Assembly of Six-Membered Vanadium Borophosphate Cluster Anions: Synthesis and Structures of (NH4)2(C2H10N2)6[BaH2O)5]2[V2P2BO12]6.8H2O and (NH4)8(C3H12N2)4[Ba(H2O)7][V2P2BO12]6.17H2O

  • Two new barium vanadium borophosphate compounds, $(NH_4)_2(C_2H_{10}N_2)_6[Ba(H_2O)_5]_2[V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6{\cdot}8H_2O$, Ba- VBPO1 and $(NH_4)_8(C_3H_{12}N_2)_4[Ba(H_2O)_7][V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6{\cdot}17H_2O$, Ba-VBPO2 have been synthesized by interdiffusion methods in the presence of diprotonated ethylenediamine and 1,3-diaminopropane. Compound Ba-VBPO1 has an infinite chain anion (${[BaH_2O)_5]_2[V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6}$$^{14-}$, whereas Ba-VBPO2 has a discrete cluster anion {[$Ba(H_2O)_7][V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6$}$^{16-}$. A Study on the Operational Variables of the UV-TiO$_2$ Based Photocatalytic Air Cleaning System (UV-TiO$_2$ 광촉매 기반의 공기 정화 시스템의 운전조건에 대한 연구)

  • A study on the operational variables of the UV-TiO$_2$ based photocatalytic air cleaning system was tried. In this study, to examine effects as various air cleaning system conditions, a duct-type reactor was made, and TiO$_2$ was immobilized on a stainless mesh. Benzene was chosen as a target compound. Removal experiments for benzene were done under different initial benzene concentration, air velocity, TiO$_2$ loading, area coated TiO$_2$ as the same TiO$_2$ loading, and UV light intensity conditions. During the experiments, relative humidity was 55%, and reactor temperature was 45$^{\circ}C$. As a result, the photocatalytic degradation of benzene decreased as the inlet concentration increased. But the photocatalytic degradation increased as the concentration boundary layer thickness, amount of TiO$_2$, area coated TiO$_2$ as the same amount of TiO$_2$, and UV light intensity increased. Based on results of current study, they can be applied to the design of air cleaning system over low level VOCs in the indoor air.

An Analysis of First Flush Phenomenon of Non-point Source Pollution during Rainfall-Runoff Events from Impervious Area (불투수성 지역의 강우유출수에 대한 비점오염물질의 초기유출현상 분석)

  • In this study, trend analysis was performed by various runoff analysis method of Non-point Pollution Source(NPS) at the impervious area. The characteristics of rainfall at impervious area appeared to be influenced by rainfall strength and it appeared that first flush phenomenon occurs often if rainfall strength acts largely. It is judged that the measure is required to be prepared against that now that concentration difference of non-point pollution source appeared to be big by precedent number of days of no rainfall. As the result of calculating Decrease Rate (DR) by first flush of non-point pollution source, it is judged that it is important to prepare the measure against the pollutants about initial rain and it is necessary to calculate the capacity of non-point pollution source processing facilities regarding that now that the non-point pollution source integrated at impervious area showed the characteristics that are flowed out in high concentration by initial rain in case of non-rainfall considering the characteristics of non-point pollution source at impervious area. When taking 50% of non-point pollution source as the standard for decrease rate that was evaluated previously, it appeared as 15~60 min in case of TSS and it appeared as 30~90 min in case of organic compound, but the characteristic whose decrease rate is below 50% also appeared even till rainfall-runoff ends. Based on that, it is judged that it could be used as the reference when designing the structural BMPs facilities later.

  • Nitrous oxide is a typical greenhouse gas which is produced from various organic or fossil fuel combustion processes as well as chemicals producing plants. $N_2O$ has a global worming potential of 310 times that of $CO_2$ on per molecule basis, and also acts as an ozone depleting material in the stratosphere. However, its removal is not easy for its chemical stability characteristics. Most SCR processes with several effective reducing agents generally require the operation temperature higher than $450^{\circ}C$, and the catalytic conversion becomes decreased significantly when NOx is present in the stream. Present experiments have been performed to obtain basic design data of actual application concerning the effects of $SO_2$ and $NH_3$ on the interim and long term activities of $N_2O$ reduction with CO over the mixed metal oxide (MMO) catalyst derived from a hydrotalcite-like compound precursor. The MMO catalysts used in the experiments, have shown prominent activities displaying full conversions of $N_2O$ near $200^{\circ}C$ when CO is introduced. The presence of $SO_2$ is considered to show no critical behavior as can be met in the $NH_3$ SCR DeNOx systems and the effect of $NH_3$ is considered to play as mere an impurity to share the active sites of the catalysts.

  • The VOC (volatile organic compound) analyzer is devised to measure the four main aromatic hydrocarbon gases: toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and styfene. It is not affected by ambient temperature and humidity. In addition, standby and measuring time of VOC Analyzer is a short as below 30 min and 8 min, respectively. Since the semiconductor gas sensor is supersensitive to gas components, it is not necessary to use a conventional gas concentrator or other complicated equipment. In this study, VOC emission behavior from 4 types paints (lacquer, urethane vanish, water-base paint, enamel paint) for wood-based panel was investigated using VOC Analyzer. After a specimen was spreaded on aluminum foil ($6.32{\times}6.32cm$) in $3{\ell}$ polyester bag, after 24 hours we could measure maximum VOC emission level that is a stabilized VOC value. Xylene of VOCs was high emitted from lacquer, urethane vanish and water-based paint, and TVOC (Toluene + Ethylbenzene + Xylene + Styrene) of lacquer was the highest emission concentration than another.

