  • The possible configurations of hydroxyl group in hexagonal hydroxyapatite were identified through molecular orbital calculation. The molecular orbital interaction between O and H in hydroxyl column was analyzed using charge variation and Bond Overlap Population (BOP). We supposed 5 kinds of O-H bond configurations as cluster types of I, II, III, IV, and V. Mulliken's population analysis was applied to evaluate ionic charges of O, H, P, and Ca ions, and BOPs (Bond Overlap Populations) in order to discuss the bond strength change by the atomic arrangement. The stability of each O-H bond configuration was analyzed using bond overlap and ionic charge.

  • Seven fully optimized geometries of 3,6-dihydrazino-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (DHT) dimers have been obtained with density functional theory (DFT) method at the B3LYP/$6-311++G^{**}$ level. The intermolecular interaction energy was calculated with zero point energy (ZPE) correction and basis set superposition error (BSSE) correction. The greatest corrected intermolecular interaction energy of the dimers is $-23.69\;kJ{\cdot}mol^{-1}$. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis is performed to reveal the origin of the interaction. Based on the vibrational analysis, the changes of thermodynamic properties from the monomers to dimer with the temperature ranging from 200.0 K to 800.0 K have been obtained using the statistical thermodynamic method. It was found that the hydrogen bonds dominantly contribute to the dimers, while the binding energies are not only determined by hydrogen bonding. The dimerization process can not occur spontaneously at given temperatures.

  • The stereoselectivity of the intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions of 1 and its derivatives were investigated by ab initio calculations. The stereoselectivity mainly originates from the steric repulsion and the orbital interactions. The additional s-cis and s-trans conformations by introducing the carbonyl group at the neighbor of diene or dienophile may change the stereoselectivity, hence this kind of substitution can be utilized for stereoselectivive asymmetric synthesis.

  • An enhancement of through-bond interaction by bond angle distortion in pyrazine was examined using various MO methods. Results of MINDO/3 geometry optimization with an angle (${\alpha}$) at $C_2$ atom fixed to 120∼90$^{\circ}$ lead to distorted structures in which the distorted bond is brought closer toward lone pair orbital n of N atom. It was also found that the bond angle distortion increased the P character at the atom $C_2$, resulting in an increased vicinal overlap between n and the $C_2-C_3$ bond. The FMO patterns of ${\sigma}$ framework showed three-fold degeneracy, one of which was of different symmetry which mixes in the symmetry adapted pair, $n_+\;and\;n_-;\;both\;n_+\;and\;n_-$ orbitals thus can interact with both FMOs of the ${\sigma}$ framework. The LCBO-MO analysis with partial elimination of bonds, antibonds or both, however, revealed that the main interaction of $n_+$ was with the HO-${\sigma}$ and that of $n_-$ was with the LU-${\sigma}^{\ast}$ orbital of the ${\sigma}$ framework.

  • We have investigated electronic structuresof antiferromagnetic YBaCo_2O_5 using the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) + U method. The charge and orbital ordered insulating ground state is correctly obtained with the strong on-site Coulomb interaction. Co^{2+} and Co^{3+} ions are found to be in the high spin (HS) and intermediate spin (IS) state, respectively. The tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition is responsible for the ordering phenomena and the spin states of Co ions. The large contribution of the orbital moment to the total magnetic moment indicates that the effect of the spin-orbit coupling is very important in YBaCo_2O_5.

  • The interaction of oxygen molecule with Ni44(111) model surface to which the molecule approaches is studied by calculating the relevant DOS and COOP with the tight-binding EHT method. It is found that the dissociative adsorption of oxygen takes place as a result of electron transfer from the Ni d${\pi}$ orbital to the antibonding 1${\pi}_g$ orbital of the oxygen molecule. This finding is noteworthy to contrast with the case of Ni(100) surface in which the electron transfer takes place from the Ni d${\delta}$ orbital of the nickel surface.

  • Ab initio and extended Huckel calculations have been applied to discuss the electronic structure, ring inversion barrier, and geometry of the $Cp_2TiS_3$ compound. The deformation of four membered ring in the planar geometry is originated from a second-order Jahn-Teller distortion due to the small energy gap between HOMO and LUMO on the basis of extended Huckel calculations. The puckered $C_s$ geometry is stabilized by the interaction of the $x^2-y^2$ metal orbital with the hybrid orbital in sulfur. Ab initio calculations have been carried out to explore the ring inversion process for the model $Cl_2TiS_3$ compound. We have optimized $C_s$ and $C_{2v}$ structures of the model compound at the RHF level. The energy barriers for the ring inversion are sensitive to the used basis set. With 4-31$G^*$ for the Cl and S ligands, the barriers are computed to be 8.41 kcal/mol at MP2 and 8.02 kcal/mol at MP4 level.

  • Stereoselectivities of (4+2) cycloaddition reactions of cyclopentadiene with the methyl-substituted allenic acids and esters were investigated by application of $\pi$-nonbonded interaction ($\pi$-NBI) theory. 2-FMO method has been found to be adequate for determination of endo selectivities of diene(LUMO)-dienophile (LUMO) interaction in the thermal reactions and diene (HOMO)-dienophile (LUMO) interaction in the Lewis acid catalyzed reactions. $\pi$-isoconjugate diene structure was formed by through-bond interaction of allene moiety with methyl group in the cumulated diene system; the methyl substituent acts as a conjugative chain and causes inter-level narrowing effect of the FMO's. In dienophiles which do not form $\pi$-isoconjugate diene system, methyl group acts merely as an electron donating group. In thermal reactions, the stereoselectivities are controlled by $\pi$-nonbonded secondary orbital interaction ($\pi$-NSOI) of methyl substituent, which behaves similarly as an ethylene molecule.
