Comparisons in shear behaviour are made between aqueous suspensions of a laterite ore and aqueous suspensions of pure goethite ($\alpha$-FeOOH), following prior papers in which the rheologies of the two mineral suspensions were characterized individually. Drawing comparisons is appropriate because the ore sample was about 65% goethite and it was originally thought that the pure goethite might serve as a model of the more complex laterite. Viscosity measurements of the two suspensions show that, at the same solids fraction, the goethite suspensions were more viscous by an order of magnitude, even though the goethite particles had much smaller aspect ratios. Similarly, yield stresses for the goethite suspensions were at least an order of magnitude higher. The most significant difference was in transient behaviour. Time-dependent effects were investigated by subjecting a fluid to a step change or a ramp sequence in shear rate, and measuring the resulting shear stress over time. In most cases, transient behaviour could not be detected in the goethite suspensions, whereas stresses in the laterite suspensions relaxed over periods of order 10 seconds. The disparate results indicate that a goethite suspension is a poor model of a laterite slurry.
The current study describes experimental and computational work on the passive control of the steady and unsteady condensation shock waves, which are generated in a transonic nozzle. The bleed slots are installed on the contoured wall of the transonic nozzle in order to control the magnitude of the condensation shock wave and its oscillations. For computations, a droplet growth equation is incorporated into the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation systems. Computations are carried out using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme with a second-order tractional time step. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is employed to close the governing equations. An experiment using an indraft transonic wind tunnel is made to validate the computational results. The current computations represented well the experimental flows. From both the experimental and computational results it is found that the magnitude of the condensation shock wave in the bleed slotted nozzle is significantly reduced, compared with no passive control of solid wall. The oscillations of the condensation shock wave are successfully suppressed by a bleed slot system.
By use of an Integral Hellmann-Feynman formula, the cubic crystal field splitting 1O Dq in $KNiF_3$ is calculated from first principles. Numerical values of covalency parameters and necessary integrals are quoted from Sugano and Shulman. The result, 7100$cm^{-1}$, is in excellent agreement with the observed value, 7250$cm^{-1}$. It is found that higher order perturbation energy correction is of the same order of magnitude as 10 Dq itself and is, therefore, essential tin calculating 10 Dq from first principles. It is also found that the point charge potential is the dominant part of the crystal field potential.

It is investigated quantitative relations between the magnetic storm magnitude and the solar wind parameters such as the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (hereinafter, IMF) magnitude (B), the southward component of IMF (Bz), and the dynamic pressure during the main phase of the magnetic storm with focus on the role of the interplanetary shock (hereinafter, IPS) in order to build the space weather fore-casting model in the future capable to predict the occurrence of the magnetic storm and its magnitude quantitatively. Total 113 moderate and intense magnetic storms and 189 forward IPSs are selected for four years from 1998 to 2001. The results agree with the general consensus that solar wind parameter, especially, Bz component in the shocked gas region plays the most important role in generating storms (Tsurutani and Gonzales, 1997). However, we found that the correlations between the solar wind parameters and the magnetic storm magnitude are higher in case the storm happens after the IPS passing than in case the storm occurs without any IPS influence. The correlation coefficients of B and $BZ_(min)$ are specially over 0.8 while the magnetic storms are driven by IPSs. Even though recently a Dst prediction model based on the real time solar wind data (Temerin and Li, 2002) is made, our correlation test results would be supplementary in estimating the prediction error of such kind of model and in improving the model by using the different fitting parameters in cases associated with IPS or not associated with IPS rather than single fitting parameter in the current model.

