  • Reduced complexity codebook searching for Quantized Equal Gain Transmission(QEGT) is proposed over MIMO-OFDM systems. QEGT codebook is divided into M groups of Q index members. Each group has a representative index. At the 1st stage only the representative indices are searched then the best index is selected. At the 2nd stage the optimum index is determined only among the group of the selected representative index. This strategy reduces the overall index search algorithm comparing to the conventional methods. Monte-Carlo simulation shows that the searching complexity is reduced, but the link-level performance is still almost the same as the conventional methods when the number of transmission antennas are 3 to 7.

  • The proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system consisting of stack and balance of plant (BOP) was modeled in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. High-pressure operating (compressor type) and low-pressure operating (air blower type) fuel cell systems were considered. The effects of two main operating parameters (humidity and the pressure of the supplied gas) on the power distribution characteristics of BOP and the net system efficiency of the two systems mentioned above were compared and discussed. The simulation determines an optimum condition regarding parameters such as the cathode air pressure and the relative humidity for maximum net system efficiency for the operating fuel cell systems. This study contributes to get a basic insight into the fuel cell stack and BOP component sizing. Further research using muliobject variable optimization packages and the approach developed by this study can effectively contribute to an operating strategy for the practical use of fuel cell systems for vehicles.

  • Declutching control is applied to a hemispherical wave energy converter with direct linear electric Power-Take-Off systems oscillating in heave direction in both regular and irregular waves. The direct linear Power-Take-Off system can be simplified as a mechanical spring and damper system. Time domain model is applied to dynamics of the hemispherical wave energy converter in both regular and irregular waves. And state space model is used to replace the convolution term in time domain equation of the heave oscillation of the converter due to its inconvenience in analyzing the controlled motion of the converters. The declutching control strategy is conducted by optimal command theory based on Pontryagin's maximum principle to gain the controlled optimum sequence of Power-Take-Off forces. The results show that the wave energy converter with declutching control captures more energy than that without control and the former's amplitude and velocity is relatively larger. However, the amplification ratio of the absorbed power by declutching control is only slightly larger than 1. This may indicate that declutching control method may be inapplicable for oscillating wave energy converters with direct linear Power-Take-Off systems in real random sea state, considering the error of prediction of the wave excitation force.

  • Minimum weight design of the boom of an excavator with stress and displacement constraints was performed. The procedure of analysis consists of the following steps. The finite element model of the boom was built up by using 227 triangular plate elements each of which has three nodes. And then the finite element program was implemented and its accuracy was verified by comparing its results with those of the commercial structural analysis package-ANSYS 4.4A. For the constraints of stresses and displacements, the design sensitivities of those were computed using direct differentiation method. To verify the reliability of them the results were compared with those of the finite difference method. The optimum design value was obtained by using PLBA(Pshenichny-Lim-Belegundu-Arora)non-linear optimization program which adopts the active set strategy. Using the above results, minimum weight design of an excavator boom showed an effect of 27% reduction in weight.

  • A signal optimization model is proposed by applying the Cell-Transmission Model(CTM) as an embedded traffic flow model to estimate a system-optimal signal timing plan in a transportation network composed of signalized intersections. Beyond the existing signal-optimization models, the CTM provides appropriate theoretical and practical backgrounds to simulate oversaturation phenomena such as shockwave, queue length, and spillback. The model is formulated on the Mixed-Integer Programming(MIP) theory. The proposed model implies a system-optimal in a sense that traffic demand and signal system cooperate to minimize the traffic network cost: the demand departing from origins through route choice behavior until arriving at destinations and the signal system by calculating optimal signal timings considering the movement of these demand. The potential of model's practical application is demonstrated through a comparison study of two signal control strategies: optimal and fixed signal controls.

  • This paper presents an efficient Quantized Equal Gain Transmission(QEGT) codebook index searching technique for MISO beamforming system in a Rayleigh flat fading channel. The searching time for the optimum weight vector among the codebook vectors increases exponentially when the codebook size increases linearly, although the bit error rate decreases. So, newly defined simple metric is proposed for fast searching, which determines a few candidates. Then the conventional method combined with accurate search algorithm selects the optimal index. This strategy significantly reduces the overall search time, while maintaining almost the same bit error rate performance. Furthermore, as the codebook size increases, the search time is considerably decreased compared to that of the conventional approach.

