  • When image sensor and lens are fixed on the module, mechanical errors often induce tilt, rotation, or narrow field-of-view of the acquired image. Therefore, the optical characteristics of image sensor modules should be tested by test equipments. This paper explains how to test the optical characteristics of images sensors. It also proposes the standardized description methods of optical characteristics tests which are similar with those of image acquisition characteristics tests. The proposed method helps the test equipments to perform image acquisition characteristics tests and optical characteristics tests together.

  • The optical flow theory can be utilized for automatically tracking and positioning homologous points in digital video (DV) image sequences. In this paper, the Lucas-Kanade optical flow estimation (LKOFE) method and the normalized cross-correlation (NCC) method are compared and analyzed using the DV image sequences acquired by our SONY DCRPC115 DV camera. Thus, an improved optical flow estimation procedure, called 'Iterated Optical Flow Estimation (IOFE)', is presented. Our test results show that the trackable range of 3${\sim}$4 pixels in the LKOFE procedure can be apparently enlarged to 30 pixels in the IOFE.

  • Since the pixel size of the image sensor used in optical systems is gradually decreasing, the resolution specification of the optical system should be inevitably higher. If aberration change according to the eccentricity of a specific lens group occurs, only the amount of eccentricity of a specific lens group may be calculated with the traditional resolution adjustment method so that the aberration of the optical system is minimized to a certain extent. As a result, it is possible to increase the resolution of the optical system and to respond to a sensor with a large number of pixels. However, in the traditional method, there should be no change in specific aberration due to the eccentricity of a specific lens group. In this paper, we propose a new method to eliminate such a limitation of the traditional method in a camera optical system with a floating system, which is to choose and control the arbitrary two lens groups to easily minimize the eccentricity of the optical system in order to obtain an optical system with high resolution.

  • In the design of optical system, important variables of optical system (including indices, shapes, spaces, stops. etc.) must manipulate in order to balance out offensive aberration. In this paper, it carried out a basic study on the design of micro optical system usable for the acquaintance of visual information in the particular conditions such as capsule type endoscopes. In this study, specification for design of optical system selected voluntarily and the basic design of optical system carried out by using the ray tracing method on the assumption that ideal lenses without aberrations. In the designed optical system, the optimization including aberration correction and the performance evaluation of optical system carried out by using the CODE-V. The final designed optical system consists of seven sheets of lenses. Also the results of performance evaluation. the micro optical system combined with aspherical lenses was confirmed to have improved optical performance as compared with the micro optical system consisted of spherical lenses.

  • Since the direct-gradient (DG) method uses the Shack-Hartmann wave front sensor (SH-WFS), based on the phase-conjugation principle, for atmospheric compensation in free-space optical (FSO) communication, it cannot effectively correct high-order aberrations. While the stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) can compensate the distorted wave front, it requires more calculations, which is sometimes undesirable for an FSO system. A hybrid compensation (HC) method is proposed by properly using the DG method and SPGD algorithm to improve the performance of FSO communication. Simulations show that this method can well compensate wave-front aberrations and upgrade the coupling efficiency with few computations, preferable correction results, and rapid convergence rate.

  • This paper proposes a new and simple input prediction method for robust servo system. A robust tracking control system for optical disk drives to reject disk runout was recently proposed based on both Coprime Factorization(CF) and Zero Phase Error Tracking(ZPET) control. The CF control system can be designed simply and systematically. Moreover, this system has not only stability but also robustness to parameter uncertainties and disturbance rejection capability. Since optical disk tracking servo systems can detect only racking error, it was proposed that the reference input signal for ZPET could be estimated from tracking errors. In this paper, we propose a new control structure for the ZPET controller. It requires less memory than the previously proposed method for the reference signal generation. Therefore, it is very effective in runout control. Furthermore, this method can be applied to defective optical disk like surface defects on disk. Numerical simulation and experimental result show the proposed method effective.

  • A scalar Fourier modal method for the numerical analysis of the scalar wave equation in inhomogeneous space with an arbitrary permittivity profile, is proposed as a novel theoretical embodiment of Fourier optics. The modeling of devices and systems using conventional Fourier optics is based on the thin-element approximation, but this approach becomes less accurate with high numerical aperture or thick optical elements. The proposed scalar Fourier modal method describes the wave optical characteristics of optical structures in terms of the generalized transmittance function, which can readily overcome a current limitation of Fourier optics.

  • According to increasing of data transfer rate, printed circuit board (PCB) is required improvement of transmission speed. Optical PCB and its packaging technology can be one of the solutions that overcome the limitations of conventional electrical PCB. The data transmission capacity will be increased 10 Tbps at 2015. To this end, studies on various OPCB technologies are being conducted. For cost-effective and high- performance OPCB, studies of optical coupling by polymer replication process are conducted. In this work, optical waveguide and optical fiber array block were sequentially fabricated by polymer pattern replication method. Using this method we successfully demonstrate low loss optical fiber coupling between optical waveguide and optical fiber arrays. And researches on flip chip bonding process and using electro-optic connectors for packaging are conducted.

  • We proposed an adaptive steganography of an optical image using bit-planes and multichannel characteristics. The experiment's purpose was to compare the most popular methods used in optical steganography and to examine their advantages and disadvantages. In this paper we describe two digital methods: the first uses less significant bits(LSB) to encode hidden data, and in the other all blocks of $n{\times}n$ pixels are coded by using DCT(Digital Cosine Transformation), and two optical methods: double phase encoding and digital hologram watermarking with double binary phase encoding by using IFTA(Iterative Fourier Transform Algorithm) with phase quantization. Therefore, we investigated the complexity on bit plane and data, similarity insert information into bit planes. As a result, the proposed method increased the insertion capacity and improved the optical image quality as compared to fixing threshold and variable length method.

  • In general, one of the methods used to measure distortion is to use the full image of the regular pattern. However, because of low accuracy, this method is mainly used for an optical system such as a camera.. In order to measure distortion with high accuracy less than 1um, one can use the method of measuring the exact position of a mask image. In this case, a high accuracy stage with a laser encoder is required. In this paper, we investigate measurement of the distortion of high accuracy with a simple manual stage. The main idea is that we split and measure the mask image with the overlapping area by using CCD or CMOS, and then we get an exact position of the mask image by integrating the adjacent split images. We use the Canny Edge Detection method to get the position information of the mask image and we researched the process to exactly calculate distortion by using coordinate transformations and a least square method.
