  • In designing the tracking system of an optical disc drive, it is first necessary to eliminate the undesired influence of any visible mechanical vibrations. In this paper a geometrical method to analyze the frequency response of an elastically supported planar rigid body has been presented. Using the theory of screw, a geometrical expression of a compliant transfer function which describes the effects of the locations of an applied force and observation on the response has been derived. Applying the substructure synthesis method, a technique to stabilize the tracking mechanical system has been presented with a numerical example.

  • Recently, optical disc drives are required to have high density and capacity in according with development of high definition images and rapid increase of various informations. Consequently, the numerical aperture becomes larger, the wavelength of laser is coming to be short. However, it deteriorates rolling mode effect on an optical pickup actuator. Therefore, this paper proposes new design and optimization of tracking coils for reducing it. First, we verify that discord between the center of force and the center of mass by restrictions of design condition is an important factor of rolling mode effect. Then, in order to reduce it, we propose new design parameters of tracking coils. Finally, we reduce rolling mode effect through optimization of tracking coils using Taguchi method and response surface method.

  • A micromirror actuated by piezoelectric unimorph cantilevers is proposed as a tine-tracking device for high-density optical data storage. Bending motions of the metal/PZT/metal unimorphs translate an integrated micromirror along the out-of-plane vertical direction. The micromirror alters the optical path of the incident laser beam and linearly steers the reflected laser beam by its out-of-plane parallel actuation. Numerical analysis shows that the actuated micromirror can satisfy the tracking speed imposed by the requirement on the access time for the high-density optical data storage up to few tens Gbitlin2 owing to the light mass of the micromirror. In this paper, preliminary characteristics of the micro-machined PZT actuated micromirror (PAM) are reported. Only a 360 nm-thick PZT film deposited by sol-gel process shows both good electrical and mechanical characteristics for the fine-tracking actuator. The micromirror can be easily actuated up to several micrometers under low voltage operation condition well below 10 volts.

  • Robust tracking controller of optical disk drive(ODD) is designed using quantitative feedback theory(QFT). Nominal plant model is identified from real system through modal test. Uncertainties and control performance of tracking servo are specified, and robust controller satisfying these specifications is designed in the QFT framework. To verify the performances of designed controller, experiment are performed in a digital signal processor(DSP) environment, and experimental results are compared with simulations.

  • Tracking system is essential for Image Guided Surgery(IGS). Optical Tracking System(OTS) is widely used to IGS for its high accuracy and easy usage. However, OTS doesn't work when occlusion of marker occurs. In this paper sensor data fusion with OTS and Inertial Navigation System(INS) is proposed to solve this problem. The proposed system improves the accuracy of tracking system by eliminating gaussian error of the sensor and supplements the disadvantages of OTS and IMU through sensor fusion based on Kalman filter. Also, sensor calibration method that improves the accuracy is introduced. The performed experiment verifies the effectualness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Focusing on the issue that the conventional Kernel Correlation Filter (KCF) algorithm has poor performance in handling scale change and obscured objects, this paper proposes an anti-occlusion and scale adaptive tracking algorithm in the basis of KCF. The average Peak-to Correlation Energy and the peak value of correlation filtering response are used as the confidence indexes to determine whether the target is obscured. In the case of non-occlusion, we modify the searching scheme of the KCF. Instead of searching for a target with a fixed sample size, we search for the target area with multiple scales and then resize it into the sample size to compare with the learnt model. The scale factor with the maximum filter response is the best target scaling and is updated as the optimal scale for the following tracking. Once occlusion is detected, the model updating and scale updating are stopped. Experiments have been conducted on the OTB benchmark video sequences for compassion with other state-of-the-art tracking methods. The results demonstrate the proposed method can effectively improve the tracking success rate and the accuracy in the cases of scale change and occlusion, and meanwhile ensure a real-time performance.

  • This paper describes an algorithm for arbitrary point tracking using pyramidal optical flow. The optical flow is calculated based on the Lucas-Kanade's optical flow estimation in this paper. The image pyramid is employed to calculate a big motion while being sensitive to a small motion. Furthermore, a rectification process is proposed to reduce the error which is increased as it goes down to the lower level of the image pyramid. The accuracy of the optical flow estimation was increased by using some constraints and sub-pixel interpolation of the optical flow and this makes our algorithm to track points in which they do not have features such as edges or corners. The proposed algorithm is implemented and primary results are shown in this paper.

  • This paper realizes control of the motion of a swimming robot fish in order to implement an underwater robot fish aquarium. And it implements positional control of a two-axis trajectory path of the robot fish in the aquarium. The performance of the robot was verified though certified field tests. It provided excellent performance in driving force, durability, and water resistance in experimental results. It can control robot motion, that is, it recognizes an object by using an optical flow object-detecting algorithm, which uses a video camera rather than image-detecting sensors inside the robot fish. It is possible to find the robot's position and control the motion of the robot fish using a radio frequency (RF) modem controlled via personal computer. This paper proposes realization of robot fish motion-tracking control using the optical flow object-detecting algorithm. It was verified via performance tests of lead-lag action control of robot fish in the aquarium.

  • In this paper, mechanism design of optical pickup actuator for fast access is proposed. This actuator is composed of moving magnet type actuator and moving coil type actuator for tracking and fine motion, respectively. Moving magnet type tracking actuator is configurated by two permanent magnets and four air-core solenoids. Additional damper by induced current in tracking actuator can reduce the transient vibration between the coarse seeking servo and fine seeking servo. Variable stiffness can be acquired by applying current to air-core solenoid simply. This actuator can achieve fast access by these additional damper and stiffness. Performance of this actuator is predicted through the FEM, simulation and simple experiment. Settling time for transient vibration is reduced to 14.7% according to simulation result.

  • In this study, an optical imaging method was developed for the measurements of the sizes and velocities of droplets in sprays. Double-exposure single-frame spray images were captured by the imaging system. An image processing program was developed for the measurements of the sizes and positions of individual particles including separation of the overlapped particles and particle tracking and pairing at two time instants. To recognize and separate overlapping particles, the morphological method based on watershed segmentation as well as separation using the perimeter and convex hull of image was used consecutively. Better results in separation were obtained by utilization of both methods especially for the multiple or heavily-overlapped particles. The match probability method was adopted for particle tracking and pairing after identifying the positions of individual particles and it produced good matching results even for large particles like droplets in sprays. Therefore, the developed optical imaging method could provide a reliable way of analyzing the motion and size distribution of droplets produced by various sprays and atomization devices.