  • Linear motor feed drive systems have been broadly used in machine tools or precision automatic feed systems. Recently, modem machine tools require high speed and high precision feed drive system to achieve high productivity. Unfortunately, a feed drive system, even though it was optimum designed, may experience severe transient vibrations during high-speed operation if its feed rate control is unsuitable. A rough feed rate curve having discontinuity in its acceleration profile causes a serious vibration problem in the feed slides system. This paper presents a feed rate optimization of a machine tool feed slide system, which is driven by a linear motor, for its minimum vibrations. Firstly, a 4-degree-of-freedom lumped parameter model is proposed for the vibration analysis of a linear motor driven machine tool feed drive system. Next, a feed rate optimization of the feed slide is carried out for minimum vibrations. The feed rate curve optimization strategy is to find out the most appropriate acceleration profile with jerk continuity. Of course, the optimized feed rate should approximate to the desired one as possible. A genetic algorithm with variable penalty function was used in this feed rate optimization.

  • Cisplatin-based concurrent chemoradiation plays an undisputed key role as definitive treatment in unresectable patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma head and neck or as an organ preservation strategy. Treatment with 100 mg/m2 3-weekly cisplatin is considered the standard of care but is often associated with several adverse events. The optimum drug schedule of administration remains to be defined and presently, there is insufficient data limiting conclusions about the relative tolerability of one regimen over the other. This review addresses regarding the optimal dose schedule of cisplatin focusing mainly on three-weekly and weekly dose of cisplatin based concurrent chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced head and neck cancer with an emphasis on mucositis, dermatitis, systemic toxicity, compliance, and treatment interruptions. To derive a definitive conclusion, large prospective randomized trials are needed directly comparing standard 3-weekly cisplatin ($100mg/m^2$) with weekly schedule ($30-40mg/m^2$) of concurrent cisplatin based chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma head and neck.

  • The paper describes the improvement on concurrent subspace optimization(CSSO) via automatic differentiation. CSSO is an efficient strategy to coupled multidisciplinary design optimization(MDO), wherein the original design problem is non-hierarchically decomposed into a set of smaller, more tractable subspaces. Key elements in CSSO are consisted of global sensitivity equation, subspace optimization, optimum sensitivity analysis, and coordination optimization problem that require frequent use of 1st order derivatives to obtain design sensitivity information. The current version of CSSO adopts automatic differentiation scheme to provide a robust sensitivity solution. Automatic differentiation has numerical effectiveness over finite difference schemes tat require the perturbed finite step size in design variable. ADIFOR(Automatic Differentiation In FORtran) is employed to evaluate sensitivities in the present work. The use of exact function derivatives facilitates to enhance the numerical accuracy during the iterative design process. The paper discusses how much the automatic differentiation based approach contributes design performance, compared with traditional all-in-one(non-decomposed) and finite difference based approaches.

  • In this paper, an improved Direct Power Control (DPC) algorithm is presented for grid connected three phase PWM rectifiers. The new DPC approach is based on two main tasks. First the optimization of the look-up table, which is well-known in conventional DPC, is outlined for selecting the optimum converter output voltage vectors. Secondly a very simple and effective method is used to directly calculate their duty cycles from the power errors. Therefore, the measured active and reactive powers are made to track their references using hysteresis controllers. Then two vectors are selected and applied during one control cycle to minimize both the active and reactive power ripples. The main advantages of this method are that there is no need of linear current controllers, coordinates transformations or modulators. In addition, the control strategy is able to operate at constant switching frequencies to ease the design of the power converter and the AC harmonic filter. The control exhibits a good steady state performance and improves the dynamic response without any overshoot in the line current. Theoretical principles of the proposed method are discussed. Both simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the performance and effectiveness of this control scheme.
