This study was performed to investigate the surface properties of electrochemically oxidized pure niobium by anodic oxide and hydrothermal treatment technique. Niobium specimens of $10\times10mm$ in dimension were polished sequentially from #600, #800, #1000 emery paper. The surface pure niobium specimens were anodized in an electrolytic solution that was dissolved calcium and phosphate in water. The electrolytic voltage was set in the range of 250 V and the current density was 10 $mA/cm^2$. The specimen was hydrothermal treated in high-pressure steam at 300$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours using an autoclave. Then, specimens were immersed in the Hanks' solution with pH 7.4 at 37$^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. The surface of specimen was characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis(EDX), potentiostat/galvanostat test, and cytotoxicity test. The results obtained was summarized as follows; According to the result of measuring corrosion behavior at 0.9% NaCl, corrosion resistance was improved more specimens treated with anodic oxide than in hydrothermal treated ones. The multi-porous oxide layer on surface treated through anodic oxidation showed a structure that fine pores overlap one another, and the early precipitation of apatite was observed on the surface of hydrothermal treated samples. According to the result of EDX after 30 days deposition in Hanks' solution, Ca/P was 1.69 in hydrothermal treated specimens. In MTT test, specimens treated through anodic oxidation and hydrothermal treated ones showed spectrophotometer similar to that of the control group. Thus no significant difference in cytotoxicity was observed (P>0.05).

Titanium and its alloys have been widely used for biomedical applications. However, the use of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy in biomaterial is then a subject of controversy because aluminum ions and vanadium oxide have potential detrimental influence on the human body due to vanadium and aluminum. Hence, recent works showed that the synthesis of new Ti-based alloys for implant application involves more biocompatible metallic alloying element, such as, Nb, Hf, Zr and Mo. In particular, Nb and Hf are one of the most effective Ti ${\beta}$-stabilizer and reducing the elastic modulus. Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) is known as excellent method in the biocompatibility of biomaterial due to quickly coating time and controlled coating condition. The anodized oxide layer and diameter modulation of Ti alloys can be obtained function of improvement of cell adhesion. Silicon (Si) and magnesium (Mg) has a beneficial effect on bone. Si in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. In vitro studies have shown that Mg plays very important roles in essential for normal growth and metabolism of skeletal tissue in vertebrates and can be detected as minor constituents in teeth and bone. Therefore, in this study, Si and Mg coatings on the hydroxyapatite film formed Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys by plasma electrolyte oxidation has been investigated using several experimental techniques. Ti-29Nb-xHf (x= 0, 3, 7 and 15wt%, mass fraction) alloys were prepared Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys of containing Hf up from 0 wt% to 15 wt% were melted by using a vacuum furnace. Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys were homogenized for 2 hr at $1050^{\circ}C$. The electrolyte was Si and Mg ions containing calcium acetate monohydrate + calcium glycerophosphate at room temperature. The microstructure, phase and composition of Si and Mg coated oxide surface of Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys were examined by FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD.
The pH changes in 3 cavities prepared at the facial inner dentin and lingual outer dentin of the cervical portion and apical portion of roots filled with calcium hydroxide containing sealers were investigated. 50 extracted permanent teeth with single canal were instrumented with step-back method. An irrigant of 5% NaOCl was used between files. Then 3 small cavities were prepared. The cavity of apical portion and inner dentin cavity of coronal portion was cut a distance of about 1.0mm from the canal wall and outer dentin cavity of coronal portion was cut to a depth of about 0.5mm from root surface. 10 teeth of control group was not filled. 20 teeth were not flushed with 17% EDTA before using root canal sealers and then divided into 2 groups obturated with Sealapex and Apexit. The remaining 20 teeth were flushed with 17% EDTA and 5% NaOCl to remove smear layer and divided into 2 groups obturated with Sealapex and Apexit. The pH change of the dentin in each cavity was measured at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 15, 30 days with pH microelectrode(WPI Co., USA). The results were as follows: 1. The groups obturated with Sealapex and Apexit(calcium hydroxide based-sealers) have no increase in the pH level at root dentin. And there is no significant difference in pH level between groups obturated with Sealapex and Apexit(P>0.05). 2. Differences in pH levels between the treated and untreated groups with EDTA were not significant(P>0.05). 3. There is no significant difference in pH level between apical and cervical dentin, inner and outer dentin throughout the duration of the experiment(P>0.05).

