  • The learning automaton is an automaton to update systematically the strategy for enhancing the performance in response to the output results, and several schemes of learning automata have been presented. In this paper, S-model learning automata are applied in order to achieve the best compromise solution between an optimal solution for economic operation and an optimal solution for stable operation of the power system under the circumstance that the loads vary randomly. It is shown that learning automata are applied satisfactorily to the multiobjective optimization problem for obtaining the best tradeoff among the conflicting economy and stability objectives of power systems.

  • In this paper, the optimum drilling operation sequence which results into the minimum overall machining time required to produce a (multi-diameter) hole is identified. The operation sequence is defined as the set of ordered operations used for producing a (multi-diameter) hole. The overall machining time is derived by summing the minimum machining times of each operation assigned to a sequence. The operations represent the drilling actions of certain sizes to produce the related holes. The minimum machining time of each operation is obtained by solving the optimization problem. Finally, this paper will identify the effects of machining constraints on the overall machining times and their relationships to sequence selection.

  • The recent manufacturing industry in Japan has found it difficult to transfer skills from trained workers to inexperienced workers because the former ages and then retires. This is a particular problem for lathe process, as this operation requires explicit and tacit knowledge, and defining the skills clearly in a manual is difficult. This study aims to develop a training system for lathe operation by using a simulator; this includes formulas that help define the relationship between the speed of tool feed and cutting sound/shape of chips which were proposed in the preceding study. The developed training system is verified the effectiveness.

  • This paper presents a new approach for assessing the dynamic reliability in a complex system such as a nuclear power plant. The method is applied to a dynamic analysis of the potential accident sequences which may occur during mid-loop operation. Mid-loop operation is defined as an operation to make RCS water level below the top of the flow area of the hot legs at the junction with the reactor vessel for repairs and maintenance of steam generators and reactor coolant pumps for a specific time. The Idea behind this approach consists of both the use of the concept of the performance achievement/requirement correlation and of a dynamic event tree generation method. The assessment of the system reliability depends on the determination of both the required performance distribution and the achieved performance distribution. The quantified correlation between requirement and achievement represents a comparison between two competing variables. It is demonstrated that this method is easily applicable and flexible in that it can be applied to any kind of dynamic reliability problem.

  • Conventional switched capacitor converters have an inherent drawback that their efficiency decreases as the output current increases. This inherent drawback is due to a periodical forced charging and discharging operation in the internal switched capacitors accompanied by a large capacitor current. Their efficiency can not be increased by decreasing its internal resistance. As a result, conventional switched capacitor converters have been limited to uses with a very small output current. To solve this problem we presented a novel switched capacitor converter topology that uses a resonant operation instead of the forced charging and discharging operation. Its advantage over a conventional switched capacitor converter is higher efficiency even in a high output current region. In this paper, the operation analysis and steady-state characteristics are described in detail for a half buck type switched capacitor converter, and they are confirmed by experimentation.

  • Dial-a-ride is the most widely available transit service for disabled persons or seniors in the United States and Europe. This paper studies a static dial-a-ride problem considering multiple depots, heterogeneous vehicles, and soft time windows. In this paper, we apply a heuristic based on clustering first-routing second(HCR) to a real-world large dial-a-ride problem from Maryland Transit Administration(MTA). MTA's real operation is compared with the results of developed heuristic for 24 cases. The objective function of the proposed model is to minimize the total cost composed of the service provider's cost and the customers' inconvenience cost. For the comparison, the objective function values of HCR do not include waiting cost, delay cost, and excess ride cost. The objective function values from HCR are better than those from MTA's operation for all cases. This result shows that our heuristic method can make the real operation better and more efficient.

  • The P-3C maritime patrol aircraft operated by the Republic of Korea Navy is equipped with various sensor devices (LRUs, line replace units) for tactical data collection. Depending on the characteristics of the sensor device, it operates with various communication protocols such as IEEE 802.3, MIL-STD-1553A/B, and ARINC-429. In addition, the collected tactical data is processed in the tactical station for mission operators, and this tactical station constitutes a clustering network on Gigabit Ethernet and operates in a distributed processing method. For communication with the sensor device, a specific tactical station mounts a peripheral device (eg. ARINC-429 interface card). The problem is that the performance of the entire distributed processing according to the peripheral device control and communication relay of this specific device is degraded, and even the operation stop of the tactical station has a problem of disconnecting the communication with the related sensor device. In this paper, we propose a method to mount a separate gateway to solve this problem, and the validity of the proposed application is demonstrated through the operation result of this gateway.

  • Interest in high productivity and streamlined operation is growing amid a heated competition between ports and mega size vessel oriented operation. It becomes clear that terminals that operate YT(Yard Tractor) for transportation in container yard have less efficiency in operation and cost comparing terminals functioning AGV(Automated Guided Vehicle) system. To offset disadvantages arising out of YT operations, continual efforts (e,g YT pooling operation) were taken place for the last decade, but the result has not been fruitful; YT pooling operation still has a problem in that it cannot read individual YT's actual location. This study suggests 'YT dynamic operation model'- a practical application of RTLS(Real Time Location System) technology which will solve YT pooling operation problems.

  • A new protection coordination algorithm in Multi-Agent based distribution automation system is proposed in this paper. Distribution network protection coordination is acted by normal state distribution operation. But, in more and more complex distribution network structure, it has a big problem that central server processed all measurement data, coordination setting and controls for operation. So, a algorithm to change coordination setting is proposed automatically in terminal devices which Recloser and OCR to include Multi-Agent concepts in distribution network.

  • In this paper, we will present an array processor for implementation of digital neural networks. Back-propagation model can be formulated as a consecutive matrix-vector multiplication problem with some prespecified thresholding operation. This operation procedure is suited for the design of an array processor, because it can be recursively and repeatedly executed. Systolic array circuit architecture with Residue Number System is suggested to realize the efficient arithmetic circuit for matrix-vector multiplication and compute sigmoid function. The proposed design method would expect to adopt for the application field of neural networks, because it can be realized to currently developed VLSI technology.
