  • When denitrification was connected with a single stream process by using biofilter and sulfur-limestone, it was found that such connection enabled highly efficient nitrification without special unit operation of microorganisms or injection of external carbon sources which is being shown in general biological treatment processes. It was observed that in the trickling filter bed, decomposition of organic substances and highly efficient nitrification by both the forced pressure feed trickling and the air fan were simultaneously done. In the denitrification tank where sulfur-limestone was mixed at a certain ratio, limestone was used by autotrophic microorganisms as a source of supply for alkalinity, and nitrate $NO_{3}^{-}$-N was denitrified into nitrogen gas. And in the sulfur-limestone autotrophic denitrification, $NO_{3}^{-}-N\;or\;NO_{2}^{-}-N$ was denitrified as a sulfur compound in reduction state was oxidized into a final output of $SO_{4}^{-2}$. The mean concentration of the discharge water was 8.6 mg/l for T-N and 0.8 mg/l for T-P, respectively, and their mean treatment efficiency was 79.2% and 80.8%, respectively. Implementing highly efficient denitrification without injection of an external organic carbon source or internal return, it is concluded that the proposed process is suitable for a sewerage in a small village with the merits of low power consumption and easy maintenance.

  • The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), first identified in China in December 2019, has widely spread worldwide and is an ongoing pandemic. It is expected that the ripple effect of COVID-19 on the global economy including the agricultural sector will increase substantially if not properly controlled shortly. This study examines the potential impact of COVID-19 on the Korean beef cattle sector and farm labor demand for Korean beef cattle using a dynamic partial equilibrium model. The agricultural production value and farm labor demand for Korean beef cattle in the scenario assuming pessimistic GDP growth rate (-1.2% in 2020) with no direct supply shocks fell by up to 4.00% and 0.67%, respectively, compared to the baseline which represents the future without COVID-19 outbreak. On the other hand, the agricultural production value and farm labor demand for Korean beef cattle in the scenario assuming both pessimistic GDP growth rate and supply shocks (-12.7% beef imports and + 2.4% feed cost in 2020) increased by up to 12.08% and 1.99%, respectively, compared to the baseline.

  • To recover of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) induced by painting process, we prepared separation system using hollow fiber membrane modules and evaluated the recovery performance of VOCs with different feed pressure and operating time. Concentration of volatile organic compound in permeate through the membrane increased with increasing operating time and pressure. Performance of the membrane for removing the VOCs when we applied 2-stage process showed better performance than that of single stage process.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the biogas productivity of agricultural by-products (ABPs) based on their proximate composition. Specifically, the effects of proximate composition were investigated, and a new mixing method was developed using various ABPs that are difficult to digest for biogas production. Methods: Experiments were conducted to compare the biogas productivity between a single ABP and a mixture of ABPs that had the same proximate composition as the single ABP. To match the proximate compositions of radish waste and corn distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS), mixed ABPs were made from various ABPs. Biogas potential tests (BMP tests) were performed at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 2.5 g VS/L and a feed to microorganism ratio (F/M) of 0.5 under the mesophilic condition. Results: The individual ABPs (radish and corn DDGS) and the mixed ABPs (cabbage waste with skim milk waste, bean-curd waste with skim milk waste, and some others) produced similar amounts of biogas. Conclusions: The new mixing method based on proximate composition can be applied to other ABPs and organic wastes from factories and municipal waste treatment plants to develop renewable energy and effective waste treatment methods.

  • Considerable attention has been focused in recent years upon the field of biosorption for the removal of metal ions from aqeous effluents. Compared to other technologies, the advan-tages of biosortption are the high purity of the treated waste water and the cheap raw material. Really, the first major challenge for the biosorption field is to select the most promising types of biomass. Abundant biomass types either generated as a waste by-product of large-scale industrial fermentations particularly fungi or certain metal-binding seaweeds have gained importance in re-cent years due to their natural occurrence, low cost and, of course good performance in metal biosorption. Industrial solutions commonly contain multimetal systems or several organic and in organic substances that form complexes with metals at relatively high stability forming a very complex environment. When several components are present, interference and competition phe-nomena for sorption sites occur and lead to a more complex mathematical formulation of the process. The most optimal configuration for continuous flow-biosorption seems to the packed-bed column which gets gradually from the feed to the solution exit end. Owing to the com-petitive ion exchange taking place in the column, one or more of the metals present even at trace levels may overshot the acceptable limit in the column effluent before the breakthrough point of the trargeted metal. Occurrence of 'overshoot's and impact on havey metal removal has not been analyzed enough. New trends in biosorption are discussed in this review.

