색변조 기술을 이용한 레이저 가공 공정 모니터링 시스템 (Monitoring system of laser materials processing using chromatic modulation technique)

  • A development of in-process and reliable monitoring system in laser materials processing is essential for successful applications toward the real industrial fields. It was known that optical signals induced by laser-matter interactions provide a good indication not only to monitor various defects but also to characterize and identify the process However there are still difficulties to implement the optical monitoring system in real fields since the system is susceptible to the spurious change of the signal affected by the variation of experimental conditions and environmental noises. In this article. a new type of optical monitoring technique named 'chromatic modulation technique' is described as a reliable, robust and sensitive monitor for the applications in laser materials processing in order to tackle the conventional problems in optical system.

Novel graphene-based optical MEMS accelerometer dependent on intensity modulation

  • This paper proposes a novel graphene-based optical microelectromechanical systems MEMS accelerometer that is dependent on the intensity modulation and optical properties of graphene. The designed sensing system includes a multilayer graphene finger, a laser diode (LD) light source, a photodiode, and integrated optical waveguides. The proposed accelerometer provides several advantages, such as negligible cross-axis sensitivity, appropriate linearity behavior in the operation range, a relatively broad measurement range, and a significantly wider bandwidth when compared with other important contributions in the literature. Furthermore, the functional characteristics of the proposed device are designed analytically, and are then confirmed using numerical methods. Based on the simulation results, the functional characteristics are as follows: a mechanical sensitivity of 1,019 nm/g, an optical sensitivity of 145.7 %/g, a resonance frequency of 15,553 Hz, a bandwidth of 7 kHz, and a measurement range of ${\pm}10g$. Owing to the obtained functional characteristics, the proposed device is suitable for several applications in which high sensitivity and wide bandwidth are required simultaneously.

계층간 교차 개념을 적용한 광 부호분할 다중접속 시스템의 성능 분석 (Performance Analysis of Optical CDMA System with Cross-Layer Concept)

  • 본 논문에서는 계층간 교차 (Cross-Layer) 개념을 적용하여 터보 (Turbo) 부호화된 광 (Optical) 부호분할 다중접속 (CDMA : Code Division Multiple Access) 시스템의 네트워크 성능을 분석하고 실험하였다. 계층간 교차 개념은 물리 (Physical) 계층과 매체접근제어 (MAC : Medium Access Control) 계층을 고려하였다. 시스템은 펄스위치변조 (PPM : Pulse Position Modulation)를 적용한 강도변조/직접검파 (IM/DD : Intensity Modulation/Direct Detection) 방식의 광 시스템을 고려하였다. 그리고 시스템의 성능을 향상시키기 위해 병렬 연접된 길쌈부호 (PCCC : Parallel Concatenated Convolutional Code)로 이루어진 터보 부호를 사용하였다. 네트워크의 성능은 비트오류확률 (BEP : Bit Error Probabiliy) 측면에서 분석되었다. 모의실험 결과, 터보 부호는 적당한 부호화 및 복호화 복잡도에서 상당한 부호화 이득을 제공하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 일정한 부호화율 (Code Rate)에서 인터리버 길이와 복호과정에서의 반복 복호 횟수를 증가시킬수록 시스템 성능이 향상되는 것을 확인하였다.

Fixed bias를 가지는 4-D Multiple-Subcarrier 신호를 이용한 Optical Wireless 통신의 평균 전력 절감에 관한 연구 (Fixed Biased 4-D Multiple-Subcarrier Signal for Average Power Reduction in Optical Wireless Communication)

  • 기존의 Multiple-Subcarrier변조 방식에 4-차원(4-D)신호를 이용한 Optical Wireless통신 방식을 제안하였다. 4-D 신호는 신호파형 최적화 기술 (OSW, Optimization Technique of Signal Waveforms)을 이용하여 유도하고 Multiple-Subcarricr의 block coder에 적용함으로써 출력 신호점 간의 Euclidean distance를 최대화하였다. 그 결과 고정 dc 바이어스를 부가한 상태에서 시스템에서 요구되는 Normalized power를 QPSK에 비해 3 dB, Reserved Subcarrier 나 Minimum Power에 비해 최대 3.3 dB 를 각각 절감하였고 normalized bandwidth 1.125 ∼ 1.25의 범위에서 QPSK에 비해 평균 3 dB, Res. Subcarrier 방식에 비해 2 ∼ 4 dB, Min. Power 방식에 비해 0 ∼ 3 dB를 각각 절감하였다.

