  • The ankle is a complex structure supporting the entire musculoskeletal system during standing and walking. And so the goals of operative treatment for ankle fractures are to obtain an anatomical reduction that is maintained by stable fixation, resulting in a healed fracture and recovery of normal function. The 64 patients who had ankle fractures were treated by arthroscopic reduction(20 cases) and open reduction (43 cases) in Konkuk university hospital from February 1991 to October 1997 and the results were analyzed in clinical and radiological aspects. The following results were obtained. According to the criteria of Meyer, arthroscopic assisted reduction group had good or excellent results in 18 cases (90%) and open reduction group good or excellent in 35 cases (83%). The difference of the results was not significant statistically, but arthroscopic assisted reduction technique has several advantages over open technique; the best assessment of articular surface, lower wound problem, postoperatively faster rate of rehabilitation and minor discomfort.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the complexity of scientific reasoning during open inquiry activities of pre-service elementary school teachers. In this study, 6 pre-service elementary teachers who participated in open-inquiry activities were selected. The data of scientific reasoning during their inquiry process was collected from the video recording of reporting about inquiry process and results, their reports and researcher's notetaking. CSRI Matrix (Dolan & Grady, 2010) was used to analyze the complexity of participants' scientific reasoning. The result showed that the degree of the complexity of their scientific reasoning varied in participants. Particularly the low degree of the complexity of scientific reasoning presented in posing preliminary hypotheses, providing suggestions for future research, communicating and defending finding. Also, The more pre-service teachers' epistemology of inquiry are similar to that of scientists, the more complex scientific reasoning represents. This results suggest that teachers should impress on students the importance of doing the precedent study and providing suggestions for future research, and provide a place for communicating and defending findings.

  • This contribution contained the classical work of an open-hole tensile plate to demonstrate the performance of grating shearography and to compare with the results obtained by other full-field measurement techniques, The isotropic plate with an open-hole has often appeared in the previous contributions introducing novel full-field method and system. Grating shearography directly provided six quantitative measurands about the specimen's surface kinematics by using a single measurement set: three in-plane strains, in plane rotation, and two out-of-plane slopes. The quasi-plane wavefront of grating metrology led to high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and thus neither fitting nor filtering was applied, and the small shearing distance of $101{\mu}m$ could be used. The small shearing distance provided the outstanding spatial resolution of $80{\mu}m$ and sensitivity appropriate for experimental mechanics. Finally, the grating shearography enabled the visualization of the complex surface deformation around the hole and also detected parasitic flexions of the specimen in the micrometer regime during the tensile test.

  • The main motivation for this study was to establish a CFD-based procedure for the analysis of heating characteristics, particularly in industrial furnaces. As certain open-source software packages have gained popularity in dealing with complex industrial problems, the OpenFOAM framework was selected for further development of advanced physical models to meet industrial requirements. In this study, the newly developed comprehensive model was applied to simulate physical processes in the full-scale horizontal furnace of a continuous galvanizing line (CGL). The numerical results obtained indicate that the current approach predicts heating characteristics reasonably well. It was also found that radiative heat transfer plays a dominant role in heating the moving strip. To improve the predictability of our method, further work is required to model the turbulence-chemistry interaction realistically, as well as to impose a physically correct thermal wall boundary condition.

  • An integrated simulation engine provides tools, services, and standards to support various activities in the entire M&S from modeling and simulation to analysis of the simulation results. Many countries have developed integrated simulation engines to efficiently assist complex M&S activities. However, we do not have domestic simulation engines especially designed for defense M&S, therefore, developing M&S softwares still remains as a hard task with high cost and tine. OpenSIM(Open Simulation engine for Interoperable Models) is an integrated simulation engine and provides tools, services and standard interfaces for weapons analysis. OpenSIM's services are comprised of classes, member functions and data attributes which are commonly used in modeling, simulating and analyzing weapons systems. In this paper, we introduce OpenSIM's services in C++ APIs and illustrate them through an ASM example(Air to Surface Missile).

  • Recently, it is difficult for a firm to survive and maintain sustainable competitive advantage through internal R&D only, because changes in the environment are very fast and complex. Accordingly, the paradigm of open innovation is gradually emphasized, and the ratio of external R&D has been increasing in various industries. This study analyzed open innovation through Korean Innovation Survey (KIS) data from Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI). We confirmed the ratio of open innovation based on firms of the manufacturing industry in South Korea, and examined the relationship between open innovation and innovation performance. This study suggests that open innovation is not a new paradigm that did not exist in the past. While the use of government support programs positively influence innovation performance, the use of external R&D doesn't influence innovation performance due to the difficulties associated with managing it. The results of this study will be used to establish the strategic direction and support the decision making when firms conduct innovation activities in the future.

