The main role of an acoustic diffuser is to diffuse reflected sound field spatially. Since the pioneering work of Schroeder, there have been investigations to improve its performance by using shape/sizing optimization methods. In this paper, a gradient-based topology optimization algorithm is newly presented to find the optimal distribution of reflecting materials for maximizing diffuser performance. Time-harmonic acoustic analysis in a two-dimensional acoustic domain is carried out where the domain is discretized by finite elements. Perfectly matched layers are placed to surround the domain to simulate non-reflecting boundary conditions. Design variables are assigned to each element of which material properties are interpolated between those of air and those of a rigid body. An approach to extract the reflected field from the total acoustic field is employed. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, design problems are solved at different frequencies. The performance of the optimized diffusers obtained by the proposed method is compared against that of the conventional Schroeder diffusers.

One of the most efficient designs of solar trackers for photovoltaic panels is the single-axis tracker, which holds the panels along a torque tube that is driven by a motor at the central section. These trackers have evolved to become extremely slender structures due to mechanical optimization against static load and the need of cost reduction in a very competitive market. Owing to the corresponding decrease in mechanical resistance, some of these trackers have suffered aeroelastic instability even at moderate wind speeds, leading to catastrophic failures. In the present work, an analytical and experimental approach has been developed to study that phenomenon. The analytical study has led to identify the dimensionless parameters that govern the motion of the panel-tracker structure. Also, systematic wind tunnel experiments have been carried out on a 3D aeroelastic scale model. The tests have been successful in reproducing the aeroelastic phenomena arising in real-scale cases and have allowed the identification and a close characterization of the phenomenon. The main results have been the determination of the critical velocity for torsional galloping as a function of tilt angle and a calculation methodology for the optimal sizing of solar tracker shafts.

People have been using more energy in the last years. Several research studies were conducted to develop sustainable energy sources that can produce clean energy to fulfill our energy requirements. Using renewable energy sources helps to decrease the harm to the environment caused by conventional power plants. Choosing the right location and capacity for DG-RESs can greatly impact the performance of Radial Distribution Systems. It is beneficial to have a good and stable electrical power supply with low energy waste and high effectiveness because it improves the performance and reliability of the system. This research investigates the ideal location and size for solar and wind power systems, which are popular methods for producing clean electricity. A new artificial intelligent algorithm called Nutcracker Optimization Algorithm (NOA) is used to find the best solution in two common electrical systems named IEEE 33 and 69 bus systems to examine the improvement in the efficiency & reliability of power system network by reducing power losses, making voltage deviation smaller, and improving voltage stability. Finally, the NOA method is compared with another method called PSO and developed Hybrid Algorithm (NOA+PSO) to validate the proposed algorithm effectiveness and enhancement of both efficiency and reliability aspects.
This research was carried out to develop an integrated folding wing made from carbon composite materials. Design requirements were reviewed and composite wing sizing was conducted using design optimization with commercial software. Three composite manufacturing processes including hot-press, pultrusion, and autoclave were evaluated and the most suitable processes for the integrated wing fabrication were selected, with consideration given to performance and cost. The determined manufacturing process was verified by two design development tests for selecting the design concept. Stiffness and strength of the composite wing were estimated through structural analyses. The test loads were calculated and static tests about design limit load and design ultimate load were performed using both wings. As a result, the evaluation criterions of the tests were satisfied and structural safety was verified through the series of structural analyses and testing.

The need to develop method which can improve the shape design efficiency using high quality approximation is being brought up. In this study, to perform shape optimal design of three-dimensional continuum structures an efficient approximation method for stress constraints is proposed, based on expanding the nodal forces in Taylor series with respect to shape variables. Numerical examples are performed using the 3-D cantilever beam and fixed-fixed beam and compared with other method to demonstrate the efficiency and convergence rate of the Force Approximation method. It is shown that by taking advantage of this high quality approximation, the total number of finite element analysis required for shape optimization of 3-D continuum structures can be reduced significantly, resulting to the same level of efficiency achieved previously in sizing optimization problems. Also, shape representation by super curve technique applied to obtain optimal shape finds useful method.
The periodic square wave (PSW) model was successfully applied to the optimal design of a batch-storage network. The network structure can cover any type of batch production, distribution and inventory system, including recycle streams. Here we extend the coverage of the PSW model to multitasking semi-continuous processes as well as pure continuous and batch processes. In previous solutions obtained using the PSW model, the feedstock composition and product yield were treated as known constants. This constraint is relaxed in the present work, which treats the feedstock composition and product yield as free variables to be optimized. This modification makes it possible to deal with the pooling problem commonly encountered in oil refinery processes. Despite the greater complexity that arises when the feedstock composition and product yield are free variables, the PSW model still gives analytic lot sizing equations. The ability of the proposed method to determine the optimal plant design is demonstrated through the example of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant. Based on the analytical optimality results, we propose a practical process optimality measure that can be used for any kind of process. This measure facilitates direct comparison of the performance of multiple processes, and hence is a useful tool for diagnosing the status of process systems. The result that the cost of a process is proportional to the square root of average flow rate is similar to the well-known six-tenths factor rule in plant design.

