  • Austomated visual inspection(AVI) capability has become an important key component in the automated manufacturing system. In such a visual inspection system an intensity(or color) image of a scene is quickly affected by optical property of objects, condition and roughness of surface, lens and filters, image sensor property and lighting system. In particular, the lighting system disign is the most important factor, since it affects overall performance of the visual system. For fast and cheap automated visual inspection system it is important to obtain the good image quality which results from careful attention to the design of the lighting system. In this paper, the lighting subsystem of AVI system is analysed for the inspection of printed circuit board(PCB) patterns. The spectral reflectance of materials, which are composed of PCB, is measured for choosing the light source. The reflection property is theoretically obtained by a reflection model and also obtained by experiments which measure intensity with varying the viewing direction of image sensor and the lighting direction of illuminator. The illumination uniformity of a ring-type illuminator. The lighting system is designed based upon the experimental results and theoretial analysis.

  • With the aim of developing a smartphone-based point-of-care device that is small, inexpensive, and easy to handle by non-expert, we designed a fluorescence smartscope for counting particles and a DC motor-controlled particle positioning system. Our smartscope can count the number of fluorescent particles and fluorescently-stained white blood cells through a phone camera with an adaptor containing a LED, a ball lens and optical filters and an application running on a smartphone. The motor was controlled wirelessly via Bluetooth with an Android smartphone. We found that axial spinning of a helical microfluidic channel allows arrangement of particles having size similar to the white blood cells. The motor-controlled particle positioning system can minimize time-consuming manual processes and automate sample preparation process and thus, if integrated with the smartscope, it can be used for a point-of-care testing device based on a smartphone.

  • The electro-wetting effect can be implemented as a fast means to move liquid interfaces. A continuous and numerical method would be required in measurement of electro-wetting liquid interfaces. We propose an /in-situ/ measurement method to characterize the dynamic change in curvature of liquid interfaces. In the proposed method, variation of light intensity transmitted through the liquid interfaces is measured, leading to numerical determination of the liquid curvatures. Experimental results obtained from our efficient method are confirmed by the direct images of a streak camera.

  • Femtosecond laser patterning of ITO on a touch screen panel with a shaped fs laser beam was investigated. A quasi flat-top beam was formed using a variable mask and a planoconvex lens. The spatial profile of the original Gaussian beam and the shaped beam were monitored by a CCD beam profiler. The laser patterned ITO film was examined using an optical microscope, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). It turned out that the quality of the ITO pattern fabricated by a shaped beam is superior to that of the pattern without beam shaping in terms of debris generation, height of the craters, and homogeneity of the bottom. Optimum processing window was determined at the laser irradiance exhibiting 100% removal of Sn. The removal rate of In was measured to be 83%.

  • Fine microgroove is the key component to fabricate micro-grating, micro-grating lens and so on. Conventional groove fabrication methods such as etching and lithography have some problems in efficiency and surface integrity. This study deals with the creation of ultra-precision micro grooves using non-rotational diamond tool and CNC machining center. The shaping type machining method proposed in the study allows to produce V-shaped grooves of $40\mu{m}$ in depth with enough dimensional accuracy and surface. For the analysis of machining characteristics in micro V-grooving, three components of cutting forces and AE signal are measured and processed. Experimental results showed that large amplitude of cutting forces and AE appeared at the beginning of every cutting path, and cutting forces had a linear relation with the cross-sectional area of uncut chip thickness. From the results of this study, proposed micro V-grooving technique could be successfully applied to forming the precise optical parts like prism patterns on light guide panel of TFT-LCD.

  • In modern industry, the accuracy and the sulfate-finish requirements for machined parts have been becoming ever more stringent. In addition, the measurement and understanding of surface topography is rapidly attracting the attention of the physicist and chemist as well as the engineer. Optical measuring method is used in vibration measurement, crack and defect detection with the advent of opto-mechatronics, and it is expected to play an important role in surface topography. In this study, the principle of confocal microscope is described, and the advanced 3-D surface measuring system that has better performance than the traditional confocal microscope is developed. Suitable fixtures arc developed and integrated with the computer system for generating 3-D surface and form data. • A wide variety of unsaturated vinyl derivatives can be induced to undergo free-radical chain polymerization. The capability to carry out a thermodynamically feasible polymerization relies on its kinetic feasibility on whether the proceeds at a reasonable rate under a given set of reaction conditions. Initiator or promoter is often required to achieve the kinetic feasibility. Only a few unsaturated monomers including methyl methacrylate(MMA) are known to absorb light between 250 and 500 nm which is the most convenient wavelength range. Also, the polysilanes with unusual optical and electronic properties have been used as ceramic precursors, deep UV photoresists, photoconductors. The hydrosilation has been used to make many interesting types of silicon containing polymers such as copolymer, dendrimers. Bulk polymerization of monomers with different molar radio of hydrosilanes(9:1 through 1:9) were performed. A quartz test tube charged with monomer and hydrosilane was degassed and irradiated with 250 nm UV for 6 hours. The polymer was taken in toluene, precipitated in hexane, filtered off, and dried. It was found that the initiators appeared to competitively and concurrently function as both chain initiation and transfer agents in the polymerization of vinyl monomers.

  • The need for rapid and accurate measurement of 3-dimensional objects is increasing due to the paradigmatic shift in manufacturing from mass production to small batch production. A three dimensional measurement technique which can provide the dimensional information of the object manufactured or to be manufactured has been developed. This method is based on phase shifting moire topology. Digital-Micromirror-Device (DMD) has been used in generating phase shifting moire fringes. And the mechanically moving optical components used for phase shifting, which might result in measurement errors, have been replaced by the DMD. Inherent $2\pi$-ambiguity problem, occurring in the calculation of phase from the light intensity distribution due to the nature of arctangent function, has been overcome by adapting the phase unwrapping method. The advantage of this technique is the easy change of the range and the resolution of the measurement by simply changing the computer generated grid pattern with the appropriate combination of projection lens of various focal length.

  • Nitride films such as TiN, CrN etc. deposited on glass by PVD processes have been developed for many industrial applications. These nitride films deposited on glass were widely used for not only decorative and optical coatings but also wear and corrosion resistance coatings employed as dies and molds made of glass for the example of lens forming molds. However, the major problem of nitride coatings on glass by PVD process is non-uniform film owing to pin-hole and micro crack. It is estimated that nonuniform coating is influenced by a different surface energy between metal nitrides and glass due to binding states. In this work, therefore, for the evaluation of nucleation and growth mechanism of nitride films on glass TiN and CrN film were synthesized on glass with various nitrogen partial pressure by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. Prior to deposition, for the examination of relationship between surface energy and film microstructure plasma pre-treatment process was carried out with various argon to hydrogen flow rate and substrate bias voltage, duty cycle and frequency by using pulsed DC power supply. Surface energy owing to the different plasma pre-treatment was calculated by the measurement of wetting angle and surface conditions of glass were investigated by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS) and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM). The microstructure change of nitride films on glass with increase of film thickness were analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM).
