  • As one of the core technologies in the field of the optical communication with WDM, the optical cross connector with movements of micro mirrors is getting important day by day. The packaging structure of 2-dimensional NxN MOEMS switch should be determined by the harmonization of the following items such as the geometrical compatability between optical and structural components, the characteristics of optical input and output parts with device, and the electrical performance for the operation of micro mirrors. Therefore, the packaging process could be defined as the integrated technology completed by the optical and electrical science and the material science for the understanding of its thermo-mechanical properties with packaging materials. In the present study, the harmonization between the optical and structural components as well as the optical characteristics of lens system used will be investigated.

  • Controllable waveguide of optical vortex solitons is possible by using the rotational characteristics of optical vortices, while the relative phase difference across the soliton profiles can be used to steer the waveguide direction in case of two-dimensional dark solitons. It is important to understand in detail what sources contribute to the rotation of optical vortices to apply optical vortex solitons to the optical switchyard. (omitted)

  • We report on the parameter-dependent optical characteristics of the unidirectional single-mode lasing square ring cavities. Using the taper-step section in the square cavities, the resonant direction can be selected and we characterize the optical losses by changing the taper lengths. Various kinds of square ring cavities are fabricated, based on InGaAsP/InGaAs multiple quantum well semiconductor materials. From the experimental results we obtain the optimized taper length for a given device structure, while maintaining unidirectional single-mode lasing.

  • In this paper an optical voltage sensor and an optical current sensor which can be used for the measurement of impulse voltage and current are implemented. BSO single crystal is utilized as a voltage sensor(Pockels effect cell). An rare earth doped YIG is used as a current sensor(Faraday effect cell). A new signal processing technique is adopted not only to avoid the influences o external optical fiber pertubations of transmitting optical fiber but also to improves the frequency response characteristics of the fiber-optic voltage and current sensors. Experimental results show that optical voltage sensor has maximum 2.5% error within the voltage range from 0V to 500V. and optical current sensor has maximum 2.5% error within the current range and that of optical current sensor is about 1.5% within temperature range from -2$0^{\circ}C$ to 6$0^{\circ}C$. The proposed optical sensors have good frequency response characteristics within the frequency range from DC to 10MHz.

  • In general, such methods as interferometers or wavefront sensors are commonly used for testing of an optical system and optical components. In these cases, the surrounding environments are unlikely to affect the measurements. On the other hand, intraocular lenses of hydrophilic materials with special properties experience a certain difficulty in testing the optical properties. An intraocular lens is dried in the air, which causes deformation and changes the optical characteristics such as index of refraction and thickness. Thus, it is hard to measure the optical characteristics of an intraocular lens by using common methods. In this study, a special structure is used for measuring of the transmission wavefront aberration and effective focal length of an intraocular lens of hydrophilic materials by using a Shark-Hartmann sensor among the various measuring methods. As an application of this measuring method, this study shows a simple method to measure the index of refraction of unknown liquids with a plano-convex lens with a well known index of refraction. Also, this method is used to measure the optical properties of a plano-convex such as index of refraction and curvature by using a liquid with a well known index of refraction.

  • Radially polarized beams with the ability to generate a sub-wavelength sized spot in a longitudinal field provides significant applications in microscopic imaging, optical tweezers, lithography and so on. However, this excellent property can also be achieved based on conventional circularly polarized beams. Here, we demonstrate its ability to create a strong longitudinal field by comparing the tight focusing characteristics of fractional-order vortex modulated radial polarized and left-handed circular polarized Bessel-Gauss beams. Additionally, the possibility of generating arbitrary fractional-order vortex modulated Bessel-Gauss beams with a strong longitudinal field is demonstrated. A special modulation method of left-handed circularly polarized Bessel-Gauss beams modulated by a fractional-order vortex is adopted creatively and a series of regulation laws are obtained. Specifically, the fractional-order phase modulation parameter n can accurately control the number of optical lobes. The ratio of the pupil radius to the incident beam waist β1 can control the radius of the optical lobes. The first-order Bessel function amplitude modulation parameter β2 can control the number of layers of optical lobes. This work not only adds a new modulation method for optical micromanipulation and optical communication, but also enriches the research on fractional vortex beams which has very important academic significance.

  • The spectral irradiance and underwater transmission characteristics of a combined high-luminance light-emitting diode (LED) lights have been studied to evaluate suitable light sources for fishing lamps of the next generation. The wavelengths at which the irradiance was maximum were changed from 473, 501, 525, and 465 nm for blue, peacock blue, green, and white LED light to 475, 504 and 528 nm for [$F_{WB}$], [$F_{PB}$] and [$F_{GB}$] combined LED lights, respectively. If the irradiance characteristics at 400-700 nm wavelengths are set as 100%, the irradiance rates at 450-499 nm and 500-549 nm were decreased from 82.4% and 56% for blue, peacock blue LED light to 60.0%, 38.5% for [$F_{WB}$], [$F_{WP}$] combined LED lights. The underwater transmission characteristics of the combined LED lights were superior in the order [$F_{WB}$], [$F_{BP}$], [$F_{GB}$] in optical water type I; [$F_{WB}$], [$F_{PB}$], [$F_{GP}$] in optical water type II-III; and [$F_{GP}$], [$F_{WP}$], [$F_{PB}$] in optical water type 1. Setting the 10m depth underwater transmission characteristics of the combined LED lights in optical water type I at 100%, the transmission of water types II, III and 1 drops to 29.5%, 8.0% and 2.2%. Based on the distribution of spectral irradiance and underwater transmission characteristics calculated in optical water types II-III, where was the jigging ground for fishing lamps, the [$F_{WB}]$ and [$F_{GP}$] combined LED lights can be used as a suitable light sources for fishing lamps of the next generation.

  • The optical characteristics of merocyanine dyes have been investigated widely due to their possible application to the high efficiency photo-electric devices. The optical systems are mostly fabricated using vacuum evaporation. casting and Langmuir-Blodgett method and the arrangement and orientation of dye molecules is one of the most important factors in the study on the optical characteristics. In this study. we fabricated the molecular systems through the LB techniques and investigated the optical characteristics of merocyanine dye LB film using the oscillation characteristics of quartz crystal. It was quite interesting behavior that the resistance and frequency shift at the parallel resonance under the UV irradiation.
