  • In this study, an experimental method measuring the scroll under the temperature distribution similar to the operating condition is proposed and the results are presented. Direct measurement of the actual thermal stress is very difficult because of the rapid and complex motion of the orbiting scroll. Therefore, the experimental condition is provided on the stationary scroll heated in the electric furnace and, then, the mechanical stress and the effects of refrigerant are excluded from the resulting measurement. The experimental results are compared with these of FEM, both showing good agreement.

  • The failure probabilities of pipes in nuclear power plants due to stress corrosion are obtained using the P-PIE program, which is developed for evaluating failure probability of pipes based on the existing PRAISE program. Leak, big leak and LOCA(loss of coolant accident) probabilities are calculated as a function of operating time for several pipes in a domestic nuclear plant. The sensitivity analysis is also performed to find out the important parameters for the failure of pipes due to stress corrosion. The results show that the steady state oxygen concentration and steady state temperature are important parameters and failure probability is very low when the oxygen concentration is maintained according to the regulation.

  • Bogie is mainly consisted of the bogie frame, suspensions, wheels and axles, braking system, and transmission system. The complex shapes of the bogie frame and the multiaxial loading condition induced in real operation make it difficult to design the bogie frame against the fatigue. In this study, multiaxial fatigue criteria were reviewed. Stress analysis of the bogie frame has been performed for the various loading conditions according to the UIC Code 615-4. Magnitudes of the stress amplitude and mean stress were estimated based on the stress analysis results to simulate the operating loads encountered in service. Fatigue strength of the bogie frame was evaluated by using the constant life diagram of the material. 3-D surface model ling, finite element meshing, and finite element analysis were performed by Pro-Engineer, MSC/PATRAN, and MSC/NASTRAN, respectively.

  • PMOSFETs were studied on the effect of Hot-Carrier induced drain leakage current (Gate-Induced-Drain-Leakage). The result turned out that change in Vgl(drain voltage where 1pA/$\mu$m of drain leadage current flows) was largest in the Channel-Hot-Hole(CHH) injection condition and next was in dynamic stress and was smallest in electron trapping (Igmax) condition under various stress conditions. It was analyzed that if electron trapping occurrs in the overlap region of gate and drain(G/D), it reduces GIDL current due to increment of flat-band voltage(Vfb) and if CHH is injected, interface states(Nit) were generated and it increases GIDL current due to band-to-defect-tunneling(BTDT). Especially, under dynamic stress it was confirmed that increase in GIDL current will be high when electron injection was small and CHH injection was large. Therefore as applying to real circuit, low drain voltage GIDL(BTDT) was enhaced as large as CHH Region under various operating voltage, and it will affect the reliablity of the circuit.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide the method of conventional stress analysis for a pressurized hydraulic cylinder with internal thread undercut. In the case of hydraulic cylinder with thread undercut, several loads and stresses occur during operating. So, the thread undercut can be most critical section has to be considered in detail for strength check. In this paper, the conventional stress analysis method at internal thread undercut of hydraulic cylinder based on Kowalski's formula is introduced. The method is verified by comparing to FEM analysis results using ANSYS.

  • This technical note provides some considerations for the metallographic observation of intergranular attack (IGA) in Alloy 600 steam generator tubes. The IGA region was crazed along the grain boundaries through a deformation by an applied stress. The direction and extent of the crazing depended on those of the applied stress. It was found that an IGA defect can be misevaluated as a stress corrosion crack. Therefore, special caution should be taken during the destructive examination of the pulled-out tubes from operating steam generators.

  • The verification for the design limit margin of the power device for the information communication and surveillance systems using HALT(Highly Accelerated Life Test) reliability test is described. The HALT reliability test performs with a step stress method which change condition until the marginal step in a design and development phase. The HALT test methods are the low temperature(cold) step stress test, the high temperature(hot) step stress test, the thermal shock cyclic stess test, and the high temperature destruct limit(hot DL) step stress test. The power device is checked the operating performance during the test. In this paper, the HALT was performed to find out the design limit margin of the power device.

  • One of the basic tasks in the automobile manufacturing process is to design a bare chassis, which is the basic frame of a vehicle, and a bracket is a member connecting various devices to the frame. Bracket, which is a member connecting the engine, transmission, and suspension, which are the core devices of driving and operating the vehicle, to the frame, must maintain safety during vehicle operation. If the bracket connecting the various devices constituting the vehicle to the frame does not have durability, serious accidents may occur during operation of the vehicle. In this study, we performed stress analysis on the brackets installed in the bare chassis of the 25-passenger bus in the development stage. Based on the stress analysis performed, an improved bracket dimension was proposed.

  • MEMS technology applying to the sensors and micro-electro devices is complete system. These microsystems are made by variable processes. Especially, the mentallization process has very important functions to transfer the power operating the sensor and signal induced from sensor part. But in the structures of MEMS the local stress concentration and deformation are often yielded by an irregular geometrical shape and different constraint. Therefore, this paper studies the effect of supporting type and thickness ratio about thin film of the substrate on the residual stress variation when the thermal loads is applied to the multi-layer thin film fabricated by metallization process. Specimens were made from several materials such as Al, Au and Cu. Then, uniform thermal load was applied, repeatedly. The residual stress was measured by FE Analysis and nano-indentation method using AFM. Generally, the specimen made of Al induced the larger residual stress than that of made of other materials. Specimen made of Cu and Au having the low thermal expansion coefficient induces the minimum residual stress. Similarly, the lowest indentation length was measured by nano-indentation method in the Si/Au/Cu specimen. Particularly, clusters are created in the specimen made of Cu by thermal load and the indentation length became increasingly large by cluster formation.

  • Austenitic stainless steels (ASSs) are widely used for nuclear pipes as they exhibit a good combination of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, high tensile residual stresses may occur in ASS welds because postweld heat treatment is not generally conducted in order to avoid sensitization, which causes a stress corrosion crack. In this study, round robin analyses on stress intensity factors (SIFs) were carried out to examine the appropriateness of structural integrity assessment methods for ASS pipe welds with two types of circumferential cracks. Typical stress profiles were generated from finite element analyses by considering residual stresses and normal operating conditions. Then, SIFs of cracked ASS pipes were determined by analytical equations represented in fitness-for-service assessment codes as well as reference finite element analyses. The discrepancies of estimated SIFs among round robin participants were confirmed due to different assessment procedures and relevant considerations, as well as the mistakes of participants. The effects of uncertainty factors on SIFs were deducted from sensitivity analyses and, based on the similarity and conservatism compared with detailed finite element analysis results, the R6 code, taking into account the applied internal pressure and combination of stress components, was recommended as the optimum procedure for SIF estimation.
