  • Intrinsic random function of order k(IRF-k) was used to estimate groundwater levels of nonstationaav random functions. The accuracy of IRF-k was compared to that of ordraarv krigrng assuming that the data of groundwater levels compose a stafionarv random function. Cross validation and statistical errors show that IRF-k is superior to orcinarv '(riging for the estimation of water levels. IRF-k and ordinary kriging made different contour and 3-D surface maps. The maps of IRF-k are more accurate than those of ordinary kriging.

  • In this study, vertical electrical sounding (VES) data and ordinary kriging are used to identify the alluvial depth of each area that Korea Resources Corporation (KORES) conducted groundwater survey at Miryang area in Gyeongsangnam-do and Pocheon area in Gyeonggi-do from 2003 to 2004. To verify the applicability of VES data to ordianry kriging, regression analysis of VES data versus drillhole data is conducted. Comparing the alluvial depth distributions using ordinary kriging with existing drillhole data, the result shows that the depth distributions are reasonably depicted along with the topography and the basin. So, the ordinary kriging of VES data is useful to identify the alluvial depth distributions.

  • Distribution pattern of seawater intrusion was analyzed from the spatial distribution map of chloride using the geostatistics and CIS analyses. The chloride distribution map made by kriging(ordinary kriging and co-kriging) after exploratory spatial data analysis. Kriging provides an advanced methodology which facilitates quantification of spatial features and enables spatial interpolation. TDS, Na$^{+}$, Br$^{[-10]}$ were selected as second parameters of co-kriging which is higher value of correlation coefficients between chloride and others groundwater properties. Chloride concentration is highest in yeminchon and coastal area. And result in co-kriging was accurate than ordinary kriging.

  • Kriging techniques have been used to estimate the spatial distribution of soil layers and soil properties in the geotechnical engineering area. Since the selected kriging technique may provide different values of estimation, the selection of method is important in the geotechnical estimation. In this paper, the spatial distribution of the thickness of consolidation layer of Songdo International City is estimated using simple, ordinary, and universal kriging techniques, and the reliability of estimated results is analyzed. It is shown that the consolidation layer thickness estimated by the simple kriging technique is larger than those by other kriging techniques when the location of estimation is far from the locations where the measured data exist. In this case, the reliability of the simple kriging technique is observed to be lower than those of other techniques. Universal kriging gives a negative value for thickness of consolidation layer in some locations away from the data. It is concluded that the ordinary kriging is the most optimized estimation technique because the reliability of ordinary kriging technique is higher than those of other ones and the consolidation layer thickness estimated by the ordinary kriging locates within the reasonable range.

  • The heterogeneity of hydraulic conductivity of Metropolitan Waste Landfill is analized by using geostatistical methods and the contaminant transport analysis is performed by using heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity. The hydraulic conductivity data are obtained from laboratory pressurized permeability tests and the insitu, Slug test. Geostatistical methods used in this analysis are Ordinary Kriging and conditional simulation. It is concluded that the heterogeneities of hydraulic conductivity obtained from conditional simulation are greater than those from Ordinary Kriging analysis. The movement of the contaminant on the hydraulic conductivity with greater heterogeneity obtained from conditional simulation is faster than that observed in Ordinary Kriging analysis.

  • In recent study on design of experiments, the complicate metamodeling has been studied because defining exact model using computer simulation is expensive and time consuming. Thus, some designers often use approximate models, which express the relation between some inputs and outputs. In this paper, we review and compare the complicate metamodels, which are expressed by the interaction of various data through trying many physical experiments and running a computer simulation. The prediction model in this paper employs interpolation schemes known as ordinary kriging developed in the fields of spatial statistics and kriging in Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments (DACE) model. We will focus on describing the definitions, the prediction functions and the algorithms of two kriging methods, and assess the error measures of those by using some validation methods.

  • The data observed at different positions are called the estimate of interested variable at new observation point on the Kriging utilize the space estimate technique, in which case there is correlation spatially. In this paper we provide the estimate for Variogram and Kriging methods as a field of kriging theory and dealt with actually measured data. And at the same time we forecast the amount of ozone that was not measured at this point by Kriging method and compared Ordinary Kriging method with Inverse Distance Kriging method.

  • This paper presents the applications of Kriging spatial interpolation methods for meteorologic variables, including temperature and relative humidity, in regions of Vietnam. Three types of interpolation methods are used, which are as follows: Ordinary Kriging, Universal Kriging, and Universal Kriging plus Digital Elevation model correction. The input meteorologic data was collected from 98 ground weather stations throughout Vietnam and the outputs were interpolated temperature and relative humidity gridded fields, along with their error maps. The experimental results showed that Universal Kriging plus the digital elevation model correction method outperformed the two other methods when applied to temperature. The interpolation effectiveness of Ordinary Kriging and Universal Kriging were almost the same when applied to both temperature and relative humidity.

  • The objective of this paper is to compare spatial prediction capabilities of univariate kriging algorithms for generating GIS-based thematic maps from ground survey data with asymmetric distributions. Four univariate kriging algorithms including traditional ordinary kriging, three non-linear transform-based kriging algorithms such as log-normal kriging, multi-Gaussian kriging and indicator kriging are applied for spatial interpolation of geochemical As and Pb elements. Cross validation based on a leave-one-out approach is applied and then prediction errors are computed. The impact of the sampling density of the ground survey data on the prediction errors are also investigated. Through the case study, indicator kriging showed the smallest prediction errors and superior prediction capabilities of very low and very high values. Other non-linear transform based kriging algorithms yielded better prediction capabilities than traditional ordinary kriging. Log-normal kriging which has been widely applied, however, produced biased estimation results (overall, overestimation). It is expected that such quantitative comparison results would be effectively used for the selection of an optimal kriging algorithm for spatial interpolation of ground survey data with asymmetric distributions.

  • Radon, which enters the interior environment from soil, rocks, and groundwater, is a radioactive gas that poses a serious risk to humans. Indoor radon concentrations are measured to investigate the risk of radon gas exposure and reliable radon concentration mapping is then performed for further analysis. In this study, we compared the predictive performance of various univariate kriging algorithms, including ordinary kriging and three nonlinear transform-based kriging algorithms (log-normal, multi-Gaussian, and indicator kriging), for mapping radon concentrations with an asymmetric distribution. To compare and analyze the predictive performance, we carried out jackknife-based validation and analyzed the errors according to the differences in the data intervals and sampling densities. From a case study in South Korea, the overall nonlinear transform-based kriging algorithms showed better predictive performance than ordinary kriging. Among the nonlinear transform-based kriging algorithms, log-normal kriging had the best performance, followed by multi-Gaussian kriging. Ordinary kriging was the best for predicting high values within the spatial pattern. The results from this study are expected to be useful in the selection of kriging algorithms for the spatial prediction of data with an asymmetric distribution.