Anthocyanins are naturally occuring phytochemicals and the main components of the coloring of plants, flowers and fruits. They are known to elicit antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and cancer preventive activity. In this study, we investigated anthocyanins in black / yellow soybean seedcoats using different methods of detection - thin layer chromatography (TLC), capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and HPLC analysis. The anthocyanins in soybean seedcoats were extracted by five independent methods of extraction and the aglycons (anthocyanidins) of the corresponding anthocyanins were prepared by acid mediated hydrolysis. The anthocyanin / anthocyanidin in black soybean seedcoat showed characteristic TLC mobility, CZE electrophoretic retention and HPLC migration time while little of anthocyanins were detected from yellow soybean seedcoat. The extracted anthocyanins showed pH dependent retention time in CZE and spectral change in UV-Vis spectrum. HPLC analysis of the hydrolyzed extract of black soybean seedcoat identified the presence of four anthocyanidins. The major anthocyanin in black soybean seedcoat was cyanin (cyanidin-3-O-glucoside), with the relative order of anthocyanidin in cyanidin > delphinidin > petunidin > pelargonidin.

The utilization of x-ray for diagnosis and examination is increasing by about 5-15% every year, therefore, it would be mandatory to protect the patients from exposures and so, studies in this field are performed even now. In dental field, the area of irradiation is limited any to the head and neck area, but the irradiated angle is varied following the objected tooth, so the adjacent structures lens and thyroid gland would be fragile to radiation. And the scattered radiation is one of the complicated problems in the protection because of specificity of dental x-ray and its object structures. The author, by using TLD (Thermo luminescent Dosimeter; Teledyne Isotopes-Model 7300, Element; TLD 200(CaF₂:Dy) and Capintec(Capintec Model 192, PM-30 Diagnostic chamber 28㎖ active volume), tried a measurement of air dose distribution of the scattered radiation and the irradiated dose of lens and thyroid gland under the condition of taking the film on the left maxillary molar. The results were as follows: 1. The half value layer of adapted dental x-ray machine was measured, and is 1.44㎜ Al. 2. The time of irradiation on the left maxillary molar in the Alderson Rando Phantom, the measured doses of left and right lens, and thyroid gland were 8,9mR, 1,2mR and 2,8mR. Under the same conditions, the scattered radiation at the distance of 1 meter from the phantom were 84 μR at the front side, 11μR at the back side, 18μR at the right side and 72μR at the left side. 3. Under the same conditions, the dose showed higher value by about 5% in the presence of object(phantom) than in the case of absence.
Objectives: This study was conducted to clarify the effects of agarwood on histamine release from mast cells in rats and on the scratching behaviors in mice. Methods: Histamine release from rat mast cells induced by compound 48/80 or concanavalin A (Con A) and compound 48/80-induced scratching behavior in mice were examined to investigate the effects of agarwood. The hyaluronidase activity and the 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels in mast cells were examined to investigate the mechanisms for the inhibition of histamine release. The correlation between the inhibitory effects of agarwood on histamine release and the content of its typical ingredients, a 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone derivatives, was analyzed using thin-layer chromatography. Results: Agarwood showed an inhibitory effect on mast-cell histamine release induced by compound 48/80 or Con A without any effect on hyaluronidase activity; this effect involves an increase in the cAMP levels in mast cells. Oral administration of agarwood showed an inhibitory effect on compound 48/80-induced scratching behavior in mice. The inhibitory effects of agarwood on histamine release were quite different, depending on the area where the agarwood was produced, its quality, and its market price. No correlation was found between the inhibitory effects of agarwood on histamine release and the typical ingredients of agarwood, which are 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone derivatives. Conclusion: These results show that agarwood inhibits histamine release from mast cells partially through an increase in the cAMP levels in cells. We suggest that some active ingredients of agarwood must be effective on oral intake and that agarwood can be used to treat patients with a number of conditions, including urticaria, atopic dermatitis, and bronchial asthma, in which an increase in histamine release occurs. Differences in the pharmacological effects of this crude drug among markets may provide important information for the quality control of this herbal medicine.
This study examined the effects of plated temperature on the surface morphology and property of an electrodeposited copper foil. The morphology, crystal structure and electric characteristics of the electrodeposited copper foil were examined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and a four-point probe, respectively. The surface roughness, crystal growth orientation and resistivity could be controlled using various temperature of electrolyte. Large particles were observed on the surface of the copper layer electroplated onto the $30^{\circ}C$. However, a uniform surface, lower resistivity and high flexibility were obtained when a $50^{\circ}C$ electrolyte was used.

