A novel optical cell compressor for optical time division multiplexing system is presented. The compressor is capable of generating optically compressed very high bit-rate (possibly several tens of Gb/s) signals with minimum hardware. Contrast to the previously reported optical compressor, the compressor is mainly composed of passive optical devices and requires no synchronization among control signals in the process of compression, which results in simple implementation. We demonstrate a generation of optically compressed 6 Gb/s optical cells to confirm the fundamental operation of the compressor.
We report a technique that improves the spatial resolution of optical coherence tomography (OCT) by utilizing fiber-based spectral filtering. The proposed technique improves the resolution by filtering out the erbium’s characteristic peak from the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source spectrum, and reshaping the spectrum to Gaussian-like. We used a long period fiber grating (LPG) and an erbium doped fiber (EDF) absorber for the spectral filtering. An in-house made ASE source as well as a commercial ASE source [ASE-FL7002] was used as the OCT sources to study the proposed technique. The resolution of the OCT based on an in-house made ASE source is enhanced from 200 to 40 ㎛ with an LPG. While, the resolution of the OCT based on a commercial ASE source is enhanced from 25 to 19 ㎛ with the aid of an EDF absorber. However, sidelobes still exist in the interferogram due to imperfect spectral filtering, which limited the resolution. Further enhancement in the spatial resolution of the OCT system using the ASE source is possible with the aid of cascaded LPGs and/or carefully designed EDF absorber.

A CubeSat platform has become a popular choice due to inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and low launch cost. However, it requires more power-efficient and higher-data rate downlink capability for space applications related to remote sensing. In addition, the platform is limited by the size, weight and power (SWaP) constraints as well as the regulatory issue of licensing the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. The requirements and limitations have put optical communications on promising alternatives to RF communications for a CubeSat platform, owing to the power efficiency and high data rate as well as the license free spectrum. In this study, we analyzed the performance of optical downlink communications compatible with CubeSat platforms in terms of data rate, bit error rate (BER) and outage probability. Mathematical models of BER and outage probability were derived based on not only the log-normal model of atmospheric turbulence but also a transmitter with a finite extinction ratio. Given the fixed slot width, the optimal guard time and modulation orders were chosen to achieve the target data rate. And the two performance metrics, BER and outage data rate, were analyzed and discussed with respect to beam divergence angle, scintillation index and zenith angle.

In this paper, we present surface-to-underwater visible light communication systems using white LEDs. Pulse position modulation (PPM)-based analogue data communications and on-off keying-based digital data communications systems are developed. Inexpensive and commercial power-LEDs and photo-diodes are used to construct two types of systems. We report the experimental results obtained from the prototype systems to show the possibility of an optical underwater visible light transceiver as a basis for short range underwater wireless network. Their performance deteriorates more than the atmosphere's one because of attenuation and scattering of the light in water, but these results are promising for the potential to create more robust network interface that improve medium performance such as a LED modulation and a photo-detector demodulation.
We have proposed and demonstrated an gas-flow sensor using optical fiber bragg grating(FEG). The flow sensor has no electronics and no mechanical parts in its sensing part and the structure is th11s simple and immune to electromagnetic interference(EMI). The FEG sensor was consisted qf the sensing element and a coil heater. The metal coil was used to supply the current to the FEG. While some currents supply to the coil, the refractive index of the FEG under the coil is changed and thus the wavelength shift of fiber optic sensor was induced In this work, the wavelength shift according to flow-rate was experimentally studied and was used to evaluate the gas flow-rate in a gas tube. As a result, it was possible to measure the flow-rate in a linear range from 5 to $20{\ell}/min$ with a resolution of approximately $1{\ell}/min$ at the applied currents of 100 mA and 120 mA. The measured sensitivities were $15.3\;pm/\ell/min$ for 100 mA and $20.2\;pm/\ell/min$ for 120 mA.
We report the formation of inner cladding modes in the optical fiber having an inner cladding structure. The inner cladding layer located between the core- and the cladding- layers of a conventional fiber might have, so called, inner cladding mode(s). The brief history of the inner cladding fiber and the spectral properties of the inner cladding mode are presented. By utilizing fiber gratings, the spectral properties of the inner cladding mode formed in Dispersion Compensating Fiber (DCF) are discussed. It was observed that one resonant peak of a long-period fiber grating was not sensitive to the variation on the cladding surface. With a fiber Bragg grating, a small group of unusual resonant Peaks was observed between the main Bragg Peak and the series of usual Peaks resulted from the mode coupling to counter-propagating cladding modes. Within the DCF by using fiber gratings, it is noted, at least one mode can be coupled to the inner cladding mode and a few outer cladding modes are severely affected by the inner cladding of the fiber.

We fabricate and analyze fully depleted optical thyristors (DOTs) using quarter wavelength reflector stacks (QWRS). QWRS are employed as bottom mirrors to enhance the emission efficiency as well as the optical sensitivity. In order to analyze their switching characteristics, S-shape nonlinear current-voltage curves are simulated and the reverse full-depletion voltages (Vneg's) of DOTs are obtained as function of semiconductor parameters by using a finite difference method (FDM). The fabricated DOTs show sufficient nonlinear s-shape I-V characteristics and switching voltage changes of these devices with and without bottom mirrors show 1.82 V and 1.52 V, respectively. Compared to a conventional DOT, this device with the bottom mirrors shows about 20% and 46% enhancement in switching voltage change and spontaneous emission efficiency, respectively.

An Ge/B-doped optical fiber with high photosensitivity was fabricated to induce large second-order optical nonlinearity by UV poling. It was found that long period fiber gratings were inscribed on the fiber by the 248 nm KrF excimer laser irradiation with pulse energy of 116 mJ/$cm^2$ and pulse frequency of 10 Hz without hydrogen loading treatment. The photosensitivity was measured by use of the long period fiber grating pair method and the refractive index change of 3.3$10{\times}^{-3}$ was found to be induced in the core of the optical fiber by the KrF excimer laser irradiation of 8.67 kJ/$cm^2$. An H-shaped optical fiber was also fabricated for the UV poling through optimization of the fiber drawing condition.

In this paper, we propose a novel UE(User Equipment) position tracking algorithm of visible light signals, and analyze BER performance when optical beamforming scheme is applied in VLC(Visible Light Communications) system. The optical beamforming scheme as an interference mitigation method provides good optical channel conditions between UE(Rx) and LED light(Tx), and lead to better BER performance because UE is able to get a better RSSI(Received Signal strength indication) value. For the system BER, the proposed UE position tracking method for optical beamforming transmission demonstrates the performance enhancement compared to a system not applied the optical beamforming transmission scheme, and up to about 5~6dB SNR performance gain is achieved. The results of the paper can be applied to design of various VLC and LBS applications for ubiquitous home network systems.

Because of rapid technological advancements, increased data rate support has become the key criterion for future communication medium selection. Multimode optical fibers and multicore optical fibers are well matched to high data rate throughput requirements because of their tendency to support multiple modes through one core at a time, which results in higher data rates. Using the numerical mode solver OptiFiber, we have designed a concentric core fiber by investigating certain design parameters, namely core diameter (µm), wavelength (nm), and refractive index profile, and as a result, the number of channels, material losses, bending losses, polarization mode dispersion, and the effective nonlinear refractive index have been determined. Space division multiplexing is a promising future technology that uses few-mode fibers in parallel to form a multicore fiber. The experimental tests are conducted using the standard second window wavelength of 1,550 nm and simulated results are presented.
