Purpose: This study was done to apply Andersen's behavioral model to identify factors that determine oral health-related quality of life in elderly persons. Methods: Participants were 257 people ages 65 years or older. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The variables in the behavioral model, predisposing factors, enabling factors and need factors, explained 31% (F=12.7, p<.001) of variance in oral health-related quality of life. The predisposing factors, enabling factors, need factors and health behavior collectively explained 35% (F=9.22, p<.001) of variance in oral health-related quality of life. Factors influencing oral health-related quality of life in older adults were ADL and IADL, self-reported oral health status, xerostomia and dental care in last 12 months. Conclusions: The analysis results showed that the need factor had the highest level of relative importance of the three factors. The model used for this study can be used to predict oral health-related quality of life.
Objectives: To provide basic data for oral health policy by identifying the differences in oral health behaviors and conditions among middle-aged people in their 40s and 50s and relating these to their health-related quality of life, and to identify factors affecting health-related quality of life. Methods: In this study, secondary data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used. Data were gathered from 8,127 participants, of which 2,353 were middle-aged (40-59 years old). Covariance analysis was performed using a complex sample general linear model to investigate the changes in the subjects' health-related quality of life (EQ-5D) according to their general characteristics, oral health behaviors, and oral health status. Results: Oral health behavior was not significantly related to health-related quality of life. In contrast, a higher oral health status (chewing function) was associated with better health-related quality of life. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study suggested a close relationship between oral health status (chewing function) and health-related quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the importance of oral health in improving the health-related quality of life of middle-aged people in their 40s and 50s, as well as in informing oral health policies and preventive measures for individuals and communities.
Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between oral health and suicide attempts in adults aged 19 years or older using the 7th Korea National Health and Examination Survey (KHANES, 2016-2018). Methods: Of the 24,269 participants in the 7th KHANES (2016-2018), 7,261 adults aged 19 years or older who had an oral health examination were selected. Complex samples crosstabulation (χ2-test) was performed to determine the rate of suicide ideation by general characteristics. Complex samples logistic regression was performed to ascertain the effects of oral health on suicide attempts. Results: Participants with gingivitis were 1.7 times more likely to receive mental health counseling (p<0.05) and 1.6 times more likely to attempt suicide (p<0.05). Conclusions: Oral health is significantly associated with suicide attempts in adults aged 19 years or older, and this emphasizes the importance of oral health management as an intervention for preventing suicide and improving the health of adults.
Purpose : Many studies have confirmed the relationship between physical exercise, chronic diseases, and quality of life, but few of those studies were limited to aerobic exercise. Above all, no research has confirmed the relationship between aerobic exercise and the oral health. This study is significant because it is the first study to confirm the relationship between aerobic exercise, which is practiced more frequently than other exercises, and oral health in adults. Through this study, we hoped to confirm the complex impacts of aerobic exercise on health-related quality of life, oral health-related behavior, and oral health status in adults and to use these impacts as basic data on the importance of aerobic exercise. Methods : In this study, the following analysis was conducted based on a complex sample design that applied stratification variables, cluster variables, and weights using SPSS version 21.0. Complex sample cross-analysis was conducted to identify general characteristics according to aerobic physical activity practice, and oral health-related characteristics according to the aerobic physical activity practice rate. Then, complex sample logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the effect of aerobic physical activity practice on oral health-related characteristics. During the statistical analysis, missing values were treated as valid values, and the statistical significance level was set at .05. Results : Aerobic physical activity practice was 1.39 times higher among the respondents who brushed their teeth after lunch (p<.001), 1.43 times higher among those who used dental floss (p<.001), 1.24 times higher among those who used mouthwash (p=.040), and 1.37 times higher was among those who had not experienced dental treatment (p=.040), which were statistically significant differences. Conclusion : This study found that when an individual's health status is maintained, positive oral health behavior can be achieved by paying attention to oral health, and this appears to contribute to improving oral health.