The clinical condition Amnesia causes difficulty in learning new information and the inability to recall past events. It is primarily concerned with recent memory loss. Majoon-e-Nisyan (MJN) is a polyherbal Unani formulation, present in a semi-solid form. It is widely used potent drug of the Unani System of Medicine (USM) for treating Nisyan (amnesia). In the present study polyherbal Unani formulation, MJN has been studied for its quality control and acute toxicity. Standardization (quality control) of drugs deals with drug identity, drug quality and purity determination. Standardization of MJN had been done as per the Unani pharmacopoeial parameters approved by World Health Organization (WHO) - Pharmacognostical parameters, Physico-chemical parameters, high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), microbial load, aflatoxin, and heavy metals. Solvents and chemicals used in the study were of analytical grade and used instrument were calibrated. By conducting an acute oral toxicity study in rats, the safety of MJN was assessed. The limit test method of OECD guideline 425 was followed in the study. Results of standardization and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for preparation of MJN may serve as the standard reference in the future. The data generated in the study for the quality control of MJN proved the quality of formulation and shows that MJN is not toxic in rats following acute dosing up to 2000 mg/kg bw. The data obtained in the paper for MJN may be used as a standard guideline for preparation of the formulation which can save time, cost, and resources for future research endeavours.
To evaluate the protective effect of collagen peptide-coated coffee extract on skin aging, cell viability was measured with a MTT assay using cultured CCD-986sk fibroblasts, and its effect on wrinkles in the skin of hairless mice induced by UVB-irradiation was examined. In addition, its effect on procollagen synthesis and anti-oxidative, and its inhibitory activity against collagenase, elastase, tyrosinase and MMP-1 were analysed. After the 30-minute topical treatment, the animals were exposed to UVB irradiation (60-100 mJ/cm2) for 4 weeks and its intensity increased during the period. Under the experimental conditions set in this study, the skin thickness of hairless mice significantly decreased (11.8-21.3%) compared to the control group. Based on these results, the prolonged oral intake of a collagen peptide mixture with coffee is expected to significantly increase the synthesis of procollagen in dermal fibroblasts, thereby contributing to the alleviation of wrinkling and lowered elasticity due to structural damage to the dermal layer caused by UV. The oral intake of collagen-coated coffee contributes to increasing collagen biosynthesis in a dose-dependent manner and alleviates the symptoms of thickened keratin caused by UV irradiation. However, it did not inhibit the enzymes involved in skin aging, whitening, wrinkle improvement, and antioxidation. Based on the these results, it can be concluded that the intake of collagen peptide-coated coffee extract can be utilized as an alternative material for the prevention or treatment of diseases associated with photoaging.
Epidermal growth factor(EGF), a single chain polypeptide of 53 amino acids with a molecular weight of 6,045 Da, was first isolated from the male mouse submandibular glands. EGF stimulates cellular proliferation and differentiation in several tissues and accelerates the rate of wound healing. EGF is bound to the specific receptor(EGFR) on the cell membrane of its target cell. EGFR is a transmembrane glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 170,000 Da and is detectable on a large variety of cell types and tissues. The authors investigated the expression of EGFR in the normal and inflamed human gingival epithelium to study the role of EGFR in the inflammation of the gingival epithelium, and the expression of EGFR in the dental follicle by using in situ mRNA hybridization and immunohistochenistry. The results weree as follows : 1. The expression of EGFR mRNA in the normal gingival epithelium on in situ mRNA hybridization was mainly localized on the basal cell layer, and the spinous layer was weakly positive The granular and cornified layers were negative 2. The expression of EGFR protein in the normal gingival epithelium on inmunohistochemistry was localized on the cornified and granular layers, and the spinous layer was weakly positive. The basal cell layer was completely negative 3. The expression of EGFR mRNA in the inflamed gingival epithelium on in situ mRNA hybridization was evenly and homogeneously distributed in the whole layers of the gingival epithelium except the cornified layer. The staining intensity appeared to increase progressively from the basal cell layer to the cornified layer. 4. The expression of EGFR protein in the inflamed gingival epithelium on immunohistochemistry was evenly and homogeneously distributed in the whole layers of the gingival epithelium. The staining intensity appeared to increase progressively from the cornified layer to the basal cell layer. 5. Strong positive reaction was seen in the epithelial cell rests of Malassez, whereas only background staining was seen in other cells of the dental follicle. In conclusion, the up-regulation of EGFR in the inflamed gingival epithelium and the high amounts of EGFR in the epthelial cell rests of Malassez in the dental follicle can be regarded as responses to the possible damages to the oral environment to maintain the homeostatic conditions.
