Analytical approach was followed in this work under both the steady state and transient operating conditions to find optimum boundary conditions, where the optically accessible quartz engine can run safely without breaking. Temperature and stress distribution was predicted by FEM analysis. In order to validate thermal boundary condition, model reliability and constraint, outside cylinder temperature was measured and previous study was also followed up numerically. To reduce thermal stress level, three types of outside cooling (natural, moderate forced and intensive forced convection) were considered. Effects of clamping force and combustion pressure were conducted to investigate mechanical stress level. Cylinder thickness, was changed to fine the optimum cylinder thickness. The versatile results achieved from this work can be basic indication, which is capable of causing a sudden quartz cylinder breaking during fired operation.
The Z-source inverter (ZSI) provides unique features such as the ability to boost dc voltage with a single stage simple structure. Although the dc capacitor voltage can be boosted by a shoot-through state, the voltage stress across the switching devices is rapidly increased, so high switching device power is required at the ZSI. In this paper, algorithms for minimizing the voltage stress are suggested. The possible operating region for obtaining a desired ac output voltage according to both the shoot-through time and active state time is investigated. The reference capacitor voltages are derived for minimizing the voltage stress at any desired ac output voltage by considering the dc input voltage. The proposed methods are carried out through the simulation studies and experiments with 32-bit DSP.

Fracture phenomenon has been reported on blades, rotors, connections and rotor discs of LP turbines of nuclear power plants, which is caused by fatigue, stress corrosion and erosion. In this study, as a tool of reliability evaluation, a number of stress and fracture analyses were performed on the defected area under various operating conditions using the finite element method. Possible defects on key-way and rotor disc were assumed to be two-dimensional cracks and centrifugal force, temperature distribution and shrink-fit effect were included as external loads. From stress analysis results, stress intensity factors were obtained and these values can be utilized to evaluate reliability and predict remaining lifetime of the turbine discs.
This paper presents a buck circuit topology of high-frequency with a single switching element. It solved the problem which arised from hard-switching in high-frequency using a resonant snubber and operating under the principle of ZCS turn-on and ZVS turn-off commutation schemes. In the existing circuit, it has the voltage stress which is twice of input voltage in free-wheeling diode. But in the proposed circuit, it has voltage stress which is lower than input voltage with modifing a location of free-wheeling diode. In this paper, it explained the circuit operation of each mode and confirmed the waveform of each mode with simulation result. Also the experiment result verified the simulation waveform and compared the existing voltage stress of free-wheeling diode with the proposed voltage stress of that. Moreover, it compares and analyzes the proposed circuit's efficiency with the hard-switching circuit's efficiency according to the change of load current.
Thick-walled cylinders, such as a cannon or nuclear reactor, are autofrettaged to induce advantageous residual stresses into pressure vessels and to increase operating pressure and the fatigue lifetimes. As the autofrettage level increases, the magnitude of compressive residual stress at the bore also increases. The purpose of the present paper is to predict the accurate residual stress of SCM440 high strength steel using the Kendall model which was adopted by ASME Code. Hydraulic pressure process was applied and thick-walled cylinders were autofrettaged up to 30% overstrain levels. Electro polishing was performed to get more accurate data. Residual stresses were measured by X-ray diffraction method. The autofrettaged surface which was plastically deformed analyzed using a scanning electron microscope(SEM). Although there were some differences in measured residual stress and numerical, there is a tendency to agree.
In the welding process, weldments usually include repair weld during the manufacturing process. Repair welds is supposed to cause strong tensile residual stress. Moreover weldments, usually made by Alloy 82/182, is susceptible to PWSCC. Therefore, mitigation of welding residual stress in weldments is important for reliable operating. PWOL is one of the methods for mitigation and verified for over twenty years. In this paper, residual stress distribution of repaired weldments and the effect of PWOL on mitigation is examined for surge nozzle.
For mechanical systems operating at high tempertature, thermal fatigue phenomenon has been recognized as a major cause of mechanical component failures. To evaluate cumulative fatigue damage as a conesquence of thermal fatugue on real time, the stress tranfer function(Green's function) approach is popularly used. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of thermophsical properties on the stress tranfer function. For this purpose a modified Green's function approach considering temperature-dependent thermophysical properties is proposed. Two case studies were performed and the proposed approach agrees well with full finite element analysis.
Plastics is commonly used in consumer electronics because of it is high strength per unit mass and good productivity. But plastic parts are usually distorted after injection molding due to the residual stress after filling, packing, cooling process, and etc. And plastic material is to be deteriorated according to various temperature conditions and operating time, which can be characterized by stress relaxation and creep. The viscoelastic behaviour of plastic materials in time domain can be expressed by the Prony series of the commercial code, ABAQUS. In the paper, the process to predict the post deformation under cyclic thermal loadings was suggested. The process was applied to the real panel, and the deformation predicted by the analysis was compared with that of real test, which showed the possibility of applying the suggested process to predict the post deformation of plastic product under thermal loadings.
The crack growth under creep condition is one of the major damage mechanisms which determines remaining life of the component operating at high temperatures. In this paper, the creep crack growth by grain boundary cavitation is studied, which is frequently observed failure mechanism for creep brittle materials. As a result of diffusive growth of creep cavities, it is shown that the crack-tip stress field is modified from the original stress distribution by the amount of singularity attenuation parameter which is function of crack growth rate and material properties. Also, the stress relaxation at crack-tip results in the extension of cavitating area by the load dump effect to meet the macroscopic force equilibrium conditdion.
Since the competitive environment, it has become common for firms to reduce its workforce to diminish operating cost. Accordingly, job insecurity among employees has been increasing. Previous works on job insecurity have not paid adequate attention to the influence of job insecurity on safety behavior. The current paper investigates the impact of job insecurity on safety behavior and its intermediating mechanisms. In specific, this paper delves into the mediating effect of job stress, as well as the moderating effect of servant leadership in the association between job insecurity and job stress. The results demonstrated that that job insecurity has a positive (+) influence on job stress, which has a negative (-) influence on safety behavior. Moreover, job stress mediated the association between job insecurity and safety behavior. Furthermore, servant leadership moderated the job insecurity-safety behavior link.
