This study sought to control the root-knot nematode (RKN) Meloidogyne incognita using benign organo-chemicals. Second-stage juveniles (J2) of RKN were exposed to dilutions (1.0%, 0.5%, 0.2%, and 0.1%) of acetic acid (AA), lactic acid (LA), and their mixtures (MX). The nematode bodies were disrupted severely and moderately by vacuolations in 0.5% of MX and single organic acids, respectively, suggesting toxicity of MX may be higher than AA and LA. The mortality of J2 was 100% at all concentrations of AA and MX and only at 1.0% and 0.5% of LA, which lowered slightly at 0.2% and greatly at 0.1% of LA. This suggests the nematicidal activity of MX may be mostly derived from AA together with supplementary LA toxicity. MX was applied to chili pepper plants inoculated with about 1,000 J2, for which root-knot gall formations and plant growths were examined 4 weeks after inoculation. The root gall formation was completely inhibited by 0.5% MX and standard and double concentrations of fosthiazate; and inhibited 92.9% and 57.1% by 0.2% and 0.1% MX, respectively. Shoot height, shoot weight, and root weight were not significantly ($P{\leq}0.05$) different among all treatments and the untreated and non-inoculated controls. All of these results suggest that the mixture of the organic acids may have a potential to be developed as an eco-friendly nematode control agent that needs to be supported by the more nematode control experiments in fields.

This study aimed to determine the effects if ambient temperature (Ta), relative humidity (RH), and temperature-humidity index (THI) on milk production parameters such as milk yield, fat, protein, milk urea nitrogen (MUN), and lactose. A total of fifty (50) mid-lactating Korean Holstein cows (144 - 150 days postpartum) were randomly assigned to two groups in equal numbers (n = 25) according to the type of diet received: conventional feed, a mixture of 56: 44 ratio of roughage and concentrate mix, and organic feed containing 100% organic roughage. Temperature, RH, and THI were recorded daily and averaged monthly. Conventional group showed higher dry matter intake throughout the experiment and thus, showed higher total milk yield and milk composition such as milk fat, protein, and lactose content than organic milk. Milk of the conventional group showed higher polyunsaturated fatty acid concentration. Highest milk yield was observed in September (21.7℃, 82.4%RH) in conventional group (27.69 kg·day-1) and in June (21.4℃, 72.9%RH) in organic group (14.31 kg·day-1). In conventional group, milk yield was positively correlated with Ta and THI, and milk protein was negatively correlated with Ta, RH, and THI. In organic feeding, only the MUN among milk composition parameters showed a significant correlation where it showed a negative correlation with Ta, RH, and THI. Conventional feeding showed significantly higher milk yield, fat, protein, and lactose than organic feeding throughout the experiment, although, organic feeding showed to be less likely affected by Ta, RH, and THI than the conventional feeding.
Natural organic matter (NOM) is a heterogeneous mixture of organic matter with various polarities and molecular weights in an aquatic environment. This study investigated the effects of separation conditions (resin volume, organic matter, etc.) and the repeated use of the resin for the fractionation of organic components in the DAX resin fractionation method. The distribution characteristics of the organic components ((hydrophilic [Hi], hydrophobic acid [HoA], and hydrophobic neutral [HoN]) under the derived fractionation conditions were also analyzed. Constant fractionation results (i.e. HoA/Hi ratio) were obtained in the column capacity factor (i.e. the packed resin volume) in the range of 50 to 100. The resin-packed column maintained constant separation efficiency for up to two repeated uses. The above conditions were applied to wastewater and stream water samples (before and after rainfall). The results showed that the concentration of organic matter in the wastewater effluent was 2-15 times lower with an increased ratio of hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity (i.e. Ho/Hi) compared to the influent depending on the industrial wastewater classification. Particularly, HoN was found to have a high content distribution, 10.2-50.4% of the total dissolved organic matter (DOM), in the effluents. For the stream water, the content of Hi or HoN increased significantly after rainfall, suggesting a correlation with the distribution characteristics of pollutants from the stream watershed. The results provide useful data to enhance the reliability of the DAX resin fractionation and its application to environmental samples.
As an attempt to develop new functional beverages for breakfast, sweet potato based beverages were prepared with hydrolyzed sweet potato, potato, and carrot products (sample : water = 1 : 1), and their chemical and sensory properties were evaluated. The content of reducing sugar and soluble solid of the sweet potato, potato, and carrot increased with enzyme treatment, while their viscosity decreased without significant change of color. The hunter color test showed that the beverages with 10% carrot content were high in redness leading to a decrease in their acceptability for sensory evaluation. The sensory score of the mixture containing 5% carrot was good, but beverage with 0% carrot reduced the sensory properties. The results showed that the final ratio of sweet potato to potato to carrot for the new functional beverage was 5 : 4.5 : 0.5. The pH of the beverage was adjusted to 5.0, 4.5, and 4.0 using an organic acid mixture. In the sensory test of the new functional beverage, the best sensory score(color, taste, smell, and texture) was the mixture of sweet potato : potato : carrot equaling 5 : 4.5 : 0.5 with a pH of 4.5.
Galactose, an isomer of glucose with an opposite hydroxyl group at the 4-carbon, is a major fermentable sugar in various promising feedstock for hydrogen production including red algal biomass. In this study, hydrogen production characteristics of galactose-glucose mixture were investigated using batch fermentation experiments with heat-treated digester sludge as inoclua. Galactose showed a hydogen yield compatible with glucose. However, more complicated metabolic steps for galactose utilization caused a slower hydrogen production rate. The existence of glucose aggravated the hydrogen production rate, which would result from the regulation of galactose-utilizing enzymes by glucose. Hydrogen produciton rate at galactose to glucose ratio of 8:2 or 6:4 was 67% of the production rate for galactose and 33% for glucose, which could need approximately 1.5 and 3 times longer hydraulic retention time than galacgtose only condition and glucose only condition, respectively, in continuous fermentation. Hydrogen production rate, Hydrogen yield, and organic acid production at galactose to glucose ratio of 8:2 or 6:4 were 0.14 mL H2/mL/hr, 0.78 mol $H_2$/mol sugar, and 11.89 g COD/L, respectively. Galactose-rich biomass could be usable for hydogen fermenation, however, the fermentation time should be allowed enough.
Research has found that the management of the host plant is essential to mistletoe cultivation. A Trunk injection test on the host plant that contained a mixture of indole-3-butryc acid (IBA) and liquid fertilizer was conducted with respect to the improvement of the one year survival rate of mistletoe. As a result, the trunk injection experiments showed the effect of the IBA and liquid fertilizer mixture in all treatments. This mixture was effective to increase the survival rate of mistletoe by 20% with the IBA at 100 mg/L and Hyponex at 100 mg/L. The examination proved that the host plant fertilizer effect was the most effective treatment for organic fertilizer with 60% added NPK (4-2-1). Its effects were higher compared to the control at the length and diameter of one-years-old branches in the host plant, even when the parasitic mistletoe improved its growth in length, diameter, and number of branches. Comparing the control and host plant fertilizer, the latter was the most effective way to process 20 kg per a treatment effect in the experimental site and to process at any time after the inoculation. This treatment is effective to improve the growth of mistletoe by watering the host plant three times per week. Therefore, the management of the host plant is an essential element in the successful cultivation of mistletoe, not only to supply fertilizer and plant hormones to the host plant in the initial inoculation time but also to provide organic fertilizer and irrigation for the host plant.

