257kg\;ha^{-1}$ in the mid of 1990s, which was the second highest level in OECD countries and furthermore increased continuously during the investigation. In contrast in Japan, which has similar fanning system with Korea, N balance was lower with $130-158kg\;ha^{-1}$ and has decreased continuously since 1993. This high N balance was mainly due to a high usage of chemical fertilizers in our intensive fanning system and the fast increment of livestock feeding. Therefore, the more active action to decrease chemical fertilizer utilization and reduce livestock feeding density is required in the government and farmer sides.

  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT) remote soil moisture control system including soil sensing, automatic water supply chain, and remote alarming system was established on reclaimed land and operated stably. The system was operated using river water around the reclaimed land without fertilizer. On applying this system to control soil moisture, the kenaf germination rate was improved up to two times. Kenaf biomass was 4,748 kg/10a and was higher than that of untreated soil moisture management. When the nutritious liquid fertilizer was used, kenaf yield reached 8,390 kg/10a, which was lower than 10,848 kg/10a of the non-reclaimed land treated with standard chemical fertilizers. As the soil moisture was managed stably through the ICT remote soil moisture control system, the quality of the kenaf crop was improved, resulting in a 7% increase in dry weight, and a 11.5% increase in plant hardness. The estimated kenaf yield was 5,039 kg/10a when 800 tonnes of water were supplied by the ICT remote soil moisture control system with the stream water around Saemangeum reclaimed land without chemical fertilizers and organic matter.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the growth and nutrient dynamics in response to fertilization of four tree species (LT: Liriodendron tulipifera L.; PY: Prunus yedoensis Matsumura; QA: Quercus acutissima Ca rruth; a nd PT: Pinus thunbergii Parl.) planted in a fire-disturbed urban forest in Bongdaesan (Mt.), Ulsan Metropolitan Area, South Korea. The trees were planted in 2009, and compound fertilizers (N6P4K1) were applied in April 2013 and March 2014. Tree growth, soil, and foliage nutrients were examined from March 2013 to October 2016. The regression coefficients for the increment of the diameter at breast height (DBH) significantly differed between the fertilized and unfertilized plots, suggesting the significant effects of fertilization. By contrast, fertilization did not affect the coefficients for height increments. Regarding soil nutrient contents, organic carbon and total nitrogen concentrations were lower in the fertilized plots than in the unfertilized plots, whereas available phosphorus, exchangeable calcium, and magnesium concentrations were higher in the fertilized plots than in the unfertilized plots. In foliage, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were higher in the fertilized plots than in the unfertilized plots, whereas potassium, calcium, and magnesium concentrations were not affected by fertilization. Nutrient concentration of foliage among the tree species were higher in LT and PY than in QA and PT. These results suggest that fertilizers may be used to enhance soil fertility and the growth and nutrient status of tree species planted in a fire-disturbed urban forest.