교란대기 지상 광무선 통신에서 변조방식에 따른 패킷 오류율 비교 (Packet Error Rate comparsion of Different Modulation Formats over Terrestrial Optical Wireless Communication in Turbulent Atmosphere)

  • 지상 광무선 통신에서 대기의 교란 및 대기 입자에 의한 광의 감쇄가 있을 때, 대기교란의 강도 및 가시도가 수신 광 강도에 미치는 영향을 해석하였다. 광신호는 On-Off Keying(OOK), Pulse Position Modulation(PPM) 및 Digital Pulse Interval Modulation(DPIM)의 방식으로 변조하였다. 교란대기 하에서 각 변조방식에 대해 광 전송 거리에 따른 광수신 전력을 계산하고 이를 이용하여 전송거리에 따른 패킷 오류율(packet error rate: PER)을 계산하였다. 광신호를 전송하기 위한 광원의 파장은 850nm, 1310nm 및 1550nm을 선택하였다. 대기는 약 교란 상태로 가정하여 대기 굴절률 구조상수 $Cn2{\approx}10-14m-2/3$, 대기의 가시도 V=2km로 하였다. 약교란 대기 상태에서 세가지 변조방식 중 DPIM 방식이 우수하며, 광 신호의 전송을 위한 파장으로는 1550nm가 PER 성능이 우수함을 알 수 있었다.

Comparison of PCCC and SCCC for an Optical CDMA System

  • In this paper, performance of an optical CDMA system with PCCC and SCCC is simulated and compared. It is assumed that optical channel is an intensity modulated (IM) channel and direct-detection scheme is employed to detect the received optical signal. The modulation scheme used is pulse-position-modulation (PPM). The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability. From the simulation results, it is shown that turbo coding offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding/decoding complexity.

  • A 10Mbps optical wireless link using LED array has been demonstrated. The modulation bandwidth of the LED has been measured, and the transmission test according to modulation frequency has been also carried out. The good communication performance has been obtained at about 30cm distance at 10Mbps data rate.

Peak-to-zero modulation of optical absorption via electrically controllable quantum interference

  • We propose a modulation scheme of optical absorption in a coupled asymmetric quantum well (QW) structure via electrically controllable quantum interference. It is based on the parallel-perpendicular energy coupling effect. We show that by applying an external electric Held in the parallel direction (to the QW layers), we can obtain a maximum (peak-type) absorption at a specific wavelength where absorption cancellation would occur due to electrically induced transparency without such an external Held .

Multi-coded Variable PPM for High Data Rate Visible Light Communications

  • In this paper, we propose a new modulation scheme called multi-coded variable pulse position modulation (MC-VPPM) for visible light communication systems. Two groups of signals (Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) groups) are multi-coded by orthogonal codes for transmitting data simultaneously. Then, each multi-level value of the multi-coded signal is converted to pulse width and position which results in not only an improved data rate, but also a processing gain in reception. In addition, we introduce average duty ratio and cyclic shift concepts in PWM through which dimming control for light illumination can be supported without any degradation in communication performance. Through simulation, we confirm that the proposed MC-VPPM shows a comparable BER curve and much greater achievable data rate than the conventional VPPM scheme using a visible light optical channel environment.

Analysis of Optical Properties with Photopolymers for Holographic Application

  • Optical transparency and high diffraction efficiency are two essential factors for high performance of the photopolymer. Optical transparency mainly depends on the miscibility between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer, while diffraction efficiency depends on the refractive index modulation between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer. For most of organic materials, the large refractive index difference between two polymers accompanies large structural difference that leads to the poor miscibility and thus poor optical quality via light scattering. Therefore, it is difficult to design a high-performance photopolymer satisfying both requirements. In this work, first, we prepared a new phase-stable photopolymer (PMMA) with large refractive index modulation and investigated the optical properties. Our photopolymer is based on modified poly (methyl methacrylate) as a polymer binder, acryl amide as a photopolymerizable monomer, triethanolamine as initiator, and yellow eosin as a photosensitizer at 532 nm. Diffraction efficiency over 85% and optical transmittance over 90% were obtained for the photopolymer. Second, Organic-inorganic nanocomposite films were prepared by dispersing an aromatic methacrylic monomer and a photo- initiator in organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel matrices. The film properties could be controlled by optimizing the content of an organically modified silica precursor (TSPEG) in the sol-gel matrices. The photopolymer film modified with the organic chain (TSPEG) showed high diffraction efficiency (> 90%) under an optimized condition. High diffraction efficiency could be ascribed to the fast diffusion and efficient polymerization of monomers under interference light to generate refractive index modulation. The TSPEG modified photopolymer film could be successfully used for holographic memory.
