  • Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph(이하 FIMS)는 2002년에 발사 예정인 과학위성 1호의 주 탑재체이며, 은하 주변에 분포한 고온의 가스에서 방출되는 자외선 영역 (short wavelength band : 900-1150 $\AA$, long wavelength band : 1335-1750$\AA$)의 방출선을 약 2$\AA$의 분광 분해능으로 관측하는 천문학적 목표를 가지고 있다 일반적인 망원경을 사용하는 대신 제한된 위성의 크기 내에서, 넓은 지역에 퍼져 있는 가스의 분포와 특성을 관측하는데 적합하도록, 그림 1과 같이 비축 포물 원통 반사경과 타원형의 substrate를 가진 회절 에돌이발 (grating)의 사용을 고안하였다. Performance Test of NYSC 1m Telescope by Photometric Observation of M35

  • NYSC 1m telescope is completely assembled now, and equipped with FLI PL-16803 4k CCD and Shelyak eShel spectrograph (R~10,000) on optical system of f/8. From 12th Jan 2016, optical system alignment and test observations have been performed. We present the result of M35 photometric observation for the performance test of the 1m telescope. The photometric observation was carried out for the central part of M35 with the field of view, ${\sim}15^{\prime}.8{\times}15^{\prime}.8$. Standard transformation to the UBVI system was done by the photometric data of M35 in Sung and Bessell(1999).

Calibrating high-z QSO masses using near-IR and optical spectra

  • Using the newly commissioned Fiber-Multi-Object-Spectrograph at the Subaru telescope, we obtained near-IR spectra of a sample of 19 AGNs at 0.6 < z < 2.6, selected from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS) Bootes field, in order to calibrate high-z black hole mass (MBH) estimators. MBHs are generally determined through the kinematics of ionized gas clouds around the black hole assuming virial equilibrium. The velocity profiles of $H{\beta}/H{\alpha}$, MgII and CIV are used to infer the gas kinematics of low-z, mid-z, and high-z quasars, respectively. However, the MBH based on MgII and CIV is not very well calibrated. We compare the $H{\alpha}$ - based MBH estimates from the new FMOS near-IR spectra, with the MgII-based MBH estimates from our existing optical spectra, and investigate the systematic differences.

가시광선용 그리즘의 제작과 성능시험 (FABRICATION AND TEST OF AN OPTICAL GRISM)

  • An optical grism for education is fabricated and tested. It is composed of a transmission grating as dispersion element and a prism as diffraction angle compensation device. The transmission grating is Edmundoptics #49-584(spatial frequency 600 lines/mm, dimension $50mm{\times}50mm$). The prism is the fused silica type with angles ($41.3^{\circ}$, $-48.7^{\circ}$, $-90^{\circ}$). The grism device is fabricated by bonding the transmission grating and the prism with an optical adhesive. The zig for assembling the grism, telescope and camera is composed of an aluminum tube, an aluminum disk ring and a T-ring camera adaptor. The fabricated optical grism spectrograph is tested in laboratory using Halogen lamp and Neon lamp with DSLR camera. And the grism assembled with reflector telescope is tested in a field using stellar light. The results show good agreements with design parameters. The wavelength coverage range of the grism is 250 nm at the un-deviated wavelength of 506 nm. The wavelength resolution is 0.11 nm/pixel.

  • 원자외선 분광기 (Far ultraviolet IMaging Spectres.mph; FIMS)는 과학위성 1호의 주탑재체로 개발되고 있다. 원자외선 분광기 광학부에 대한 민감도 분석과 오차 예산 분석을 광범위하게 수행하였다. 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션을 통하여 제작 오차 및 조립 오차 등의 모든 오차가 함께 존재할 때 실제 원자외선 분광기가 갖게 되는 성능을 조사하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과 과학 임무를 위해 필요한 모든 요구 조건을 99.9% 이상의 확률로 만족하고 있음을 확인하였다.

NEAR-IR PHOTOMETRIC AND OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY OF THE FU ORIONIS OBJECT V582 AURIGAE

  • We carried out near-IR photometric and optical spectroscopic observations of V582 Aur, which is a FU Orionis type object, to investigate any periodic and/or aperiodic variations. We obtained light curves on the scale of a night and a year, in J, H and Ks bands with KASINICS (KASI Near Infrared Camera System) attached to the BOAO (Bohyun-san Optical Astronomy Observatory) 1.8-m reflector in Youngcheon, South Korea and examined photometric variations on the two time scales. So far we have not found any periodic brightness variations on the scale of a night. On the other hand, we have found that there seems to be a periodic brightness variation with a period of approximately 45 days. In addition, high-resolution optical spectroscopic observations of V582 Aur were performed from February 2013 to May 2014 with the high-resolution echelle spectrograph BOES attached to the BOAO 1.8-m reflector. We analyzed several spectral lines to understand the physical state of V582 Aur. The P Cyg profiles are clearly shown in the $H{\alpha}$ line and Na I D line.

