Surgical therapy of Sprengel deformity by Woodward procedure - A case report - (Woodward 술식을 이용한 Sprengel 변형의 수술적 치료 - 1예 보고 -)

  • Congenital undescended scapula is congenital structural abnormality which affects only one side usually. Scapula located higher than the usual and rotating deformity that inferior angle to medial side, superior angle to lateral side is common. This report presents one case of the surgical therapy of a sprengel deformity patient who passed an optimal operation period with age $3{\sim}7$years old, and includes brief review of the literature. 7 years old boy whose chief complaint was the limitation of left scapular-thoracic movement and he had an omovertebral bone bridge and periscapular muscle atrophy. There was improvement of motion ranges and cosmetic problems after surgical treatment.

Octopus fisheries in the coastal waters of Gangneung- II - Octopus drift-line fishery - (강릉시 연안 문어어업에 관한 연구- II - 문어흘림낚시어업 -)

  • A survey on the fishing gear for octopus drift-line fishing was done in Gangwon-do, Sacheon, Gyeongnam and Hokkaido, Japan, while a survey on the environments of fishing grounds used data from January to August from the Korea east coast farming forecast system of Donghae Fisheries Research and Development Institute. The present situation of fishing was examined with boats engaging in drift-line fishing from March to August in the coastal waters along Gangneung. The fishing tackle for octopus drift-line fishing was made manually, and the size, shape, and weight of the hook and number of shooting used vary according to the fishing time and region. Lead is used as the material for sinkers. As bait, pork fat with skin is mostly used in Gangwon-do. The temperature of the bottom water layer in the coastal fishing ground of Gangneung from April to June ranges from $3.2-12.4^{\circ}C$, which is the optimal temperature for octopuses. During July and August, the temperature ranges from $5.0-20.6^{\circ}C$. The maximum difference between day and night temperatures reached up to $9.2^{\circ}C$. Salinity is generally stable at $33.2-35.324.6%_{\circ}$, which does not affect the inhabitation of octopuses. The octopus catch reached its peak from May to July, while most octopuses weighed less than 1 kg (76.7%). The results show that it is effective to carry out octopus drift-line fishing up to a depth of 40 meters; and that the maximum number of octopuses per line is obtained with an operation time of six hours.

Fluid Dynamic Bearing Spindle Motors for DLP (DLP용 유체동압베어링 스핀들모터)

  • The small precision spindle motors in the high value-added products including the visible home appliances such as DLP projector require not only the energy conversion devices but also high efficiency, low vibration and sound operation. However, the spindle motors using the conventional ball bearing and sintered porous metal bearing have following problems, respectively: the vibration by the irregularity of balls and the short motor life cycle by the ball's abrasion and higher sound noises by dry contact between shaft and sleeve. In this paper, it is proposed that the spindle motor with a fluid dynamic bearing is suitable for the motor to drive the color wheel of the DLP(digital lightening processor) in the visible home appliances. The proposed spindle motor is composed of the fluid dynamic bearing with both the radial force and the thrust force. The fluid dynamic bearing is solved by the finite element analysis of the mechanical field with the Reynolds equations. The magnetic part of spindle motor, which is a type of Brushless DC Motor, is designed by the electro-magnetic field analysis coupled with the Maxwell equation. And the load capacity and the friction loss of fluid dynamic bearing are analyzed to bearing clearance variation by the fabrication error in designed motor. The design of the proposed motor is implemented by the load torque caused by the eccentricity and the unbalance of the fluid dynamic bearing when the motors are fabricated in error. The prototype of the motor with the fluid dynamic bearing is manufactured, and experiment results show the vibration, sound, and phase current at no load and color wheel load of the motors in comparison. The high performance characteristics with the low vibration, the low acoustic noise and the optimal mechanical structure are verified by the experimental results.

A Study of Rotor Fault Detection for the Induction Motor Using Axial Leakage Magnetic Flux (축방향 누설자속 측정에 의한 유도전동기의 회전자 결함검출에 관한 연구)

  • The second part of paper related rotor failure is to evaluate that the axial magnetic flux measurement could be used as a tool of the condition monitoring system for the induction motor and to develope the diagnostic algorithm for the various fault in the electric motors. The magnetic leakage flux signal is captured by the flux coil located at the end of motor without the disturbance of the operation. And the signal is analyzed both time and frequency domain to detect the failure of the motor. Specific signature can be described in tin and frequency domain for each fault of the motor. The experimental test found that the rotor failures - broken rotor bar, broken end ing and rotor eccentricity, could be detected from the spectrum with high resolution. The method of detecting the rotor fault was found by analysing the specific frequency and the sideband of the rotor bar pass frequency from axial leakage flux spectrum. In addition the optimal flux coil and measuring equipment for the axial leakage flux measurement was verified and the diagnostic method for the detection of the rotor related failure was developed.