In this paper, we have analysed frequency-dispersion characteristics of higher-order modes for uniform planar transmission lines, using the 2-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. The method presented in this paper uses both informations of amplitude and phase of the electromagnetic spectrum to determine resonant frequencies, while methods previously reported use the magnitude only. This algorithm is very useful when a resonant mode has a relatively small magnitude, where the identification of the resonant mode is quite difficult. Numerical results show that a strip line supports few higher-order modes within the frequency range of 20 GHz, but there occur many higher-order modes in the structure of grounded coplanar waveguide, where resonant frequencies of the first higher-order mode is very close to those of the fundamental mode and there occur lots of very adjacent higher-order modes. As in this example, for the analysis of planar transmission lines which support many resonant modes very close each other, the method presented in this paper can be applied very efficiently.
Since the frequency of the earthquake occurrence in Korean peninsular is continuously increasing, the possibility that massive landslides are triggered by earthquake is also growing in Korea. Previously, the landslide is known to be induced by large magnitude earthquake, whose magnitude is larger than 6.0. However, the landslide can be induced by only small magnitude earthquake, especially in the fully saturated soil. Therefore, the susceptibility of landslide caused by small magnitude earthquake in fully saturated soil is analyzed in this study. For that, the topographical and geological characteristics of the site were obtained and managed by GIS software. In the procedure of the study, slope angle, cohesion, friction angle, unit weight of soil were obtained and constructed as a spatial database layer. Combining these data sets in a dynamic model based on Newmark's displacement analysis, the landslide displacements were estimated in each grid cell. In order to check out the possibility of the earthquake induced landslides, the level of the groundwater table is varied from dry to 80% saturated soil. In addition, in order to analyze the effect of the magnitude of earthquake and distance to epicenter, four different earthquakes epicenters were considered in the study area.

The North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Wide survey covered about 5.4 $deg^2$, a nearly circular area centered on the NEP, using nine passbands of InfraRed Camera (IRC). We present the photometric properties of the data sets, and the nature of the sources detected in this field. The number of detected sources varied according to the filter band: with about 109,000 sources in the NIR, about 20,000 sources in the MIR-S, and about 16,000 sources seen in the MIR-L channel. The $5{\sigma}$ detection limits are about 21 mag in the NIR and 19.5 - 18.5 mag in the MIR bands in terms of the AB magnitude. 50% completeness levels are about 19.8 mag at $3{\mu}m$, 18.6 mag at $9{\mu}m$, and 18 mag at $18{\mu}m$ band (in AB magnitude), respectively. In order to validate the detected sources, all of them are confirmed by matching tests with those in other bands. The 'star-like' sources, defined by the high stellarity and magnitude cut from the optical ancillary data, appear statistically to have a high probability of being stars. The nature of the various types of extragalactic sources in this field are discussed using the color-color diagrams of the NIR and MIR bands with the redshift tracks of galaxies providing useful guidelines.

This paper addresses the problem of controlling the envelope's power peak of single carrier modulated signals, band limited by root-raised cosine (RRC) pulse shaping filters, in order to reduce power amplifier back-off for very small aperture terminals ground stations. Magnitude modulation (MM) is presented as a very efficient solution to the peak-to-average power ratio problem. This paper gives a detailed description of the MM concept and its recent evolutions. It starts by extending the look-up-table (LUT) based approach of the MM concept to M-ary constellations with M ${\leq}$ 16. The constellation and RRC symmetries are explored, allowing considerable reduction on LUT computation complexity and storage requirements. An effective multistage polyphase (MPMM) approach for the MM concept is then proposed. As opposed to traditional LUT-MM solutions, MM coefficients are computed in real-time by a low complexity multirate filter system. The back-off from high-power amplifier saturation is almost eliminated (reduction is greater than 95%) with just a 2-stage MPMM system even for very demanding roll-off cases (e.g., ${\alpha}$ = 0,1). Also, the MPMM is independent of modulation in use, allowing its easy application to constellations with M > 16.
The paper aims at analyzing the stress distribution around an underground opening that is subjected to non-symmetrical surface loading with emphasis on opening shapes with sharp corners and the stress concentrations developed at these locations. The analysis is performed utilizing the BIE method coupled with the Neumann's series. In order to implement this approach, the special recurrent relations for half plane were proven and the modified Shanks transform was incorporated to accelerate the series convergence. To demonstrate the capability of the developed approach, a horseshoe shape opening with sharp corners was investigated and the location and magnitude of the maximum hoop stress was calculated. The dependence of the maximum hoop stress location on the parameters of the surface loading (degree of asymmetry, size of loaded area) and of the opening (the opening height) was studied. It was found that the absolute magnitude of the maximum hoop stress (for all possible surface loading locations) is developed at the roof points when the opening height/width ratio is relatively large or when the pressure loading area is relatively narrow (compared to the roof arch radius), and contrarily, when the opening height/width ratio is relatively small or when the surface pressure is applied to a relatively wide area, the absolute magnitude of the maximum hoop stress is developed at the bottom sharp corner points.