  • GC/MS has been utilized for many applications due to great resolution and reproducibility, which made it possible to build up the database of mass spectrum, while HS-SPME has the advantage of solventfree extraction of volatile compounds. The combination of these two methods, HS-SPME GC/MS, enabled many scientific applications with various possibilities. In this study, the analysis of trail pheromone excreted from live Camponotus japonicus with the feature of solvent-free extraction was carried out and the optimization for this analysis was performed. The major compounds detected were n-decane, n-undecane, and n-tridecane. Optimization for the best detection of these hydrocarbons was processed in the point of SPME parameter (selection of fiber, extraction temperature, extraction time, etc.). The advantage of the analysis of live sample is to analyze phenomenon right after it is excreted by ants. But the experimental process has restriction of extraction temperature and time because of the analysis of live ants. Establishing the process of HS-SPME GC/MS applied to live samples shown in this study can be a breakthrough for the ecofriendly and ethical research of live things.

Increasing Effect on Storage Stability of Rosemary Extracts used for Various Solvent System on Seasoning Oils (향미유 제품에 대한 추출 용매별 로즈마리 추출물의 저장 안정성 향상 효과)

  • As for red pepper seasoning oil (RPSO), seasoning oil (SO) and pine needle oil (PNO), various organic solvent extracts from rosemary powder and tocopherol are treated as control group. At this time, amounts that are treated were all 1,000 ppm. It was observed by AV (acid value), POV (peroxide value) and carbonyl compounds content of the stored samples during 3 months at 60${\pm}$2$^{\circ}C$ incubation. Tocopherol was shown to be pro-oxidant than the antioxidant in all seasoning oil samples. Icreasing effect of storage stability of chloroform/MeOH extract was the most superior one. Final result of icreasing effect of storage stability from the determinated data was as follows. The storage stability of solvent system by AV and POV analysis was in the increasing order of chloroform/MeOH extract> ethyl alcohol extract>hot water extract>ethyl acetate extract>acetone extract>none treating group> tocopherol treating group, POV was chloroform/MeOH extract>ethyl alcohol extract ${\geq}$ ethyl acetate extract> acetone extract ${\geq}$ hot water extract>none treating group>tocopherol treating group and by carbonyl compound content analysis was in the increasing order of chloroform/MeOH extract>ethyl acetate extract>ethyl alcohol extract>hot water extract>acetone extract>none treating group>tocopherol treating group.

Characteristics of Fermentation and Aging by Different Adding of Brewing Water in Korean Traditional Cheongju (가수량을 달리한 전통 청주의 발효 및 숙성 특성 연구)

  • This present work was aimed to analyse characteristics of fermentation and aging of Korean traditional cheongju prepared by adding of different brewing water. The three different mashes were used for fermentation and maturation. The cheongju(A) was prepared without adding of brewing water in two stage mashing. Cheongju(B) and cheongju(C) were made with adding of 1 liter and 2 liter brewing water in two stage mashing respectively whereas the cheongju(B) and cheongju(C) showed higher fermentation ability than that of cheongju(A) regarding to pH, ethanol, specific gravity and sugar concentration(brix). In terms of volatile compounds content after six months aging, cheongju(A and B) prepared by adding brewing water showed the higher content of ethyl acetate than that of cheong(C) and the concentrations were maintained during the aging period. In addition, the content of fusel oil(n-propanol, i-butanol, n-butanol, i-bmyl alcohol, n-bmyl alcohol)indicated similar pattern as ethyl acetate. The organic acid of cheongju B(4873.46 mg/l) and C(4963.12 mg/l) also indicated the higher content than that of cheongju A(4661.47 mg/l). In conclusion, cheongju B and C prepared by adding brewing water in two stage mashing showed better quality and taste than that of cheongju A.

  • When $[U-^{14}C]$ 3,3', 4,4'-tetrachloroazobenzene$([U-^{14}C]\;TCAB)$ was added to the $MM_2$ medium as a sole carbon source for the isolated microorganisms and incubated, some radioactive metabolites were detected by autoradiography. No $^{14}CO_2$ was evolved from $[U-^{14}C]\;TCAB$ which was added as a sole carbon source to an organic matter-free soil inoculated by the isolates, wetted with the $MM_2$ salt medium, and incubated at $30^{\circ}C$. One of the metabolites in pure culture of Achromobacter group VD, which was isolated and identified, was tentatively identified as a compound of m/z 250 by means of GC/MS. The possible pathways for its formation are thought to include dechlorination from the TCAB structure, hydroxylation, ortho fission of the two benzene rings, and reduction of the resulting carboxyl group.

  • A dynamic biofilter model was suggested to integrate the effect of biofilter-medium adsorption capacity on the removal efficiency of volatile organic compound (VOC) contained in waste air. In particular, the suggested biofilter model is composed of four components such as biofilm, gas phase, sorption volume and adsorption phase and is capable of predicting the unsteady behavior of biofilter-operation. The process-lumping model previously suggested was limited in the application for the treatment of waste air since it was derived under the assumption that the adsorbed amount of VOC equilibrated with biofilter-media would be proportional to the concentration of dissolved VOC in the sorption volume of biofilter-media. Therefore a Freundlich adsorption isotherm was integrated into a robust biofilter process-lumping model applicable to a wide range of VOC concentration. The values of model parameters related to biofilter-medium adsorption were obtained from the dynamic adsorption column experiments in the preceding article and literature survey. Furthermore a separate biofilter experiment was conducted to treat waste air containing ethanol and the experimental result was compared with the model predictions with various values of Thiele modulus (${\phi}$). The obtained value of Thiele modulus (${\phi}$) was close to 0.03.
