In this study, we investigated middle school student' ability in estimating order of magnitude of physical quantities. Participants were 448 students of seventh grades and ninth graders in Seoul area. A multiple-choice typed questionnaire was designed for estimating five physical quantities such as length, mass, speed, volume, and density. The answers were analyzed through dimension of quantity, size of object, students' grade and their gender. In the results, more than two thirds of all participants chose the right order of magnitude in estimating length, but only around a quarter of them did so in estimating density. They had a tendency to show lower ability when they estimated order of magnitude of more complex dimensioned quantity. Moreover, students' answers had relatively wide distribution in estimating smaller sized objects. Through there was no big difference between seventh graders and ninth graders in estimation, male students where better in estimating base quantities, especially in length. However, more than half of participants did not choose the right order of magnitude in total and it showed their lack of qualitative understanding about these physical quantities and meaningless usage of unit in measuring.
One of the most difficult problems in depth control for underwater vehicle is the effect of seaway disturbance. One component of the seaway forces is of large magnitude with a relatively narrow-band, first order component. The other component is generaly of somewhat smaller magnitude, second order component. Since the magnitude of the first order component is generally much greater than the compensating force that can be generating by the planes, it is undesirable for the controller to generate a control command. In this paper, we disigned adaptive notch filtering system using filter bank structure. Energies of each band-passed signal are obtained by MA(Moving Average) method and compared to produce center frequency. By adapting this parameter to notch filter, 1st order seaway disturbance can be removed, which lead to the improvement of automatic depth control system.
This paper evaluates the scaling of ground motions recorded from nine intermediate-depth earthquakes produced in the Vrancea seismic zone in Romania. The considered ground motion database consists of 363 horizontal recordings obtained on soil classes B and C (according to Eurocode 8). An analysis of the inter- and intra-event spectral accelerations is performed in order to gain information regarding the magnitude and distance scaling of the Vrancea ground motions. The analyses reveal a significant influence of the earthquake magnitude and focal depth on the distance scaling and different magnitude and distance scaling for the two soil classes. A linear magnitude and distance scaling is inferred from the results for the range of magnitudes $5.2{\leq}M_W{\leq}7.1$. The results obtained are checked through stochastic simulations and the influence of the stress drop and kappa values on the ground motion levels is assessed. In addition, five ground motion models which were tested in other studies using recordings from Vrancea earthquakes are analyzed in order to evaluate their corresponding host stress drop and kappa. The results show generally a direct connection between the host kappa values and the host stress drop values. Moreover, all the ground motion models depict magnitude dependent host kappa and stress drop levels.
One of the most difficult problems in depth control for underwater vehicle is the effect of seaway disturbance. When a underwater vehicle operates in a near surface environment, the seaway generates essentially two types of stochastic disturbances that influence the boat notion. One component of the seaway forces is of large magnitude with a relatively narrow-band, first order component. The other component is generally of somewhat smaller magnitude, second order component. Since the magnitude of the first order component is generally such greater than the compensating force that can be generating by the planes, it is undesirable for the controller to generate a control command. In this paper, we used LPC(Linear Predictive Coding) processing to uncontrollable seaway disturbance. This method can be used extensively in sensor signal processing of underwater vehicles.

We deal with second order NMP(Non-Minimum Phase) systems which are difficult to control with conventional methods because of their inherent characteristics of undershoot. In such systems, reducing the undesirable undershoot phenomenon makes the response time of the systems much longer. Moreover, it is impossible to control the magnitude of undershoot in a direct way and to predict the response time. In this paper, we propose a novel two sliding mode control scheme which is capable of determining the magnitude of undershoot and thus the response time of NMP systems a priori. To do this, we introduce two sliding lines which are in charge of control in turn. One is used to stabilize the system and achieve asymptotic regulation eventually like the conventional sliding mode methods and the other to stably control the magnitude of undershoot from the beginning of control until the state meets the first sliding line. This control scheme will be proved to have an asymptotic regulation property. The computer simulation shows that the proposed control scheme is very effective and suitable for controlling the second order NMP system because it can decide the magnitude of undershoot in a direct and stable way and reduce the response time compared with the conventional ones.
In this paper we propose Fourier magnitudes based privacy preserving clustering on time-series data. The previous privacy-preserving method, called DFT coefficient method, has a critical problem in privacy-preservation itself since the original time-series data may be reconstructed from privacy-preserved data. In contrast, the proposed DFT magnitude method has an excellent characteristic that reconstructing the original data is almost impossible since it uses only DFT magnitudes except DFT phases. In this paper, we first explain why the reconstruction is easy in the DFT coefficient method, and why it is difficult in the DFT magnitude method. We then propose a notion of distance-order preservation which can be used both in estimating clustering accuracy and in selecting DFT magnitudes. Degree of distance-order preservation means how many time-series preserve their relative distance orders before and after privacy-preserving. Using this degree of distance-order preservation we present greedy strategies for selecting magnitudes in the DFT magnitude method. That is, those greedy strategies select DFT magnitudes to maximize the degree of distance-order preservation, and eventually we can achieve the relatively high clustering accuracy in the DFT magnitude method. Finally, we empirically show that the degree of distance-order preservation is an excellent measure that well reflects the clustering accuracy. In addition, experimental results show that our greedy strategies of the DFT magnitude method are comparable with the DFT coefficient method in the clustering accuracy. These results indicate that, compared with the DFT coefficient method, our DFT magnitude method provides the excellent degree of privacy-preservation as well as the comparable clustering accuracy.