  • Ecotoxicological effects of synthetic detergents such as laundry detergent and $Shampoo^{(R)}$ on cocoon productivity, hatchability, number of hatched individuals per cocoon and growth of next generation of Eisenia fetida population were evaluated. Synthetic detergents mixed with earthworm feed increased the cocoon productivity, number of hatched individuals per cocoon and growth of next generation of Eisenia fetida population, but there was no effect on hatchability. From those results, it could be concluded that synthetic detergents that might be present in the sewage sludge would not cause ecotoxicological effect on Eisenia fetida population.

  • Fermented total mixed ration (TMR) is a novel feed for ruminants in South Korea. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on the quality of TMR and in vitro ruminal fermentation. Strains of three LAB spp. (Lactobacillus plantarum, L. brevis, L. mucosae) were used in fermentation of TMR. Inoculations with the three LAB spp. lowered pH and increased concentrations of lactic acid, acetic acid, and total organic acid compared to non-LAB inoculated control (only addition of an equivalent amount of water) (p<0.05). Bacterial composition indicated that aerobic bacteria and LAB were higher. However, E. coli were lower in the fermented TMR than those in the control treatment (p<0.05). Among the treatments, L. brevis treatment had the highest concentration of total organic acid without fungus detection. Gas production, pH, and ammonia-nitrogen during ruminal in vitro incubation did not differ throughout incubation. However, ruminal total VFA concentration was higher (p<0.05) in the LAB spp. treatments than the control treatment at 48 hours. Overall, the use of L. brevis as an inoculant for fermentation of high moisture. TMR could inhibit fungi growth and promote lactic fermentation, and enhance digestion in the rumen.

  • The livestock farmers are producing under uncertainties such as Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The purpose of this study is to strengthen the management capabilities of Hanwoo farmers to prepare them for the uncertainties just mentioned. To this end, this study was conducted to find the optimal rearing period in order to reduce the feed cost, which accounts for the largest portion of the operation cost of Hanwoo. Using the universal lattice model, 41,139 of 289,000 Hanwoo slaughter data from 2010 to 2019 were used for the FMD period and 246,605 heads for the general period. The results show that the maximum cutoff price of Hanwoo steer is 6,394,457 won at the 4th week of 27 months of age in general period, where as 6,242,752 won at the 2nd week of 26 months of age in the FMD period. Therefore, it is judged that it will be helpful for Hanwoo farms to maximize their business profits by slaughtering one month and two weeks earlier in the FMD period than in the general period. In addition, Hanwoo farmers need to break away from the conventional rearing method and improve their management efficiency through a more flexible rearing method.

  • The separation of zirconium and hafnium using tributyl phosphate (TBP)-Dodecane extractants in nitric acid medium was performed. Zirconium oxychloride, used as extraction feed, was obtained from the synthesis of Kalimantan zircon sand concentrate smelted using NaOH. The extraction process was carried out by dissolving chloride-based metals in nitric acid media in the presence of sodium nitrate using TBP-Dodecane as an extractant. Some of the extraction parameters carried out in this study include variations in organic phase and aqueous phase (O/A), variations in contact time, and variations in nitric acid concentration. Extraction was carried out using a mechanical shaker according to the parameter conditions. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was used for elemental (Zr and Hf) composition analysis of the aqueous solution. The results showed that zirconium was separated from hafnium at optimum conditions with an organic/aqueous ratio of 1:5, contact time of 75 min, and an HNO3 concentration of 7 M. The resulting separation factor of zirconium and hafnium using TBP-Dodecane was 14.4887.
