Design configuration and performance requirements for KOMPSAT-1 propulsion system were described. Operational results of the propulsion system obtained through the satellite Launch and Early Operation Phase were scrutinized. Performance characteristics of the thrusters which are employed for spacecraft attitude control and the corresponding propellant depletion rate were analysed according to satellite operation modes. Additionally, propellant leakproof and thermal control capability were checked out from the view point of system verification. Propellant depletion rates calculated by PVT method in $\Delta$V maneuvering and each attitude control mode produce the very meaningful results for the prediction of total propellant consumption up to the end of satellite mission life.

In a satellite gravimetry mission similar to GRACE, the precision of inter-satellite ranging is one of the key factors affecting the quality of gravity field recovery. In this paper, the impact of ranging precision on the accuracy of recovered geopotential coefficients is analyzed. Simulated precise orbit determination (POD) data and inter-satellite range data of formation-flying satellites containing white noise were generated, and geopotential coefficients were recovered from these simulated data sets using the crude acceleration approach. The accuracy of the recovered coefficients was quantitatively compared between data sets encompassing different ranging precisions. From this analysis, a rough prediction of the accuracy of geopotential coefficients could be obtained from the hypothetical mission. For a given POD precision, a ranging measurement precision that matches the POD precision was determined. Since the purpose of adopting inter-satellite ranging in a gravimetry mission is to overcome the imprecision of determining orbits, ranging measurements should be more precise than POD. For that reason, it can be concluded that this critical ranging precision matching the POD precision can serve as the minimum precision requirement for an on-board ranging device. Although the result obtained herein is about a very particular case, this methodology can also be applied in cases where different parameters are used.
In advance of launch, simulated radiances of the Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI) will be very useful to guess the real imagery of OSMI and to prepare for data processing of OSMI. The data processing system for OSMI which is one of sensors aboard Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) scheduled for launch in 1999 is developed based on the SeaWiFS Data Analysis System (SeaDAS). Simulation of radiances requires information on the spectral band, orbital and scanning characteristics of the OSMI and KOMPSAT spacecraft. This paper also describes a method to create simulated radiances of the OSMI over the oceans. Our method for constructing a simulated OSMI imagery is to propagate a KOMPSAT orbit over a field of Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) pigment concentrations and to use the values and atmospheric components for calculation of total radiances. A modified Brouwer-Lyddane model with drag was used for the realistic orbit prediction, the CZCS pigment concentrations were used to compute water-leaving radiances, and a variety of radiative transfer models were used to calculate atmospheric contributions to total radiances detected by OSMI. Imagery of the simulated OSMI radiances for 412, 443, 490, 555, 765, 865nm was obtained. As expected, water-leaving radiances were only a small fraction (below 10%) of total radiances and sun glint contaminations were observed near the solar declination. Therefore, atmospheric correction is critical in the calculation of pigment concentration from total radiances. Because the imagery near the sun's glitter pattern is virtually useless and must be discarded, more advanced data collection planning will be required to succeed in the mission of OSMI which is consistent monitoring of global oceans during three year mission lifetime.
At present, many ground stations all over the world are using NORAD orbit element data in order to track and communicate with Earth orbiting satellites. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) observes thousands of Earth orbiting objects on daily basis and provides their orbital information via internet. The orbital data provided by NORAD, which is also called two line element (TLE) sets, allows ground stations to predict the time-varying positions of satellites accurately enough to communicate with the satellites. In order to complete the mission of a high resolution remote sensing satellite which requires very high positional determination and control accuracy, however, a mission control and tracking ground station is dedicated for the observation and positional determination of the satellite rather than using NORAD orbital sets. In the case of KITSAT-3, NORAD orbital elements are currently used for image acquisition planning and for the processing of acquired images due to the absence of a dedicated KITSAT-3 tracking ground system. In this paper, we tested and analyzed the accuracy of NORAD orbital elements and the appropriate prediction model to determine how accurately a satellite acquisites an image of the location of interest and how accurately a ground processing system can generate the catalog of the images.
Geostationary Ocean Color Imager 2 (GOCI-II) on Geo-KOMPSAT-2 (GK2B)satellite was developed as a mission successor of GOCI on COMS which had been operated for around 10 years since launch in 2010 to observe and monitor ocean color around Korean peninsula. GOCI-II on GK2B was successfully launched in February of 2020 to continue for detection, monitoring, quantification, and prediction of short/long term changes of coastal ocean environment for marine science research and application purpose. GOCI-II had already finished IAC and IOT including early in-orbit calibration and had been handed over to NOSC (National Ocean Satellite Center) in KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency). Radiometric calibration was periodically conducted using on-board solar calibration system in GOCI-II. The final calibrated gain and offset were applied and validated during IOT. And three video parameter sets for one day and 12 video parameter sets for a year was selected and transferred to NOSC for normal operation. Star measurement-based INR (Image Navigation and Registration) navigation filtering and landmark measurement-based image geometric correction were applied to meet the all INR requirements. The GOCI2 INR software was validated through INR IOT. In this paper, status and results of IOT, radiometric calibration and INR of GOCI-II are analysed and described.

