  • As broadband access is evolving from digital subscriber lines to optical access networks, Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) are considered a promising solution for next generation broadband access. The point-to-multipoint topology of EPONs requires a time-division multiple access MAC protocol for upstream transmission. In this paper, we propose a new enhanced dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm with fairness called EFDBA for multiple services over EPONs. The proposed algorithm is composed of a fairness counter controller and a fairness system buffer in the optical line terminal. The EFDBA algorithm with fairness can provide increased capability and efficient resource allocation in an EPON system. In the proposed EFDBA algorithm, the optical line termination allocates bandwidth to the optical network units in proportion to the fairness weighting counter number associated with their class and queue length. The proposed algorithm provides efficient resource utilization by reducing the unused remaining bandwidth made by idle state optical network units.

  • We demonstrate an optical asynchronous transfer mode/wavelength division multiplexing (OATM/WDM) optical access network, using a router based on an optical header decoder to conduct next-generation communications. The router consists of a decoder or hardware analysis processing of the header bit and switches. The router in the OATM/WDM optical access network is a key technology by which to satisfy subscribers’ requests, including reliability, cost efficiency, high speed, large-capacity transmission, and elevated information security. In this study, we carry out experiments in which a header decoder delivers to 16 and 32 subscribers with a single wavelength in the router. These experiments confirm the decoder’s successful operation via hardware using 4 and 5 header bits. We propose that this system may significantly contribute toward the realization of an optical access network that provides high-quality service to subscribers of next-generation communications.

  • Experimental demonstration of bipolar spectral encoding code-division multiple-access with modified pseudorandom noise codes is presented. Bipolar spectral encoding is achieved with an erbium-doped fiber amplifier amplified spontaneous emission source and arrayed waveguide gratings. The bit-error rate performance of 1.25 Gbps signal transmission over 80 km single mode fiber is measured in a multiple-user environment.

  • An Ethernet PON(Passive Optical Network) is an economical and efficient access network that has received significant research attention in recent years. A MAC(Media Access Control) protocol of PON , the next generation access network, is based on TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) basically and can classify this protocol into a fixed length slot assignment method suitable for leased line supporting QoS(Quality of Service) and a variable length slot assignment method suitable for LAN/MAN with the best effort. For analyzing the performance of these protocols, we design an Ethernet PON model using OPNET tool. To establish the maximum efficiency of a network, we verify a MAC protocol and determine the optimal number of ONUs(Optical Network Unit) that can be accepted by one OLT(Optical Line Terminal) and propose the suitable buffer size of ONU based on analyzing the end-to-end Ethernet delay, queuing delay, throughput, and utilization.

  • Emerging high broad band multimedia service with high quality has led to demand for challenge of optical access network and Passive Optical Network is one of the most important technologies for future optical access network. In this paper, we study the scheduling algorithm for WDM-PON in SUCCESS network architecture, a next generation hybrid WDM/TDM optical access network architecture. Due to economic implementation of this architecture, the shared resources efficiently need to be assigned and then we propose the efficient scheduling algorithm based on specific architecture and characters of SUCCESS. We evaluate and analyze the performance in terms of the average packet delay and throughput of the whole system.

  • In this paper, we deal with a new techno-economic modeling and analysis for optical access networks. In deploying the fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) architecture, network planner needs to consider the following techno-economic issues: when do we need to upgrade existing local access network to FTTH network? how much do we invest to maximize profit? In order to answer these techno-economic questions, we need to consider the impact of emerging technologies and business environment. Toward this end, we develop a new techno-economic modeling to deal with the inherent complexity of technology evolution and cost economics. In particular, the new modeling approach provides us with an techno-economic analysis of technology alternatives such as ethernet passive optical network (E-PON) and wavelength division multiplex passive optical network (WDM-PON). In this analysis, we focus on the impact of critical factors such as the cost characteristic of proposed architecture and digital subscriber line (DSL) subscriber's churn-in to FTTH service and churn-out. We develop mixed integer-programming models for finding the evolution path of local access networks to broadband network architectures.

  • This paper reviews the recent trends in optical access technologies and their future directions. As the number of hyper-connected, ultra-low-latency, and hyper-realistic services increases, the wireless path has become shorter and the optical access network has become deeply penetrated into the end user. The optical access network continues to evolve through endless innovation via high-speed, ultra-low-latency, and abstraction/virtualization technologies.

  • We propose a new optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) scheme for reducing multiple access interference (MAI) and enhancing performance for optical subscriber access networks using modified pseudorandom noise (PN)-coded fiber Bragg gratings with bipolar OCDMA decoders. Through the bipolar OCDMA decoder and the modified PN codes, MAI among users is effectively depressed. As the data are encoded either by a unipolar signature sequence of the modified PN code or its complement according to whether the data bit is 1 or 0, the bit error ratio (BER) can be more improved with the same signal to interference plus noise ratio over the conventional on-off shift keying-based OCDMA system. We prove by numerical analysis that the BER of the proposed bipolar OCDMA system is better than the conventional unipolar OCDMA system. We also analyze the spectral power distortion effects of the broadband light source.

  • Ethernet-based passive optical network(EPON) technology is being considered as a promising solution for next-generation broadband access network. It must have the property of high efficiency, low cost, and support quality of service(QoS). A major feature for this new architecture is the use of a shared transmission media between all connected optical network unit(ONU). Hence, medium access control(MAC) arbitration mechanisms are essential for the successful implementation of EPON. In this paper we propose a simple dynamic bandwidth allocation(DBA) algorithm that improves the performance of network and supports IP-based multimedia applications with the bursty data traffic. In addition, we introduce analytic models of proposed algorithms and prove the system based on our algorithm to be asymptotically stable. Simulation results show the new DBA algorithm provides high bandwidth efficiency and low queueing delay of ONU in EPON.