The chemical investigation of the methanolic crude extract of leaves of Diospyros iturensis gave us 15 known secondary metabolites identified as mixture of α-amyrenone (1) and β-amyrenone (2), β-amyrin (3), mixture of β-sitosterol (4) and stigmasterol (5), betulin (6), uvaol (7), betulinic acid (8), ursolic acid (9), corosolic acid (10), actinidic acid (11),11-O-p-hydroxybenzoylbergenin (12), bergenin (13) and mixture of stigmasterol glucoside (14) and β-sitosterol glucoside (15) respectively. The structures of secondary metabolites were elucidated with the help of NMR and mass spectral data and by comparison of their spectral data with literature. Among the fifteen isolated compounds, four compounds were identified for the first time in Diospyros genus. These included uvaol (7), corosolic acid (10), actinidic acid (11) and 11-O-p-hydroxybenzoylbergenin (12). Crude methanolic extract of leaves and four isolated compounds including betulin (6), betulinic acid (8), 11-O-p-hydroxybenzoylbergenin (12) and bergenin (13) were evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against two cancer cell lines CAL-27 and NCI-H460 by the MTT assay, antioxidant potential and inhibitory activity against the lipoxygenase and urease enzymes, respectively. The results indicated that the methanolic crude extract of leaves exhibited moderate antioxidant activity and was inactive against the two cancer cell lines. Betulin (6), 11-O-p-hydroxybenzoylbergenin (12) and bergenin (13) exhibited moderate antioxidant and lipoxygenase inhibition with IC50 = 65.8, 85.6, 82.5 μM and IC50 = 58.5, 95.2, 76.2 μM, respectively. Furthermore, 11-O-p-hydroxybenzoylbergenin (12) and bergenin (13) exhibited moderate urease inhibition activity with IC50 values of 45.6 μM and 49.8 μM, respectively.
Decomposition of trichloroethlyene(TCE) in electron beam irradiation was examined on order to obtain information on the treatment of VOC in air. Air containing vaporized TCE has been studied in a flow reactor with different reaction environments, at various initial TCE concentration and in the presence and absence of water vapor. Maximum decomposition was observed in oxygen reaction environment and the degree of decomposition was about 99% at 20kGy for 2,000ppm initial TCE. The concentration of TCE exponentially decreased with dose in air and pure oxygen. The effect of water vapor on TCE decomposition efficiency was examined. The decomposition rate of TCE in the presence of water vapor (5,600 ppm) was approximately 10% higher than that in the absence of water vapor. Dichloroacetic acid, dichloroacethyl chloride and dichloroethyl ester acid were identified as primary products of this reaction adn were decomposed and oxidized to yield CO and $CO_2$. Perchloroethylene, hexachloroethane, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride were also observed as highly chlorinat-ed by products.
In this work electrochemical oxidation of Ascorbic acid (AA) on the surface of Cobalt nano particle modified carbon paste electrode (CoNPsMCPE) was studied in alkaline media. CoNPs were green synthesized using Piper longum and a mixture of 5% (w/w) of it were made with carbon paste. CoNPs showed good electrocatalytic activity in alkaline media. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) were used to study the electrochemical performance of CoNPsMCPE. The number of monolayers on the surface of electrode was calculated as 1.08×109 mol cm−2 that is equal to that of metal Cobalt electrode. Diffusion coefficient of AA was determined using CA analysis which was equal to 1.5×10−6cm2 s−1.

A dual capillary column system is described for the simultaneous measurement of retention index (RI) and area ratio (AR) values of each peak on two capillary columns of different polarity, DB-5 & DB-1701. Both capillary columns were connected to a common splitless injector via a deactivated fused-silica capillary tubing of 1 m length and a 'Y' splitter, the dead volume effect of which was found to be negligible. RI and AR were measured with high reproducibility(${\leq}$0.05% RSD) and with high accuracy (<10% RE), respectively. When applied to the test samples of the organic acid mixture, each acid was positively identified by the combined computer RI library search-AR comparison.