An empirical formula for estimating duration magnitude(MD)is determined by analyzing 619 epicentral distance-duration data set, obtained from earthquakes of 1989-1998 recorded at the KMA network. Based on two assumptions: 1) observed signal duration decreases with increasing epicentral distance, and 2) seismographs of KMA are set at low-gain and therefore inclusion of sensitivity correction term in the equation is not necessary, scaling predicted duration at epicenter to Tsuboi's local magnitude yielded the duration magnitude equation: MD =2.0292$\times$log$\tau$+0.00123Δ-1.4017 for 1/0$\leq$ML$\leq$5.0, where $\tau$is total signal duration(sec)and Δis epicentral distance(km). Event by event comparison of ML values against MD estimates for t152 events shows that for events having a same ML the difference in MD estimates reaches as high as 1.1 magnitude units. So, to test the usefulness of the duration magnitude equation, we have calculated ML-MD relations by which duration magnitude estimates are converted to local magnitudes ("predicted" ML, say) which are then compared with the directly determined local magnitude values. Except for events with stations where duration is anomalously reestimates(predicted ML) which are in an agreement within a 0.2 magnitude units with the corresponding ML values. Although this study could gain some insights into magnitudes of the past events, we still need to re-examine all the observables in order to obtain more reliable and precise information about magnitude and hypocenter location. So we will pursue a new local-magnitude scaling, as well as refinement of the duration magnitude equation, starting soon with re-reading the amplitudes-arrival time records of (and hence relocating) 250+earthquakes of 1979-present recorded at the KMA network. Thus, with more reliable and precise earthquake parameters determined we would better understand the recent seismicity and related tectonic process within and adjacent region to the Korean peninsula.peninsula.

In order to establish the intensity-magnitude relation far the Korean earthquakes, those relations for the earthquakes in the Sino-Korean craton were estimated. In this process, earthquake data of northeastern China region whose geological environment is similar to Korea Peninsula were also utilized. These data were analyzed not only with linear fit, but also with non-linear fit. The fellowing relation, M=0.57 $\times$ 1$_{e}$ + 2.86, seems appropriate for the present, but its validity should be tested more in the future.e.
This paper proposes a new islanding detection method for inverter-based distributed generators by continuously injecting a negligible amount of 2nd order harmonic current. The proposed method adopts a proportional resonant (PR) controller for the output current control of the inverter, and a PR filter to extract the 2nd order harmonic voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). The islanding state can be detected by measuring the magnitude ratio of the 2nd order harmonic voltage to the fundamental voltage at the PCC by injecting a 2nd order harmonic current with a 0.8% magnitude. The proposed method provides accurate and fast detection under grid voltage unbalance and load unbalance. The operation of the proposed method has been verified through simulations and experiments with a 5kW hardware set-up, considering the islanding test circuit suggested in UL1741.
An efficient peak detection algorithm in magnitude spectrum is proposed to distinguish the M-frequency shift keying(FSK) signals from other digitally modulated signal. In addition, recognition of the modulation order estimation of FSK signals is also studied based on the fact that the magnitude spectrum of FSK signals reveals the number of peaks equal to the modulation order. When no a priori information about the signals, we utilize the histogram of the magnitude spectrum to determine the threshold which is important factor in peak detection algorithm. The simulation results show high probability of classification under 500 symbols and signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) higher than 4dB.