공생별 Z And의 선윤곽 분석 (An Analysis of the Symbiotic Star Z And Line Profile)

  • 분해능이 ${\Delta}{\lambda}{\sim}-0.1{\AA}$인 고분산 분광기를 사용하여 공생별 Z Andromedae (And)의 분광자료를 연구하였다. 분광 관측은 (1) 2001년 8월 30일(위상 ${\Phi}$=0.77)과 2002년 8월 12일(위상 ${\Phi}$ =0.22)에 Lick 천문대의 Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph (HES)를 사용하여, 1800초와 3600초 노출의 고분산 자료를 얻었으며, (2) 2009년 10월 21일(위상 ${\Phi}$=0.70)에는 보현산 천문대의 Bohyunsan Echelle Spectrograph (BOES)를 사용하여 1200초 노출 시간의 고분산 자료를 얻었다. 약 $3600{\AA}-9500{\AA}$파장대의 HES와 BOES 관측 자료로 부터 HI, HeI, HeII에 대한 방출선을 선택하여 분석하였다. 이 선들의 선 윤곽 분석 작업을 통해 2개 또는 3개로 분리시키고, 위상별로 각 성분이 어떤 지역에서 형성되고, 백색왜성과 적색거성의 궤도 운동과 어떠한 관련이 있는지를 조사하였다. 라만 산란(Raman scattering)된 $H{\alpha}$선 선폭 및 HI, HeI, HeII의 위상별 변화를 보이는 방출선의 특성으로부터, 방출선들은 백색왜성 주위를 감싸는 강착원반과 이 원반 안의 두 라그랑지안(Lagrangian) 포인트 $L_1$$L_2$지역에서 주로 생성된 것으로 결론지었다. Z And는 활동성이 2009년과 2001년에 가장 활발했고, 2002년의 선 윤곽은 매우 복잡한 양상을 보임에도 불구하고, 활동성은 비교적 조용하였음을 암시하고 있다.

  • 과학위성 1호 원자외선 분광기(FIMS)는 인공위성 발사 및 궤도 운영시 경험하는 환경하에서 기계구조적인 안정성과 광학적 성능의 저하를 최소화하도록 설계되어야 한다. 이를 위하여 원자외선 분광기의 광학 성능과 직접적으로 관련되어 있는 회절격자 및 최절격자 마운트의 구조 및 열변형에 대한 유한요소해석을 수행하였다. 회절격자 마운트의 고유진동수를 100 Hz 이상 유지하면서 발사시 겪게되는 준 정적 하중에 의한 응력이 회절격자에 직접 전달되지 않고 회절격자 마운트에 의해 상쇄될 수 있도록 하였다. 또한, 온도 변화에 의한 회절격자에 미치는 영향을 계산하기 위하여 시간변화에 따른 분석 및 정적 해석을 수행하였으며, 회절격자 마운트에 의하여 회절격자에 작용하는 열적 변형 및 응력을 충분히 감쇄시킬 수 있음을 확인하였다. 온도 변화에 의한 광학 성능의 변화는 허용오차 범위내에 있음을 알 수 있었다.

THE RED COLOR OF MARS FROM OPTICAL SPECTRA

  • Colors have been derived from the observed optical spectrum of Mars and Jupiter. It is known that the planets and the Moon emit reflected sunlight and thus their spectra are similar to the spectrum of solar radiation. The question was then why is the color of Mars different from that of other planets, i.e. red, although it would share the same spectrum of reflected sunlight. Can one derive color from the spectrum? Therefore, we observed the optical spectra of the scattered sunlight in day time for the Moon and Mars using a 1-D array spectrograph on the 12-inch reflecting telescope in the Korea Science Academy of KAIST in Busan, Korea. We adopted the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) in 1931 of three spectral sensitivity peaks for the human eye in short, medium and long wavelengths in visible light. The observed spectra were imposed on CIE sensitivities and the color detected by the human eye was derived. The Mars spectrum represents red color and the Moon white. It is a similar color to that which a human would see. This result means that color is easily derived from astronomical spectra. The appearance of the planets surface can be determined for Mars, which is the result of iron oxide.

  • The Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrometer (IGRINS) is the first astronomical spectrograph that uses a silicon immersion grating as its dispersive element. IGRINS fully covers the H and K band atmospheric transmission windows in a single exposure. It is a compact high-resolution cross-dispersion spectrometer whose resolving power R is 40,000. An individual volume phase holographic grating serves as a secondary dispersing element for each of the H and K spectrograph arms. On the 2.7m Harlan J. Smith telescope at the McDonald Observatory, the slit size is $1^{{\prime}{\prime}}{\times}15^{{\prime}{\prime}}$. IGRINS has a plate scale of 0.27" pixel-1 on a $2048{\times}2048$ pixel Teledyne Scientific & Imaging HAWAII-2RG detector with a SIDECAR ASIC cryogenic controller. The instrument includes four subsystems; a calibration unit, an input relay optics module, a slit-viewing camera, and nearly identical H and K spectrograph modules. The use of a silicon immersion grating and a compact white pupil design allows the spectrograph collimated beam size to be 25mm, which permits the entire cryogenic system to be contained in a moderately sized ($0.96m{\times}0.6m{\times}0.38m$) rectangular Dewar. The fabrication and assembly of the optical and mechanical components were completed in 2013. From January to July of this year, we completed the system optical alignment and carried out commissioning observations on three runs to improve the efficiency of the instrument software and hardware. We describe the major design characteristics of the instrument including the system requirements and the technical strategy to meet them. We also present the instrumental performance test results derived from the commissioning runs at the McDonald Observatory.