Thyroid Tuberculosis (갑상선 결핵)

  • Objectives: Despite of high prevalence of tuberculosis in Korea, thyroid tuberculosis is very rare and only a few records are available. This study was carried out to evaluate the clinicopathologic characteristics of thyroid tuberculosis and to find out optimal therapeutic strategies for these lesions. Materials & Methods: From Jan. 1986 to July. 2000, of 5,493 patients who were underwent thyroidectomy, only 8(0.14%) had discovered to have thyroid tuberculosis. The medical records of them were analyzed retrospectively. Results: There were one man and seven women with a mean age of 40.3 years. Only one had tuberculosis sequalae on chest X-ray and two had past history of tuberculous lymphadenitis. However, none of them had symptomatic pulmonary tuberculosis. Most frequent symptom was palpable neck mass. The preoperative U/S, CT and FNAB failed to diagnose thyroid tuberculosis. The pathologic reports were chronic granulomatous thyroiditis with caseous necrosis in all the cases and AFB stain was positve in 5 cases. All cases were successfully treated by surgical resection and anti-Tbc. medications. Conclusions: The incidence of thyroid tuberculosis was extremely low and most of them have been presented as a palpable neck mass especially in relatively young-aged female patients. Although any diagnosis for thyroid tuberculosis prior to microscopical study of tissue removed at operation was not yielded, the preoperative diagnostic workups will be available with experience. Surgical resection and anti- Tbc medication would be the choice in the management of thyroid tuberculosis.

  • Recently, In the production line of batteries, charge and discharge tests are essential to verify battery characteristics. In this case, the battery charging uses a unidirectional AC/DC converter capable of output voltage and current control, and the discharge uses a resistive load. Since this method consumes energy during discharge, it must be replaced with a bi-directional AC/DC converter system capable of charging and discharging. Although it is difficult to replace the connected inverter part of the bi-directional AC/DC converter system due to the high cost, the spread of the solar-connected inverter rapidly increases as the current solar supply business is activated, and thereby the solar-connected type Inverter prices are plunging. If it can be used as a power converter for battery discharge without program modification of the solar-powered inverter, it will have competition. In this paper, propose a new battery discharge system using a combination of a photovoltaic DC/DC simulator and photovoltaic PCS using a battery to be used as a power converter for battery discharge without program modification of a low-cost photovoltaic inverter. In addition, propose an optimal solar characteristic curve for the stable operation of PCS. The validity of the proposed system was verified using a 500[W] class solar DC/DC simulator and a solar PCS prototype.

A Study on Preparation and Reactivity of Zinc Titanate Sorbents for H2S Removal (아연-티타늄 복합산화물 탈황제의 제조 및 반응특성 연구)

  • Zinc titanate sorbents for $H_2S$ removal were prepared and their reactivities were studied for high temperature desulfurization of coal gas. Sulfidation of zinc titanates by $H_2S$ sorption was conducted in a packed-bed tubular flow reactor at the temperature range of $550{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, and the results reveal that $650^{\circ}C$ was the optimal sulfidation temperature with respect to desulfurization efficiency and zinc loss. The structural change of sorbent particle was investigated by SEM analysis for the forbents sulfided at $650^{\circ}C$ and subsequently regenerated at $750^{\circ}C$. The stability of desulfurization capability as well as the mechanical stability of the zinc titanates was studied by means of the successive cycles of sulfidation-regeneration of sorbents, and the sorbent samples taken after the 10th cycle were characterized using BET, XRD, and SEM/EDX analyses. Zinc titanate sorbents exhibited nearly constant desulfurization capability in the successive cycle operation.

  • In this paper, we perform analysis of the performance of low-power communication technology, IEEE 802.15.4 MAC (Media Access Control) protocol used in internet of things. Wide variety of devices in internet of things generate different kinds of traffic characteristics and heterogeneous traffic environment is therefore considered in contrast to existing works. With the help of the Markov chain the performance of the protocol is derived as a function of the MAC parameters and based on the results a framework to determine energy-efficient optimal MAC parameters for applications in real time is proposed. Proposed method is shown to be more efficient in terms of energy consumption through performance comparison over application scenarios compared to operation with fixing MAC parameters, and its practicability on small devices with limited computing power is verified through evaluating the accuracy and speed of the proposed framework.

  • This paper analyzes the long-run effects of an environmental tax levied on motor vehicles. If the government charges their consumers the tax as much as the monetary value of the external damage due to the pollutants emitted from motor vehicles, the operation of vehicles is reduced to the socially optimal level, alike to ordinary Pigouvian taxes. Thus, air pollution abatement is realized in the short run. Moreover, in the long run, the tax leads the consumers to prefer cleaner vehicles owing to the tax burden, and so the firms produce the motor vehicles with less pollutants emitted to meet the change of demand. Therefore, the tax has the additional effect on air pollution abatement. This result is obtained from the simulation in the oligopoly model which has an interior solution when the vehicles are horizontally and vertically differentiated.

  • LPG has been a broad concern of pro-environmental alternative fuel for vehicles. Recently, the new Liquid Phase LPG Injection(LPLI) system extends the limit of power of LPG engine and gives a chance to substitute LPG engine for diesel engine of heavy duty vehicles that are the main resources of air pollution in urban area. Large bore size of heavy duty LPG engine derives a serious knock problem. To find an optimal MBT conditions, it is necessary to know how the flame develops in the combustion chamber and find where the knock positions are. In this study. the ion-probe head gasket was used to estimate the knock position. Inverse operation of the ion-probe signal provides the flame developing characteristics. The further the position is from the spark plug, the later the flame arrives and the more times knock occurs. The main factor that effects knock position is inferred a flor situation of mixed gas in the combustion chamber.