In order to sufficiently utilize the potential effectiveness of ATM networks, systematic and effective network management and control systems must be employed. In addition to network design, planning, and call routing techniques used in traditional circuit-switched networks. ATM networks can provide logical VP(Virtual Path) reconfiguration capabilities which can adapt to changes in the network environment. With a proper application of the VP reconfiguration technique, ATM networks can reduce the overhead of frequent network redesign and the overhead of call routing processing. However, ATM VP reconfiguration is a very complex and difficult problem which consists of many facets of optimization subproblems such as VP routing. VP sizing, VP terminating point location and VC routing. Most previous research on the ATM logical network reconfiguration problem dealt with the subset of the problem. This paper mathematically formulates the ATM network reconfiguration problem completely considering all subproblems. Since it is very difficult to derive the optimal solution of the formulated problem, we develop a heuristic method based on a Max min bandwidth allocation principle. We show the feasibility of the proposed heuristic method with a simple example.

The necessity for environment-friendly material development has emerged in the recent automotive field due to stricter regulations on fuel economy and environmental concerns. Accordingly, the automotive industry is paying attention to carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) material with high strength and stiffness properties while the lightweight. In this study, we determine a shape of lower control arm (LCA) for maximizing the strength and stiffness by optimizing the thickness of each layer when the stacking angle is fixed due to the CFRP manufacturing problems. Composite materials are laminated in the order of $0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $-45^{\circ}$ with a symmetrical structure. For the approximate optimal design, we apply a sequential two-point diagonal quadratic approximate optimization (STDQAO) and use a process integrated design optimization (PIDO) code for this purpose. Based on the physical properties calculated within a predetermined range of laminate thickness, we perform the FEM analysis and verify whether it satisfies the load and stiffness conditions or not. These processes are repeated for successive improved objective function. Optimized CFRP LCA has the equivalent stiffness and strength with light weight structure when compared to conventional aluminum design.
The electrical power system (EPS) of Korean satellites in low-earth-orbit is designed to achieve energy balance based on a one-orbit mission scenario. This means that the battery has to be fully charged at the end of a one-orbit mission. To provide the maximum solar array (SA) power generation, the peak power tracking (PPT) method has been developed for a spacecraft power system. The PPT is operated by a software algorithm, which tracks the peak power of the SA and ensures the battery is fully charged in one orbit. The EPS should be designed to avoid the stress of electronics in order to handle the main bus power from the SA power. This paper summarizes the results of energy balance to achieve optimal power sizing and the actual trend analysis of EPS performance in orbit. It describes the results of required power for the satellite operation in the worst power conditions at the end-of-life, the methods and input data used in the energy balance, and the case study of energy balance analyses for the normal operation in orbit. Both 10:35 AM and 10:50 AM crossing times are considered, so the power performance in each case is analyzed with the satellite roll maneuver according to the payload operation concept. In addition, the data transmission to the Korea Ground Station during eclipse is investigated at the local-time-ascending-node of 11:00 AM to assess the greatest battery depth-of-discharge in normal operation.

In the design of reinforced concrete framed structures, which consist of various design variables, the objective and the constraint functions are formulated in complicated forms. Usually iterative methods have been used to optimize the design variables. In this paper, multilevel formulation is adopted, and design variables are selected in reduced numbers at each level, to reduce the iterative cycle and to accelerate the convergence rate. At level 1, elastic analysis is performed to get the upper and lower bounds of the redistributed design moments due to inelastic behavior of the frame. Then the design moments are taken as design variables and optimized at level 2, and the sizing variables are optimized at level 3. The optimization of redistributed moments is performed using the design sensitivity obtained at the level 2, and force approximation technique is used to reflect the variation of design variables in the lower level to the upper level. The design variables are selected in reduced numbers at each level, and the optimization formulation is simplified effectively. A cost function is taken as the objective function, and the constraints of the stress of the structures are derived from BSI CP 110 following limit state theory. Numerical examples are included to prove the effectiveness of the developed algorithm.
