  • An RFID systems employ efficient Anti-Collision Algorithms (ACAs) to enhance the performance in various applications. The EPC-Global G2 RFID system utilizes Frame Slotted Aloha (FSA) as its ACA. One of the common approaches used to maximize the system performance (tag identification efficiency) of FSA-based RFID systems involves finding the optimal value of the frame length relative to the contending population size of the RFID tags. Several analytical models for finding the optimal frame length have been developed; however, they are not perfectly optimized because they lack precise characterization for the timing details of the underlying ACA. In this paper, we investigate this promising direction by precisely characterizing the timing details of the EPC-Global G2 protocol and use it to derive a precise-optimal frame length model. The main objective of the model is to determine the optimal frame length value for the estimated number of tags that maximizes the performance of an RFID system. However, because precise estimation of the contending tags is difficult, we utilize a parametric-heuristic approach to maximize the system performance and propose two simple schemes based on the obtained optimal frame length-namely, Improved Dynamic-Frame Slotted Aloha (ID-FSA) and Exponential Random Partitioning-Frame Slotted Aloha (ERP-FSA). The ID-FSA scheme is based on the tag set estimation and frame size update mechanisms, whereas the ERP-FSA scheme adjusts the contending tag population in such a way that the applied frame size becomes optimal. The results of simulations conducted indicate that the ID-FSA scheme performs better than several well-known schemes in various conditions, while the ERP-FSA scheme performs well when the frame size is small.

  • This paper studies the influence of parameters of a novel SMA helical spring energy dissipation brace on the seismic resistance of a frame structure. The force-displacement relationship of the SMA springs is established mathematically based on a multilinear constitutive model of the SMA material. Four SMA helical springs are fabricated, and the force-displacement relationship curves of the SMA springs are obtained via tension tests. A numerical dynamic model of a two-floor frame with spring energy dissipation braces is constructed and evaluated via vibration table tests. Then, two spring parameters, namely, the ratio of the helical spring diameter to the wire diameter and the pre-stretch length, are selected to investigate their influences on the seismic responses of the frame structure. The simulation results demonstrate that the optimal ratio of the helical spring diameter to the wire diameter can be found to minimize the absolute acceleration and the relative displacement of the frame structure. Meanwhile, if the pre-stretch length is assigned a suitable value, excellent vibration reduction performance can be realized. Compared with the frame structure without braces, the frames with spring braces exhibit highly satisfactory seismic resistance performance under various earthquake waves. However, it is necessary to select an SMA spring with optimal parameters for realizing optimal vibration reduction performance.

  • We propose a new frame length control scheme for cognitive radio systems. In the proposed algorithm, the property that the probability of a primary packet arrival continually increases as time elapses during the primary user's idle period is utilized. When reducing the secondary frame length in accordance with the increasing primary packet arrival probability, spectrum sensing is conducted more frequently as time elapses and the primary packet arrival is detected more quickly. We obtain the optimal frame lengths by maximizing the secondary throughput while satisfying the interference constraint. Numerical results show a significant throughput enhancement via the frame length control.

  • This paper is concerned with the relationships between optimal number of wavelengths and tuning time in time division multiplexing(TDM) scheduling on wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) optical passive star networks. We assume that the traffic is nonuniform and each node has a tunable transmitter and a fixed receiver. Each node transmits spckets to all other nodes. Most of the earlier protocols on TDM based scheduling for WDM star networks [7, 8, etc.] use whold given wavelength chnnels. But in this paper, we investigate the optimal number of wavelengths that yidels minimum frame length when tuning time exists. It appears within the availble number of wavelengths that yields minimum frame length when tuning time exists. It appears within the available number of wavelengths. We analyze the relationships between optimal number of wavelengths and tuning time by experiments. We analyze the reationships between optimal number of wavelengths and tuning time by experiments. We also discuss on the possibility of reduction of frame length by increasing the number of nodes trans-mitters and receivers.

  • This study presents the effective stiffness-based optimal technique to control Quantitatively lateral drift for shear wall-frame structure system using sensitivity analysis. To this end, the element stiffness matrices are constituted to solve the compatibility problem of displacement degree of freedom between the frame and shear wall. Also, lateral drift constraint to introduce the approximation concept that can preserve the generality of the mathematical programming and can effectively solve the large scaled problems is established. And, the section property relationships for shear wall and frame members are considered in order to reduce the number of design variables and differentiate easily the stiffness matrices. Specifically, constant-shape assumption which is uniformly varying in size during optimal process is applied in frame structure. The thickness or length of shear wall can be changed depending on user's intent. Two types of 20 story shear wall-frame structure system are presented to illustrate the features of the stiffness-based optimal design technique.

  • An RFID system is an important technology that could replace the traditional bar code system changing the paradigm of manufacturing, distribution, and service industry. An RFID reader can recognize several hundred tags in one second. Tag identification is done by tags' random transmission of their IDs in a frame which is assigned by the reader at each round. To minimize tag identification time, optimal frame size should be selected according to the number of tags. This paper presents new query optimization methods in RFID systems. Query optimization consists of tag number estimation problem and frame length determination problem. We propose a simple yet efficient tag estimation method and calculate optimal frame lengths that minimize overall query time. We conducted rigorous performance studies. Performance results show that the new tag number estimation technique is more accurate than previous methods. We also observe that a simple greedy method is as efficient as the optimal method in minimizing the query time.

  • Most frame structures cannot be manufactured in a single-piece form. Ideally, when a structure is built up by assembling multi pieces, assembly at the joints should be rigidly performed enough to have almost full stiffness, which is difficult for practical reasons such as manufacturing cost and time. In this research, we aim to develop a manufacturability-oriented compliance-minimizing topology optimization using a ground beam model incorporating additional zero-length elastic joint elements. In the present formulation, design variables control the stiffness of zero-length elastic joints, not the stiffness of beams. Because joint stiffness values at the converged state can be utilized to select candidate assembly locations and their strengths, the technique is extremely useful to design multi-piece frame structures. An optimal layout is also extracted based on the stiffness values.

  • The pilot bit pattern of W-CDMA system is used for the channel estimation and frame synchronization confirmation. This paper proposes the binary sequences for the frame synchronization for wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) system. We present the circuit for the generation of ideal frame synchronization property using the binary sequences called frame synchronization word(FSW). W-CDMA system uses compressed mode where up to 7 slots per one 10 msec frame are not transmitted to make measurements from another frequency without a full dual receiver terminal. It is shown that the proposed frame synchronization words also maintain the optimal frame synchronization property in the compressed mode by using the complementary mapping relationship of preferred pair. And we discuss the realization circuit for the generation of frame synchronization words by using the concept of preferred pairs, complementary mapping relationship, and maximal length sequence.

  • The PS algorithm divides the tags within the identification range of reader into smaller groups by increasing the transmission power incrementally and identifies them. This algorithm uses the fixed frame size at every scan. Therefore, it has problems that the performance of PS algorithm can be variously shown according to the number of tags, frame size, and power level increase. In this paper, we propose an EPS algorithm that allocates the optimal frame size by estimating the number of tags at each scan.

  • We calculated the expected length of jumper wires on MDF(Main Distribution Frame) in case of random jumper assignment, and from the calculated results we considered an optimal method of terminal arrangement and terminal expansion for keeping the length of jumper wires short, where MDF is a large frame-work installed in a telephone office for accommodating the terminals which are used for connecting the outside facilities to the inside facilities of the telephone office. We also showed the jumper saving effect in modular frames.