  • Data on age and body weight at breeding, parity, previous litter size, days open and some descriptive body linear traits from 389 meat-type, prolific Black Bengal goats in Tripura State of India, were collected for 3 and 1/2 years (2007 to 2010) and analyzed using logistic regression model. The objectives of the study were i) to evaluate the effect of age and body weight at breeding, parity, previous litter size and days open on litter size of does; and ii) to investigate if body linear type traits influenced litter size in meat-type, prolific goats. The incidence of 68.39% multiple births with a prolificacy rate of 175.07% was recorded. Higher age (>2.69 year), higher parity order (>2.31), more body weight at breeding (>20.5 kg) and larger previous litter size (>1.65) showed an increase likelihood of multiple litter size when compared to single litter size. There was a strong, positive relationship between litter size and various body linear type traits like neck length (>22.78 cm), body length (>54.86 cm), withers height (>48.85 cm), croup height (>50.67 cm), distance between tuber coxae bones (>11.38 cm) and distance between tuber ischii bones (>4.56 cm) for discriminating the goats bearing multiple fetuses from those bearing a single fetus.

  • Background : Complex elbow injuries with associated nerve, muscle, or joint injury commonly develop post-inury stiffness. In order to preserve function, joint congruency, elbow stability and durable wound coverage must be achieved in a timely manner. Methods : A retrospective review of patients who underwent orthopaedic fixation followed by free anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap soft tissue coverage was performed. Five patients were identified and included in this study. Results : We present a series of 5 cases managed with this principle. Soft tissue defects ranged in size from $4{\times}9cm$ ($36cm^2$) to $15{\times}30cm$ ($450cm^2$) and were located either posteriorly (n=4) or anteriorly (n=1). Associated injuries included open fractures (n=3) and motor nerve transection (n=2). Wound coverage was achieved in a mean duration of 18.8 days (range, 11 to 42 day). There were no flap failures and no major complications. The mean postoperative active elbow motion was $102^{\circ}$ (range, $45^{\circ}$ to $140^{\circ}$). Conclusions : In our small series we have highlighted the safety and utility of using the free ALT flap in complex elbow injuries. The ALT flap has many advantages which include abundant skin and subcutaneous tissue; vascularised vastus lateralis muscle that was used in our series to obliterate dead space, provide a vascular bed for nerve grafts and combat infection; and, access to fascia lata grafts for reconstruction of the triceps tendon.

  • A novel heteroleptic ruthenium(II) complex bearing a 4-picolinic acid unit as anchoring ligands (trans-dithiocyanato bis(4-picolinic acid)ruthenium(II) (trans-H1)) was synthesized and its chemical structure was identified by $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR and mass spectroscopy. The optical, thermal, electrochemical and dye adsorption properties of trans-H1 dye were investigated and compared with those of the gold standard ruthenium complex, Ru(4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine)$_2cis(NCS)_2$ (N3). DSSCs based on trans-H1 dyes were examined under the illumination of AM 1.5 G, $100mWcm^{-2}$ and exhibited typical photovoltaic properties with an open-circuit voltage ($V_{OC}$) of 0.46 V, a short-circuit current ($J_{SC}$) of $4.10mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$, a fill factor (FF) of 60.4%, and a conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.14%.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate influencing factors of using Korean medicine services (KMS) using the 2017 Korean Medicine Utilization Survey (KMUS). Methods: Demographic statistics of the survey were summarized and influencing factors of the KMS experience and the intention to visit KMS were analyzed using logistic regression model with complex sample design. Influencing factors were specified based on Andersen's behavioral model of health care utilization and factors associated with individual recognitions of KMS. Additionally, using the ordinary logistic regression model without complex sample design, the survey data were analyzed to compare the results. Results: In the logistic regression analysis, sex, age, health condition, presence of chronic disease, a degree of knowledge about Korean Medicine, and a view about herbal medicine safety were statistically significant both in the KMS experience, and the intention to visit KMS. Marital status was statistically significant in the KMS experience, while family income, a view about the cost of KMS were statistically significant in the intention to visit KMS. Conclusion: Individual recognitions of KMS and enabling components should be considered when establishing KMS policies. In addition, future studies analyzing KMUS need to take into account the complex sample design features of the survey to avoid statistically misleading results.
