  • We demonstrate parametric resonance in a magneto-optical trap. When we modulate the intensity of the cooling laser at about twice the resonant frequency of the trap, the atoms in the trap are divided into two parts and oscillate with 180 degree phase difference with the finite length due to nonlinearity of the trap potential. These are the effects of general nonlinear dynamics, called the Hopf bifurcation, or limit cycle motion. The amplitude and the phase of the oscillations are measured and compared with the theoretical calculations based on simple Doppler cooling theory. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the simulation results based on the simple Doppler cooling theory.

  • Optic tweezer is powerful tool to investigate biologic cells. Of eukaryotic cells, it was poorly documented regarding to optic trapping to manipulate yeasts. In preliminary experiment to explore yeast biology, interferometric optical tweezers was exploited to trap and manipulate budding yeasts. Successfully, several budding yeasts are trapped simultaneously. We found that the budding direction of the daughter cell was almost outward and the daughter cell surrounded by other yeasts grows slowly or fail to grow. Thus it was assumed that neighboring cells around budding yeast may be critical in budding and the growth of daughter cells. This is first report pertaining to the pattern of yeast budding under the optical trap when multiple yeasts were trapped.

  • A Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT) for $^{87}Rb$ atoms near the surface of a dielectric coated mirror at the top of a small $20{\times}25{\times}40\;mm^3$ cell has been observed. Two beams of $3.3\;mW/cm^2$ were used for optical cooling and an anti-Helmholtz magnetic field with a spatial gradient of 9.1 G/cm was used for magnetic trapping. The thickness of the mirror coated on a cover glass was less than $100{\mu}m$. The mirror covered the top of a cell and the atom-chip was located outside the vacuum in order to exploit the long life time of the mirror and easy operation of the chip. The trapping position was found 5 mm beneath the mirror surface. The number of trapped atoms was roughly $3{\times}10^7$ atoms and the temperature was approximately a few tens mK. In this paper, we describe the construction of the mirror-MOT in detail.

  • This paper presents the design of a multiple beam optical tweezers instrument used for manipulating micro/nano-sized components. The basic equations used in designing the optical tweezers are derived and the stable and time-sharing multiple beam optical tweezers are constructed with scanning mirrors. The laser beam passes through a series of optical components such as lenses, mirrors, and scanning mirrors, and overfills the entrance aperture of microscope objective, which gives a stable trap. By rotating the laser beam with the scanning mirror, the focal positions are translated in the specimen plane and multiple micro/nano-sized objects can be moved. The constructed optical tweezers is used to manipulate cells and liposomes simultaneously and to trap multiple nano-wires. The experiments prove that the developed optical tweezers can be a very versatile manipulation tool for studying gene therapy and nano device fabrication.

  • The strontium magneto optical trap followed by a Zeeman slower has been demonstrated. The isotope selective characteristics of the trap have been investigated. The fluorescence spectrum of the MOT was compared with those of other high resolution spectroscopic methods. The red detuned deflection beam is also considered for a more selective spectrum.

  • To improve the measurement accuracy of a solar-radiation observer instrument, aiming at the problem of multiorder-stray-light interference caused by the diffraction of the flat-field concave grating in the spectroscopic system, straylight suppression methods for different forms of optical traps are studied. According to the grating surface-scattering distribution-function model, the bidirectional scattering distribution function (BSDF) of a dust-polluted surface and the flat-field concave grating's transition area of the spectroscopic system is calculated, and a Lyot stop with blade baffle is designed to suppress this kind of stray light. For diffraction multiorder stray light, based on the theory of light-energy transmission, a design for precise positioning of the trench optical trap is proposed. The superiority of the method is verified through simulation and actual measurement. The simulation results show that in a spectroscopic system approximately 160 mm × 140 mm × 80 mm in size, the energy of the stray light is reduced by one order of magnitude by means of the trench optical trap and Lyot stop, and the number of beams is reduced from 5664 to 1040. The actual measurements show that the stray-light-suppression efficiency is about 69.4%, which is effective reduction of the amount of stray light.
