This paper presents preliminary laboratory investigations on the electrokinetic (EK) remediation coupled with permeable reactive barrier (PRB) system. Atomizing slag was adopted as a PRB reactive material for remediation of groundwater contaminated with inorganic and/or organic substances. A series of laboratory experiments were performed with variable conditions such as (i) type of contaminant, (ii) applied electric field strength, (iii) processing time, and (iv) the application of PRB system. From the preliminary investigations, the coupled technology of EK with PRB system would be effective to remediate contaminated grounds without the extraction of pollutants from subsurface due to the reactions between the reactive materials and contaminants.

Kindergarten children are engaged in the age of physical immaturity as well as the rapid growth. The indoor air contaminants that are proved to affect even the full grown adults are obvious to have no little influence to immature small children in a growth period. In May 2004, for the multi purpose facilities and newly constructed apartments, the Ministry of Environment announced "Indoor Air Quality Control Law for the Multi Purpose Facility," which made the interests to be focused in the urgent understanding of current condition and preparation of measures about the indoor air pollution. In Dec 2005, the law was revised to obligatorily notify the amount of Formaldehyde and Volatile Organic Compounds in the case of newly constructed apartments with more than 100 houses. However, since the kindergarten takes none of the classifications, even the current condition is not grasped although it is directly connected to the health of growing children. Therefore, the study aims to analyze indoor air pollution of one selected kindergarten in Incheon city.
Fouling of heat exchangers is generated by water-borne deposits, commonly known as foulants including particulate matter from the air, migrated corrosion produces; silt, clays, and sand suspended in water; organic contaminants; and boron based deposits in plants. This fouling is known to interfere with normal flow characteristics and reduce thermal efficiencies of heat exchangers. This paper focuses on fouling analyses for six heat exchangers of two primary systems in two nuclear power plants; the regenerative heat exchangers of the chemical and volume control system and the component cooling water heat exchangers of the component cooling water system. To analyze the fouling for heat exchangers, fouling factor was introduced based on the ASME O&M codes and TEMA standards. Based on the results of the fouling analyses, the present thermal performances and fouling levels for the six heat exchangers were predicted.

Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) is a technique in which secondary- or tertiary-treated wastewater is infiltrated through unsaturated soil and stored in the saturated zone. In SAT, contaminants are removed by physical and biochemical reactions taking place in soils. In this study, a numerical model was developed to predict changes in water quality during SAT operations. The contaminant species considered in the model were ammonium, nitrate, dissolved organic carbon, and dissolved oxygen. The model was calibrated against experimental data obtained from one dimensional soil column tests conducted for 84 days. The calibrated model will be used to find out optimum conditions for the pilot- and regional-scale SAT operations to be scheduled for the next phase of this project.

The objective of this study was to investigate reductive dechlorination of aromatic hydrocarbons using zero valent metals (ZVMs) and catalysts as reactive materials for permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). A group of small aromatic hydrocarbons such as monochlorophenols, phenol, benzene were readily reduced with palladium catalyst and zero valent iron. Poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were also tested with the catalysts and zero valent metal combinations. The aromatic rings were reduced and partly reduced PAHs were found as the daughter compounds. Current preliminary study implicate that ZVMs and modified catalysts can be successfully applied for PRBs which currently applicable for halogenated organic compounds and some inorganic contaminants including chromium(Ⅵ) and nitrate.

Bioremediation of trace metals in groundwater may require the manipulation of redox conditions via the injection of a carbon source. To simulate the numerous biogeochemical processes that will occur during the bioremediation of trace-metal-contaminated aquifers, a reactive transport model has been developed. The model consists of a set of coupled mass balance equations, accounting for advection, hydrodynamic dispersion, and a kinetic formulation of the biological or chemical transformations affecting an organic substrate, electron acceptors, corresponding reduced species, and trace metal contaminants of interest, uranium in this study. The redox conditions of the domain are characterized by estimating the pE, based on the concentrations of the dominant terminal electron acceptor and its corresponding reduced specie. This pE and the concentrations of relevant species we then used by a modified version of MINTEQA2, which calculates the speciation/sorption and precipitation/dissolution of the species of interest under equilibrium conditions. Kinetics of precipitation/dissolution processes are described as being proportional to the difference between the actual and calculated equilibrium concentration.
This research was conducted to figure out the feasibility of several sorption materials to treat various pollutants in road runoff. In advance of the major feasibility test with various sorption materials, the separation process with $1.2{\mu}m$ filter was conducted and showed that slight portion of pollutants was removed(Orgamic pollutant - 20%, Nutrient salt - 50%, Heavy metals - 0~30%). To remove dissolved pollutants in runoff, various materials were tested through an isotherm sorption experiment. As a result, GAC showed most effective material among them to lessen most contaminants such as organic compounds and nutrients. On the other hand, ion-exchange resin and Zeolite showed limited usefulness on the some heavy metals. Freundlich model was most suitable for the current experiment data, and the amount of adsorbent (GAC) could calculated based on this model.

The trend of using more hardwood and recycled fibers, and closing more tightly of the paper mill white water system has resulted in build-up of fines as well as organic and inorganic contaminants in the white water. This changes in papermaking wet end requires developing chemical additive system that provides good fiber retention and drainage in closed white water system. In this study the effect of charge densities and chemical characteristics of microparticle systems consisted of cationic guar gums and anionic colloidal silica sols on drainage and retention have been examined. Results showed that higher charge density of cationic guar gum and anionic colloidal silica sol gave better retention and drainage. Particularly highly structured silica gave greater retention efficiency.

In recent days, IAQ(Indoor Air Quality) is regarded as one of the most important environmental factors as well as thermal and acoustic comfort. Various architectural materials are applied and air-tightness of the building is more strengthening to save energy consumption. This is why the air quality of the newly built houses became worse. In this study, contaminants(CO, CO$_2$, Radon, TVOCs, HCHO) density was measured in a newly built house and evaluation was carried out by ASHRAE and EPA Standards. As a result, CO, CO$_2$, TSP and Radon density of the newly built house was in a range of ASHRAE and EPA Standards, but it turned out TVOCs and HCHO density exceeds almost 3${\sim}$5 times in comparison with that of ASHRAE and EPA Standards.

The influence of adsorption on cadmium toxicity to soil microorganisms in smectite-rich soils and sediments was quantified as a function of solution and sorbent characteristics. Adsorption and surface complexation experiments were conducted to infer Cd sorption mechanisms to a reference smectite and three fractions of a Veritsol soil, and to elucidate the effects of the surface complexation on Cd bioavailability and toxicity in soils and sediments. Cadmium adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir adsorption model, with adsorptive capacities of the different samples dependent on their characteristics. Equilibrium geochemical modeling (MINTEQA2) was used to predict the speciation of Cd in the soil suspensions using Langmuir and Triple Layer surface complexation models. The influence of adsorption and surface complexation on cadmium toxicity to soil microorganisms was assessed indirectly through the relative change in microbial hydrolysis of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) as a function of total Cd concentration and sorbent characteristics. Adsorption decreased the toxicity of Cd to soil microorganisms. Inner-sphere complexation is more effective than outer-sphere complexation in reducing the bioavailability and toxicity of heavy metals in soils and sediments.