Climate change adaptation must be prepared, because the pattern of climate change in Korea is higher than the global average. In particular, it is estimated that Korea's economic loss due to climate change will reach 2,800 trillion won, and at least 300 trillion won will be needed for adaptation to climate change(KEI, 2011). Accurate climate change forecasts and impact forecasts are essential for efficient use of enormous climate change adaptation costs. For this climate change prediction and impact analysis, it is necessary to grasp not only the global average concentration but also the inhomogeneity of the greenhouse gas concentration which appears in each region. In this study, we analyze the feasibility of developing a greenhouse gas observation satellite, which is a cause of climate change, and present a development plan for a low orbit environmental satellite by examining the current status of the operation of the greenhouse gas observation satellite. The GHG monitoring satellite is expected to expand the scope of environmental monitoring by water/soil/ecology in addition to climate change, along with weather/agriculture/soil observation satellites.

A Satellite transponder is mounted on the Satellite and performs radio communications with the ground station. A Digital transponder compared to The analog transponder is made easy and accurate performance prediction. Also Modulation Scheme, Data Rate, Loop Bandwidth, Modulation Index and etc. can be changed on orbit, by implementing FPGA can reduce the weight and volume. The core technology of digital transponder is Carrier Recovery loop. Dynamic Range, Frequency Tracking Range, Frequency Tracking Rate and Coherent performance are determined by the performance of the Carrier Recovery loop. In this paper, we proposed the structure of Carrier Recovery loop for the Satellite digital transponder, then tested and verified the structure.

As we, human expand its everyday life boundary to the geosynchronous orbit, we have experienced frequent chance of the atmospheric re-entry and surface impact of space objects(satellite and space debris). Recently a satellite re-entry monitoring room in Korea has been operated to predict the time and the location of the re-entry of space objects. However, we do not have a domestic version of a numerical re-entry model for normal operation using TLE (Two line Element) information from the United States Strategic Command yet. The space information from the several space operation centers has been used to analyse the re-entry situations. In this paper, the re-entry time is calculated with TLE based on the several atmosphere models, the result is comprehensively analyzed, a new re-entry case model fitted from the result of the predicted satellite re-entry times by a new Rubber Sheet Shift Method used by the domestic satellite re-entry room is suggested.
In this paper, space radiation environment and single event effect(SEE) have been analyzed for the KOMPSAT-2 operational orbit. As spacecraft external and internal space environment, trapped proton, SEP(solar energetic particle) and GCR(galactic cosmic ray) high energy Protons and heavy ions spectrums are analyzed. Finally, SEU and SEL rate prediction has been performed for the Intel 80386 microprocessor CPU that is planned to be used in the KOMPSAT-2. As the estimation results, under nominal operational condition, it is predicted that trapped proton and high energetic proton induced SBU effect will not occur. But, it is predicted that heavy ion induced SEU can occur several times during KOMPSAT-2 3-year mission operation. KOMPSAT-2 has been implementing system level design to mitigate SEU occurrence using processor CPU error detection function of the on-board flight software.

In the paper, we predict the number of multi-GNSS satellites and visible satellites with the navigation satellite launch plans and their nominal orbit parameters. Based on the methodology, the multi-GNSS navigation performance and DOP (Dilution of Precision) variation from 2015 to 2020 were forecasted by the Matlab simulation. To calculate the position using the multi-GNSS constellation, we determined the time-offset between the two different systems. Two different algorithms were considered for the sake of time-offset determination; that of each was applied to system level and user side. Also, the results from two algorithms were compared for evaluating each performance. For the reality, we applied the 3D map information to the simulation, which is expected to contribute for predicting the future navigation performance in urban canyon.
