DYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SPINNING DISK VIBRATION INFLUENCED BY CENTRIFUGAL AIRFLOW (광자기 기록 장치에서의 디스크 진동과 회전 공기 유동 특성에 관한 연구)

  • A study on dynamic characteristics of rotating disks in magneto optical disk drives is presented. Natural frequencies of rotating disks are investigated experimentally and numerically. The frequency response and critical speeds of the ASMO disk are discussed. The characteristics of airflow around the disk and their effects on disk vibrations are also investigated. It is found that the numerical calculation of the natural frequencies of rotating disks agrees well with the experimental results. The airflow around the disk in the cartridge affects the characteristics of the disk vibrations to reduce the modal frequencies of the disk. The experiment shows that negative vertical offsets of the disk in the cartridge possibly increase the vibration amplitudes. As being influenced by the geometry of the cartridge, the rotation of the disk causes an asymmetric airflow in the presence of window.

  • Initial flame development and propagation were visualized under the new ignition system developed to estimate the effects of ignition characteristics on the engine performance in a port injection SI engine. Effects of intake air flow characteristics were also investigated by three different kinds of the swirl control valve. Experiments were performed in an optical single cylinder engine modified form a commercial engine. Flame images were captured through the quartz window mounted in the piston by the high speed video camera and analyzed to compare initial flame development. Results show that IMEP tends to rise slightly as the ignition duration gets longer. The direction of flame propagation is decisively governed by the in-cylinder flow motion. Every flame grows toward the exhaust valve forming a kind of turbulent flame. Initial flame propaagation characteristics are very similar to ones analyzed form pressure data.

  • This paper is the second of 3 companion papers which investigate axial stratification process. In-cylinder fuel behavior has been investigated in the port injected Sl engine by visualizing for the purpose of understanding stratification. Planar laser light sheet from an Nd:YAG laser has been illuminated through the transparent quartz cylinder of the single cylinder optical engine and the Mie scattered light has been captured through the quartz window in the piston head with an ICCD camera. Fuel has been replaced with an air-ethanol mixture to utilize atomized fuel spray fur the visualization purposes. This results have been compared with steady flow concentration measurement. For low/medium swirl port, the early injection makes such a fuel distribution state that is upper-rich, middle-lean and lower-rich along the combustion chamber and cylinder by tumbling motion. On the other hand, the late injection induces upper-rich, middle-lean and lower-rich state due to the short fuel penetration.

In high swirl port, the most fuel remains at combustion chamber and upper cylinder region without being affected by injection timing. The macro-distributed state is not changed but the difference of the amount of fuel around the spark plug varies according to injection timing, which determines LML.

  • We developed the experimental function (ERF) which can be used for the numerical curve fitting analysis in photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). We selected the core-levels of Ag 3d5/2 and Au 4f7/2 to obtain the ERF from the measured core-level spectra. For the numerical fourier transformation we applied the fast transform (FFT) algorithm. we considered optical (Wiener) filtering with the FFT due to noise and used Hann window function to remedy the information leakage in frequency domain due to discrete and finite sampling of measurement. The comparison of the curve fitting results using the ERF obtained in this work and the mathematical response function with a gaussian in the conventional approach shows clearly the improvement of the curve fitting analysis.

  • A test method that can measure the parallelism and the surface figure of an nontransparent plate using visible light is proposed. The testing system consists of a Twyman-Green interferometer. In addition, test results for the IR filter of IR MTF measuring system are described.

  • We developed an observation program for a 2K CCD camera, which was newly attached at the SOAO (Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory) 61cm telescope. The program was designed to control the telescope as well as the CCD camera and to monitor the CCD image quality, with very easy under the window-based graphical user interface (GUI). Furthermore, applying the automated differential photometric algorithm, we can obtain the instrumental magnitudes of several variable and comparison stars in real-time. Simultaneous photometry enables us to get precise differential magnitudes of variable stars even if the weather condition is not photometric. This new observation system has been using for many astronomical observations from September, 2001.

  • The combination of ultrasound echo images with digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) method has resulted in a two-dimensional, two-component velocity field measurement technique appropriate for opaque flow conditions including blood flow in clinical applications. Advanced PIV processing algorithms including an iterative scheme and window of offsetting were used to increase spatial resolution. The optimum concentration of the ultrasound contrast agent used for seeding was explored. Velocity validation tests in fully developed laminar pipe flow and pulsatile flow showed good agreement with both optical PIV measurements and the known analytic solution. These studies indicate that echo PIV is a promising technique for the non-invasive measurement of velocity profiles and shear stress.

  • The homo and hetero-junction diodes were fabricated using BP-Si structure. After removal of Si substrates, schottky diodes were fabricated on the BP bulk. The electrical properties of the diode were examined through current-voltage characteristics curve. The schottky diode with Sb electrode has a cut-in voltage of 0.33V. This value is almost equal to that of the typical schottky diodes. The breakdown voltage of the schottky diode is 30V. When BP was used for photo cell as a window, the conversion efficiency improved from 6.5% to 8.3%, and optical transmissivity of BP invreased in short wavelength region.

Visualization of Initial Flame Development in an SI Engine (스파크 점화 엔진에서 초기화염 발달의 가시화)

  • Initial flame development and propagation were visualized under different fuel injection timings to relate the initial flame development to the engine stability in a port injection SI engine. Experiments were performed in an optical single cylinder engine modified from a production engine and images were captured through the quartz window mounted in the piston by an intensified CCD camera. Stratification state was controlled by varying injection timing. Under each injection condition, the flame images were captured at the pre-set crank angles. These were averaged and processed to characterize the flame. The flame stability was estimated by the weighted average of flame area, luminosity, and standard deviation of flame area. Results show that stratification state according to injection timing did not affect on the direction of flame propagation. The flame development and the initial flame stability are strongly dependent on the stratified conditions and the initial flame stability governs the engine stability and lean misfire limit.
