  • This 27 year-old male patient had severe mandibular prognathism (right and left mesio-occlusion were 0.4㎝ and 1.2㎝ , respectively). He had good oral health relatively exception of missing teeth. We examined all of his oral and skeletal status with full mouth x-ray taking, study model, and cephalogram. His general condition was good but above examination indicated the surgical operation for the mandibular prognathism. His laboratory tests were within normal limits. We determined surgical operation which was done by extraoral approach bilaterally. Incisions were made bilaterally 1.5㎝ beneath the inferior border of the mandible in the selected area and then the inferior border of the ascending rami was exposed. Retracting the periosteum to the lingual and buccal a slight amount, the cut in the bone was performed by use of bone drill. Avoiding T.M.J. troubles, the proximal segmant was not fixed to anterior segment, being in overlapping state buccally, in order to expect a natural healing by the environmental muscles and ligaments. We had immobilization with intermaxillary fixation by using the multiple Stout's method. He was discharged 17 days after operation. His general condition and operation results were good and satisfactory.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to grasp association with dental hygienists' job expectation through correlation between curricular subjects for the department of dental hygiene and job. Methods : It carried out convenience sampling of dental hospitals where are located in Capital Area, and then conducted a self-administered questionnaire survey targeting 274 dental hygienists who are working here. The statistical program was analyzed by using PSAW 18.0. Results : Research subjects' 60.2% experienced turnover. Its reason accounted for 31.7% with the working condition. As a result of examining difference in experience of turnover according to dental hygienists' individual characteristic and working form, the significant difference was shown in age, marriage, annual salary, working institution, and career. In consequence of confirming association between curricular subjects and job, the majority showed high correlation. However, the correlation with oral physiology, clinical dental hygiene, and dental clinics showed low correlation as the insignificant variable. Conclusions : As a result of this study, the high correlation between curricular subjects and job can be considered to reflect dental hygienists' job expectation. On the other hand, the working condition, professional sense, and turnover experience, which are factors related to dental hygienists' job expectation, were indicated to fail to meet job expectation.

DMFT index and it's condition of first molars statistically are analyzed by Pearson's correlation. 1. The dental health capacity of the first permanent molars was 92.2%. 2. The DMFS index of first permanent molars was 3.97. 3. The dental health capacity of first permanent molars have related with DMFT index(r= -0.895). 4. DMFS index of the first molars have positive relation with DMFT index(r= 0.902). Foundings were revealed as follows; On the nationality base, show the data in the ratio of 38.8% for Vietnamese, 29.1% for Philippine, 12.2% for Chinese and 6.8% for Japanese respectively. Current oral cavity status shows in the ratio of 60% with carious tooth symptoms, 40% without carious tooth symptom. Philippine women have irregular sets of tooth in many a case. • The purpose of this study was to investigate the oral health condition and dental treatment need of low socioeconomic elderly people. A total of 116 elderly people who visited Boramae Hospital were evaluated with oral examination and panoramic radiogaph. The results showed that the most expecting treatment of low income aged people was removable partial denture. It was very clear in the age group of 70-84. In the age group under 70, most of the patients wanted prosthodontic tratement using fixed partial denture or crown. As the result of this study, elderly people with low socioeconomic status under age 85 needed removable partial denture or fixed prosthesis than complete denture. It is necessary to develop a more expanding and customized Senile prosthetic restoration program.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea(OSA) is a form of sleep disordered breathing(SDB) characterized by the occurrence of episodes of complete or partial upper airway obstruction during sleep that is often quantified as the apnea-hyponea index(AHI). It is increasingly being recognized that OSA is a public health hazard and there is increasing evidence that it is associated with an increase in morbidity. Early recognition and diagnosis of this condition may lead to earlier treatments (eg, CPAP, Oral appliances) with reduction of the risk of metabolic disease, cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias and pulmonary hypertension.

  • The general local cause of gingival bleeding is the vessel engorgement and erosion by odontogenic infection. Abnormal gingival bleeding is also associated with systemic causes. Bleeding disorders in which continuous gingival bleeding is encountered include the followings : vascular abnormalities, platelet disorders, hypoprothrombinemia and other coagulation defects. There are classic methods for gingival bleeding control, such as, direct pressure, electrocoagulation, suture, crushing and application of hemostatic agents. If the continuous gingival bleeding is not stopped in spite of the conventional methods, the life of patient is threatened owing to upper airway obstruction, syncope, vomiting and hypovolemic shock. Therefore, the rapid and correct hemostatic method is very important in the emergency condition. This is a case report of continuous gingival bleeding control by primary endodontic drainage & suture in a disabled patient with systemic bleeding disorders.

  • This article discusses accomplishments and historical implications of American missionary dentist W.J. Scheifley and the first Korean dental department, which was established in 1915 in Korea. W.J. Scheifley, with Christian service mind and mission as a dentist, applied to American Protestantic missionary dentist overseas. The dental department in the Severance Union Medical College introduced the scientistic dental education of America, facilitated research on the dental condition of the Korean people, and ran independent dental clinic. W.J. Schiefley criticised the profit-seeking attitude of Japanese dentists and denturist(="IPCHISA", in Korean pronunciation) and emphasized on the significance of Oral Health. He did all kind of dental treatments with advanced equipments like X-ray machine, and managed the collective oral health care for missionaries overseas. He trained medical students and assistants of the dentists with the goal of producing Korean dentists, but he failed due to the Dentist law introduced by Japanese colonial administration that interfered with producing Korean dentists. However, O.R. Avison's proposal of the establishment of dental schools stimulated the establishment of Kyungsung dental school, which provided the basis for the Dental department in the Severance Union Medical College becoming special training institution for Korean Dentists.
