  • The spatial coherence function of multy-mode beam was measured by using a Sagnac interferometer and self referencing technique. For leaner polarization laser beam passing through a multy-mode fiber, its change value of spatial mode and polarization from stress of faber and input coupling angle. And each spatial mode have each polarizations, when we simulation Wigner distribution function and Spatial Correlation function of spatial multi-mode beam by using Hermit Gaussian modes leaner sum. We measured spatial coherence function of using by multy-mode fiber. One can use this measurement method to study and characterize the property of multy-mode light field coming out of GRIN multy-mode fiber.

  • We present a 3-D profiler specially devised for the profile measurement of rough surfaces that are difficult to be measured with conventional non-contact interferometer. The profiler comprises multiple two-point-diffraction sources made of single-mode optical fibers. Test measurement proves that the proposed profiler is well suited for the warpage inspection of microelectronics components with rough surface, such as unpolished backsides of silicon wafers and plastic molds of integrated-circuit chip package.

  • In this article, a smart multifunctional optical system-on-a-chip (SOC) sensor platform is presented and its application for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor interrogation in optical sensor networks is investigated. The smart SOC sensor platform consists of a superluminescent diode as a broadband source, a tunable microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based Fabry-P$\acute{e}$rot filter, photodetectors, and an integrated microcontroller for data acquisition, processing, and communication. Integrated with a wireless sensor network (WSN) module in a compact package, a smart optical sensor node is developed. The smart multifunctional sensor platform has the capability of interrogating different types of optical fiber sensors, including Fabry-P$\acute{e}$rot sensors and Bragg grating sensors. As a case study, the smart optical sensor platform is demonstrated to interrogate multiplexed FBG strain sensors. A time domain signal processing method is used to obtain the Bragg wavelength shift of two FBG strain sensors through sweeping the MEMS tunable Fabry-P$\acute{e}$rot filter. A tuning range of 46 nm and a tuning speed of 10 Hz are achieved. The smart optical sensor platform will open doors to many applications that require high performance optical WSNs.

  • We have investigated the impact of optical filter bandwidth on the performance of all-optical automatic gain-controlled (AGC) erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). In principle, an optical bandpass filter (OBPF) should be placed within the feedback gain-clamping loop to set the lasing wavelength as well as the passband of the feedback amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in all-optical AGC EDFA. From our measurement results, we found that the power level of feedback ASE with 0.1 nm passband of the optical filter was smaller than the ones with >0.2 nm passband cases. Therefore, the peak-to-peak power variation of the surviving channel with 0.1 nm passband was much larger than the ones with >0.2 nm passband. In addition, no significant difference in the power level of the feedback ASE was observed when the passband of the optical filter was ranging from 0.2 nm to 4.5 nm in our measurements. From these results, we have concluded that the passband of the optical filter should be slightly larger than 0.2 nm by taking into account the effect of feedback ASE power and the efficient use of the EDFA gain spectrum for the lasing ASE peak.

  • Since more than two decades, the conventional PD detecting systems have been employed in order to detect the partial discharges occurring inside the HV power apparatus for their diagnosis by use of different type of detection such as acoustic and UHF detection method. Regardless of their wide on-site application, a certain number of technical inconveniences have been disclosed as follows : multistage amplification. large volume, susceptible to external noise and high price. In this respect, the optical measurement techniques are widely proposed in these days in this concerned field ascribed to the following advantages : immune to external EMI noise and broad band response of the Pockels cell covering from DC to GHz. However, the reliability of several proposed techniques enabling to measure the electric field inside the large high power apparatus has not yet been well approved In this work, an optical measuring system, based on the Pockels effect, has been developed for measuring the field variation due to the corona discharges occurring in air and in oil. This system consists of He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, multi mode optical fiber, polarizing film, Y-cut LiNbO3 cell, photo detector, digital oscilloscope and personal computer with GPIB. For this purpose, optical probe has been specially designed and realized and put into the needle-plane electrode. Afterward, same measurement is carried out in oil. We demonstrate the characteristic of the optical measuring system and the measurement results.

  • Non-destructive testing methods for composite materials (e.g., carbon fiber-reinforced and glass fiber-reinforced plastic) have been widely used to detect damage in the overall industry. This study detects defects using optical infrared thermography. The transient heat transport in a solid body is characterized by two dynamic quantities, namely, thermal diffusivity and thermal effusivity. The first quantity describes the speed with thermal energy diffuses through a material, whereas the second one represents a type of thermal inertia. The defect detection rate is increased by utilizing a lock-in method and performing a comparison of the defect detection rates. The comparison is conducted by dividing the irradiation method into reflection and transmission methods and the irradiation time into 50 mHz and 100 mHz. The experimental results show that detecting defects at 50 mHz is easy using the transmission method. This result implies that low-frequency thermal waves penetrate a material deeper than the high-frequency waves.

  • The response of a single-mode fiber to a sinusoidally modulated input has been studied to see its utility in measuring system performance in the presence of fiber nonlinearities. The sinusoidally modulated signal models an alternating bit sequence of ones and zeros in on-off keying. The sinusoidal response of normally dispersive fiber shows a strong correlation with eye-opening penalty (EOP) over a wide range of the nonlinearity parameter N (0.1 < N$^2$< 100). This result implies that the measurement of the sinusoidal response can be an alternate way of measuring EOP without having a long sequence of randomly modulated input bits. But in the anomalous dispersion region, the sinusoidal response has a much more limited range of application to estimate system performance.

  • Longitudinal strains({$varepsilon}_x$) of the core and skin layers in glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) cross-ply composite laminates have been studied using the embedded optical fiber sensor of totally-reflected extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer(TR-EFPI). Foil-type strain gauges bonded on both the upper and lower surfaces were used for the measurement of the surface strains. Both TR-EFPI sensor and strain gauge bonded on the specimen surface showed excellent agreement within -0.0086 ~ +0.0302% strain. It was shown that values of {$varepsilon}_x$ in the interior of the surface layer and the core layer measured by embedded TR-EFPI sensor was significantly higher than that of the specimen surface measured by strain gauges. The experimental results were ascertained with finite element analysis. Embedded TR-EFPI optical fiber sensor could measure accurately the internal strains which were different from the surface.

  • Brillouin scattering-based fiber optic sensors are useful to measure strain or temperature in a distributed manner. Since the Brillouin frequency of an optical fiber depends on both the strain and temperature, it is very important to know whether the Brillouin frequency shift is caused by the strain change or temperature change. This article presents a temperature compensation technique of a Brillouin scattering-based fiber optic strain sensor. Both the changes of the Brillouin frequency and the Brillouin gain power is observed for the temperature compensation using a BOTDA sensor system. Experimental results showed that the temperature compensated strain values were highly consistent with actual strain values.

  • This paper is to investigate the influence of the endface quality on the loss characteristics of a plastic optical fiber(POF) connector and the stability of new designed sleeve for in-car network service. Using the parameters of the surface roughness and applied load, insertion loss of connector is measured. Endface condition for optimizing the connection is presented by the surface roughness satisfying loss criteria and the stress for minimizing the loss, $R_{rms}=8nm$ and 19 MPa, respectively. By vibration test and dynamic loss measurement, we show the stability of the new designed sleeve.
