  • This study investigates business demands for firms operating in the Busan Sasang Industrial Area for the proposed knowledge-industry innovation base. Diverse improvement arrangements are proposed for revitalization of the industrial area. For these purposes, a questionnaire survey was conducted for the examination of physical conditions and enterprise demands among firms. The major findings are as follows. Firstly, judging from the examination of physical conditions, the study area has presented a lower rate of roads and smaller individual lots of land, which would contribute to a worsening business environment for small business owners. Secondly, business request for industrial-area innovation, pilot project needs, and expected impacts demonstrated higher scores. Thirdly, an absolute majority of firms strongly supported the proposed knowledge-industry innovation base and requested an R&D center as the first anchor facility. Based on these findings, guidelines are proposed for an institutional rearrangement plan. First of all, specific field surveys dealing with networking issues and industrial dominance should be immediately carried out. In addition, the proposed knowledge-industry innovation base should be equipped with significant power of influence for the adjacent industrial areas. Lastly, major stakeholders should upgrade the cooperative mechanism for innovative change in the regional industrial complex.

  • An underwater platform operating a passive sonar needs to acquire the target position to perform its mission. In an environment where sea-floor reflections exist, the position of a target can be estimated using the difference in the arrival time between the signals received through multipaths. In this paper, a method of localization for passive sonar is introduced, based on the EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) using the multipath time difference of arrival in underwater environments. TMA (Target Motion Analysis) requires accumulated measurements for long periods and has limitations on own-ship movement, allowing it to be used only in certain situations. The proposed method uses an EKF, which takes measurements of the time differences of the signal arrival in multipath environments. The method allows for target localization without restrictions on own-ship movement or the need for an observation time. To analyze the performance of the proposed method, simulation according to the distance and depth of the target was performed repeatedly, and the localization error according to the distance and water depth were analyzed. In addition, the correlation with the estimated position error was assessed by analyzing the arrival time difference according to the water depth.

  • The purpose of the study is to explore the personal experiences and efforts of science teachers, who have worked in science core schools over the years, in order to evaluate the educational effects and implications of science core school policies. To achieve this purpose, we conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve individual science teachers who have operated programs and curriculum at science core schools. The results provided three case studies presenting how the teachers operated curriculum and how they perceived the benefits of science core schools and identified some commonalities in their experiences and perceptions through cross-case discussions. Three teachers in case studies presented different teaching orientations for science core schools, but they positively perceived its benefits and were very satisfied with the school environment and financial supports from government even though they had more burdens on work. In cross-case analysis among 12 teachers, the teachers commonly presented their passion and enthusiasm for organizing and implementing various extra-curriculum science activities. They believed that such efforts contributed to encouraging their students to consider their careers in science and engineering fields in college. And the differentiated school program has increased reputation and preference for the school from local parents and students. In addition, they felt that these efforts brought their own growth and professional development as science teachers.

  • Process control systems used in most domestic petrochemical corporates today are based on the Windows platforms. As technology leans toward opened environment, the exposure risk of control systems is increasing. However, not many companies are preparing for various cyberattacks due to lack of awareness and misunderstanding of cyber intrusion. This study investigated the extent of how much exposed the petrochemical process control system is to security threats and suggested practical measures to reduce OT cybersecurity vulnerabilities. To identify the cyber threat status of process control systems, vulnerabilities of the Windows platform, a principal cyber threat factor, have been analyzed. For research, three major DCS providers in Korea and the discontinuation of Windows platform of 635 control systems were investigated. It was confirmed that 78% of the survey subjects were still operating in the discontinued windows platforms, and those process control systems were operated in a state vulnerable to cyber intrusions. In order to actively cope with these cyber threats, legal regulations such as designation of critical infrastructure for major petrochemical facilities which is implemented in advanced countries such as the United States are needed. Additionally, it is necessary to take the initiative in eradicating security threats to the process control systems by aggressively introducing security solutions provided from existing DCS suppliers. This paper was submitted to Professor Ko JaeWook's retirement anniversary issue.
