  • The irrigation reservoir operation models developed were tested with weather and field data, and the sensitivity of the water requirement deficiency indices(WRDI) were checked with different initial reservoir storages, irrigated areas, and other water uses from the reservoir storage. Seven reservoir release rules were applied to Yongseol Reservoir. Twenty year WRDIs were computed to check performances of those reservoir release rules. Mean WRDIs were 138, 198, 198, 200, 240, 344, and 1033mm for ROM, TOS, COS, CRR, MSC, FAS, and SRC, respectively. The results indicated that ROM contributes consistently to higher operation efficiencies of an irrigation reservoir. The test results of LFROM and SFROM showed that reservoir operation with the proposed optimization technique ROM would be better suited for an irrigation district than those with the other rules. And the proposed model could be used as a tool to improve reservoir operations.

  • Biometric performance improvement is a challenging task. In this paper, a hierarchical strategy fusion based on multimodal biometric system is presented. This strategy relies on a combination of several biometric traits using a multi-level biometric fusion hierarchy. The multi-level biometric fusion includes a pre-classification fusion with optimal feature selection and a post-classification fusion that is based on the similarity of the maximum of matching scores. The proposed solution enhances biometric recognition performances based on suitable feature selection and reduction, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA), as much as not all of the feature vectors components support the performance improvement degree.

  • In the rear projection TV, the optimal system configurations of optical parts are presented, which are focused on competitive price and performances. From the initial design with five Seidel aberrations free, aspherization of the plastic lenses, and optimization with tolerances, a new lens consisting of two plastic and one glass lenses was designed. It is able to be used on current broadcast standard NTSC and digital TV in common. The developed CRT-lens assembly could display the 40 to 50 inch image and its resolution is more than 800 TV-lines.

  • This is a Double-Track Railway tunnel in typical Tae-Gu black and gray shale forming part of the No.1 Line of the Tae-Gu Subway. The main fault zone at tunnel is a moderately to highly weathered and closely jointed zone, 0.5 m wide with associated paralled jointing which is slickensided and fractured. After excavation by blasting, the soft rocks should need to be reinforced with optimal supporting pattern which might be better redesigned through the consideration of the results of in-situ rock measurements at the field. Performances fo the field tests included Point Load Test, Schmidt Hammer Test, and field joint measurement gave the detail data for the optimum support design and safe excavation of the No.1 Line of Tae-Gu Subway at the No.1-7 consturction site adn the safety of this redesigned supports system was analysed by the FDM program FLAC.

  • The stabilization control of Inverted Pendulum(IP) system is difficult because of its nonlinearity and structural unstability. Thus, in this paper, an Evolving Neural Network Controller(ENNC) without Error Back Propagation(EBP) is presented. An ENNC is described simply by genetic representation using an encoding strategy for types and slope values of each active functions, biases, weights and so on. By an evolutionary programming which has three genetic operation; selection, crossover and mutation, the predetermine controller is optimally evolved by updating simultaneously the connection patterns and weights of the neural networks. The performances of the proposed ENNC(PENNC) are compared with the ones of conventional optimal controller and the conventional evolving neural network controller(CENNC) through the simulation and experimental results. And we showed that the finally optimized PENNC was very useful in the stabilization control of an IP system.

  • In this paper, skyhook control of a semi-active ER(Electro-Rheological) damper is investigated. The strength of the ER damper is controlled by a high voltage power supply. This paper deals with a two-degree-of-freedom suspension using the damper with ERF for a quarter vehicle system. The control law for semi-active suspensions modeled in this study is developed using skyhook and Linear Quadratic Regulator(LQR) optimal control method. Computer simulation and experimental results show that the semi-active suspension with ERF damper has good performances of ride quality.

  • The absorption characteristics of water vapor into a LiBr-H$_2$O solution flowing down on finned inclined surfaces are numerically investigated in order to study the absorbing performances of different surface shapes of finned tubes as an absorber element. A three-dimensional numerical model is developed. The momentum, energy, and diffusion equations are solved simultaneously using a finite difference method. In order to obtain the temperature and concentration distributions, the Runge-Kutta and the Successive over relaxation methods are used. The flat, circular, elliptic, and parabolic shapes of the tube surfaces are considered in order to find the optimal surface shapes for absorption. In addition, the effects of the fin intervals and Reynolds numbers are studied. The results show that the absorption mainly happens near the fin tip due to the temperature and concentration gradient, and the absorbing performance of the parabolic surface is better than those of the other surfaces.

  • Finite elements based on the partition of unity (PU) approximation have powerful capabilities for p-adaptivity and solutions with high smoothness without remeshing of the domain. Recently, the PU approximation was successfully applied to the three-node shell finite element, properly eliminating transverse shear locking and showing excellent convergence properties and solution accuracy. However, the enrichment with the PU approximation results in a significant increase in the number of degrees of freedom; therefore, it requires greater computational cost, thus making it less suitable for practical engineering. To circumvent this disadvantage, we propose a new strategy to decrease the total number of degrees of freedom in the existing PU-based shell element, without loss of optimal convergence and accuracy. To alleviate the locking phenomenon, we use the method of mixed interpolation of tensorial components and perform convergence studies to show the accuracy and capability of the proposed shell element. The excellent performances of the new shell elements are illustrated in three benchmark problems.
