  • As the optical communication is introduced to the backbone network at first and becomes a general communication method of network, the demand of kernel parts of optical communication such as PLC(Planar Light Circuit), Coupler, and WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) element increases. The alignment and the attachment technology are very important in the fabrication of optical elements. In this paper, the driving mechanism of ultra precision stage is studied with the aim of optimal design of stage. The travel and the resolution of stage are investigated. The hysteresis of the stage is generated because of PZT actuator. The hysteresis and the inverse hysteresis are modeled in X, Y, and Z-axis motion. The input data of desired displacement to the stage according to input voltage is obtained from the inverse hysteresis equation. In the result of experiments with the input data, the errors due to hysteresis are well compensated.

  • In order to efficiently control the heat generation of electronic devices, many research has been conducted on thermally conductive composite materials. In this study, milled carbon fiber was dispersed in four solvent to investigate the relationship of carbon fiber alignment according to dispersion by solvents, and carbon fiberreinforced composite material(CFRP) was manufactured using vacuum filtration. To evaluate the arrangement of CFRP the arrangement of the prepared specimen was observed under an optical microscope, and thermal conductivity was measured by Laser Flash Analysis. The Through-plane thermal conductivity of CFRP using NMP and Ethanol was 10.79 W/mK and 10.57 W/mK respectively, which were improved by 218% and 209% compared to the In-plane thermal conductivity. The high viscosity of the solvent greatly affects the shear of the fluid, and it seemed to determine the alignment of the filler.

  • Photoresponsive side chain copolymer and homopolymer containing an aminonitroazobenzene were synthesized for studying photoisomerization behavior and photo-induced anisotropy. Trans-to-cis photoisomerization was observed under the exposure of a circularly polarized visible light with UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. Reorientation of polar azobenzene molecules induced optical anisotropy under a linearly polarized light at 532nm. Polarized absorption spectroscopy was employed to investigate the anisotropy of the polymer film during irradiationg of the excitation light. Layers of two photosensitive polymers were used for aligning liquid crystal(LC) molecules instead of one of the rubbed polyimide layers in the conventional twisted nematic cell. For producing homogeneous alignment of a nematic LC molecule, a linearly polarized light was exposed to the films of two polymers. The stability of the LC alignment upon the linearly polarized light exposure was also studied.

  • To increase the tolerance for passive fiber alignment, a single mode polymer waveguide with a large core structure is demonstrated. The large core waveguide is designed to have a mode profile comparable to that of a thermally expanded core (TEC) fiber, and it can be connected to a high-contrast waveguide through an adiabatic transition taper structure. From a waveguide with a rectangular core of 25 ${\times}$ 25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$, a single mode propagation is observed when the index contrast is as low as 0.0005. A UV-cured injection molding method is used to fabricate the thick core structure. Due to the large mode size, the insertion loss of the device is below 0.5 dB until the lateral displacement of the TEC fiber is 4.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The low insertion loss is important for reproducible passive alignment.

  • Recently, high speed transmission and large information demand have been increased. Also, researches of integrated optical device for large production and high-efficient planar lightwave circuit (PLC) have been increased. In this paper, integrated optical alignment is proposed which makes passive alignment between optical device and optical fiber possible. The integrated optical device consists of splitter structures which have one input and two outputs. The proposed integrated structure was fabricated by roll-to-roll (RTR) processing method. This method enables to manufacture continuously and the processing time can be shortened. Optical property of the fabricated optical device showed 3.9 dB insertion loss and 0.2 dB optical uniformity using the light source with 1550 nm wavelength.

  • We present a quantification protocol to get the alignment factors of a custom-made spectrometer and the nonlinear fitting function between the measured CCD pixel domain and the wavelength domain to apply the spectral-domain optical coherence tomography using fiber Bragg gratings. We have used 4 different center wavelength gratings with a narrow spectral bandwidth (<0.05 nm) and the same reflectivity (>92 %) to calibrate and align the custom-made spectrometer.

  • Various welding processes are now available for end cap closure of nuclear fuel element such as TG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welding, magnetic resistance welding and laser welding. Even though the resistance and TIG welding processes are widely used for manufacturing commercial fuel elements, they can not be recommended for the remote seal welding of a fuel element at a hot cell facility due to the complexity of electrode alignment, difficulity in the replacement of parts in the remote manner and a large heat input for a thin sheath. Therefore, the Nd:YAG laser system using optical fiber transmission was selected for Zircaloy-4 end cap welding inside hot cell. The laser welding apparatus was developed using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser of 500 watt average power with optical fiber transmission. The weldability of laser welding was satisfactory with respect to the microstructures and mechanical properties comparing with TIG and resistance welding. The optimum operation processes of laser welding and the optical fiber transmission system for hot cell operation in a remote manner have been developed The effects of irradiation on the properties of the laser apparatus were also being studied.

  • By incorporating large core polymer waveguides, which have been developed for increased alignment tolerance in passive fiber attachment, highly efficient variable optical attenuators are proposed. In order to find optimum device structures, 3-dimensional beam propagation method (BPM) simulations are performed. Heat distribution over the polymer film is calculated to find the 3-dimensional index profile data for the BPM simulation. Due to the small index contrast between the core and cladding materials in the large core waveguide, heat-induced radiation occurs for small heating power. While the ordinary VOA needs the temperature to change over $150^{\circ}C$ for 20 dB attenuation, the large core VOA requires only $70^{\circ}C$. In addition to the merit of passive fiber attachment, the proposed VOA has enhanced attenuation efficiency for the lower temperature change.

  • In this paper, we propose a design method for a reliable and improved field-installable optical connectors(FIOC) which are needed for long-distance and low loss FTTH configuration. To this end, we optimize the angle of splicing between the inner fiber and the field fiber of the FIOC, so that the low loss connection of optical fibers is possible without using any angle alignment tools as well as angled cleavers. More precisely, we set the cutting angle of the inner filber and the field fiber to be $2^{\circ}$ by using an angled cleaver and $0^{\circ}{\sim}1^{\circ}$ by using a general fiber cutter, respectively. Splicing these two optical fibers without any further adjustment, we can keep the insertion loss within 0.3dB and the reflection loss within -60dB.
