  • As a cornerstone of assembly automation, the automatic part feeders are used to feed the various kind of the parts to the assembly workstation in the desired order and fashion. In this paper, EXPERT SYSTEM consisting of the data base for the feeding functions and part properties plus the rule base for the selection of feeder types is developed. The symbolic data of the part properties are used as basic factors in the selection rule of the suitable feeder types.

  • By the recent fast growth of e-commerce markets, it has been stimulated to study order picking systems to improve their efficiency in distribution centers. Many companies and researchers have been developed various types of order picking systems and pursued the corresponding optimal operation policies. However, the performances of the systems with the optimal policies often depend on the structures of the centers and the operation environments. Based on a simulation model that mimics a unique zone picking system operated by a real company in the Republic of Korea, this study compares several operation policies and finds the most appropriate order selection rule and worker assignment policy for the system. Under all scenarios considered in this study, simulation results show that it is recommendable to assign more efficient workers to the zones with heavier workload. It also shows that selecting the order with the maximum number of non-repeatedly visited zones from the order list provides the most consistent and stable performances with respect to flow time, makespan, and utilization of the system even under the scenario with the breakdown zones. On the other hand, selecting the order with the minimum ratio of penalty to the number of zones performs the worst in all scenarios considered.

  • This paper deals with the problem of space allocation of items within a warehouse. Recognizing the importance of weights associated with material handling, mathematical models are developed for two cases, out-and-back selection and storage retrieval interleaving. It is proved that the density order index rule we proposed generates an optimal solution for the first model. An example problem solved with the pairwise interchange method indicates that the rule is also fairly efficient for the second model. The proposed rule is compared with other assignment rules of warehouse space such as COI rule, space and popularity.

  • This paper deals with the selection of a proper dispatching rule for an one-process Job scheduling that follows a particular distribution of an order production. That is, it makes a distribution on an order per unit period and applies to simulation model that uses it. This study consists of two purposes either seeks adequately production scheduling using priority rule or seeks extension of the facilities that increase current production efficiency through computer simulation in scheduling.

  • As humans perform many tasks using computers, HCI(Human-Computer Interaction) has received much attention these days. One objective of HCI research is to propose how to design more consistent systems. In order to evaluate the consistency of HCI devices from the user's perspective, several models such as TAG(Task Action Grammar), GOMS(Goals-Operators-Methods-Selection Rule), and GTN(General Transition Network) have been developed. TAG specifies actions to perform tasks in terms of rule schema. It has been verified that the less the number of rule schema is, the better users perform the tasks due to assumably higher consistency. This paper hypothesizes that the consistency of systems depends not only on the number of rule schema but also on the distances between rule schema. That is, the closer the rule schema are, the easier it is to acquire the whole set of rule schema. An experiment supported this hypothesis. Therefore, distances between rule schema should be considered as well as the number of rule schema when designing systems.

  • This paper describes an intelligent control-based job scheduler, named ESIJOBS, for flexible manufacturing system. In order to construct rulebase of this system, traditional rules of job scheduling in FMS are examined and evaluated. This result and the repetitional simulations with graphic monitoring system are used to form the rulebase of ESIJOBS, which is composed of three parts:six part selection rules, four machine center selection rules, and twenty-one metarules. Appropriate scheduling rule sets are selected by this rulebase and manufacturing system status. The performances of all simulations are affected by random breakdowns of major FMS components during each simulation. Six criteria are used to evaluate the performance of each scheduling. The two modes of ESIJOBS are simulated and compared with combinational 24 rule-set simulations. In this comparison ESIJOBS dominated the other rule-set simulations and showed the most excellent performance particularly in three criteria.

  • Selecting suppliers in the global supply chain is the very difficult and complicated decision making problem particularly due to the various types of supply risk in addition to the uncertain performance of the potential suppliers. This paper proposes a multi-phase decision making model for supplier selection under supply risks in global supply chains. In the first phase, the model suggests supplier selection solutions suitable to a given condition of decision making using a rule-based expert system. The expert system consists of a knowledge base of supplier selection solutions and an "if-then" rule-based inference engine. The knowledge base contains information about options and their consistency for seven characteristics of 20 supplier selection solutions chosen from articles published in SCIE journals since 2010. In the second phase, the model computes the potential suppliers' general performance indices using a technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) based on their scores obtained by applying the suggested solutions. In the third phase, the model computes their risk indices using a TOPSIS based on their historical and predicted scores obtained by applying a risk evaluation algorithm. The evaluation algorithm deals with seven types of supply risk that significantly affect supplier's performance and eventually influence buyer's production plan. In the fourth phase, the model selects Pareto optimal suppliers based on their general performance and risk indices. An example demonstrates the implementation of the proposed model. The proposed model provides supply chain managers with a practical tool to effectively select best suppliers while considering supply risks as well as the general performance.

  • We have described the optimal process route selection model for the PCB(printed circuit board) auto-insertion line. This PCB assembly line is known as a FFL(flexible flow line) which produces a range of products keeping the flow shop properties. Under FFL environments, we have emphasized the balancing of work-loads in order to maximize total productivity of PCB auto-insertion line. So we have developed a heuristic algorithm based on a work-order selection rule and min-max concept for the job route selection model.

  • Spherical micelles of poly(styrene-b-isoprene) (SI) diblock copolymers in selective solvents have been reported to pack onto either face-centered cubic (fcc) or body-centered cubic (bcc) lattices. The selection rule for fcc and bcc lattices has been understood in terms of the intermicellar potentials, and they have been quantified using the ratio of the corona layer thickness to the core radius, $L/R_c$, as suggested by McConnell and Gast. In order to test the validity of the McConnell-Gast criterion, this study compared the $L/R_c$ values from various solutions i.e. nine SI copolymers in several different selective solvents. The McConnell-Gast criterion was not found to be a determining factor, even though it could explain the fcc/bcc selection qualitatively. From the phase diagrams, the transition between fcc and bcc phases was also considered as a function of concentration and temperature, and their physical mechanisms are discussed based on the recent mean-field calculation reported by Grason.

  • In this study, It is assumed that customers are both usage unit of spare parts and stores of displaying and selling the goods that are installation unit of having the spare parts. The demand pattern through the effective order of spare parts and issue list in installation unit is investigated based on the assumption. Current ASL (Authorized Stockage List) selection of the army has been conducted in the way of using the analysis result of real usage experiences on spare parts used during the Korea War. For this study, ASL selection criteria and procedures based on army regulations and field manuals are specified. Since the traditional method does not presents the association analysis on spare parts used for the current equipment operating and does not have the clear criterion and analysis system about the ASL selection, in order to solve these problems, it was carried out that the association rule is employed for analyzing relationship between the effective order and issue list of the spare parts in point of the spare parts between usage unit and occurring month about purchase spare parts based on the star-schema table. Finally the new ASL selection way using the analysis result is proposed.
