  • The purpose of this study is to propose an open source GIS software business model for the revitalization of Korean open source GIS software industry. In this study, we categorized the types of open source software business models and developed an open source software business strategy suitable for GIS companies in Korea. To propose a business model, we applied the business model canvas which is often used in the area of business studies to analyze new business models. We tried to develop the open source GIS business model through both interviews and case studies with Korean open source GIS software companies. We propose three different types of open source GIS software business models such as distributor model, producer model, and 3rd party service provider model as follows: first, the companies which belong to distributor model can carry out business by providing professional services in the market of open source software. Second, the companies which belong to producer model can sell their products to the global market as well as the domestic market. Lastly, given the growing interest in domestic open source software, the number of third-party service providers is likely to continue to increase in the future. Therefore, it is expected that the companies which belong to the third party service provider model will be able to develop various business models by securing the technology.

  • Purpose: This paper has examined the impact of open innovation business model in technology commercialization with the data from 30 companies of manufacturing firms in South Korea. Methods: The findings provide support for distinguishing five hypotheses relating to development time, IP management, sales, firm size and R&D intensity. To test the hypotheses, data were collected using via e-mail and fax. Small and medium-sized (less than 300 employees) and large industrial firms were chosen for this study. Results: The result shows that openness in its business model is positively associated with successful technology commercialization. Conclusion: The major findings and the implications are: First, as the business model gets more open, development period of technology will be more favorable which gets benefit from rising costs of innovation. Second, as the business model gets more open, large portion of sales are created from new products. Thus, the problem of shorter product life in the market which affects large portion of market revenue can be solved through an open business model. Third, in general, R&D intensity, firm size and the level of IP management affect determination of business model types. The findings also suggest that companies need to increasingly address their external technology exploitation process instead of focusing on their internal innovation processes.

  • Companies that use open source SW must comply with the "Open Source SW License" in order to use it freely. However, despite the potential legal responsibilities and risks associated with compliance, they do not know or neglect the risks. For this reason, cases of disputes, including license violations, are soaring. • B2B transaction was expected to dominate in the global market and thus many e-marketplaces have been built since 1999 in Korea. However, only a few e-marketplaces are thriving and the future of B2B e-marketplaces except MRO area seem to be uncertain. This paper explores why B2B transactions only in MRO area are rapidly increasing and examines the competing structure and business models of MRO e-marketplace. Business models of MRO e-marketplaces are various among different countries. However, they can be classified as three business models:information portal model, purchasing agent model, open market model. It is not easy to answer which business model is most competitive because each models have their own advantages and functions. Information portal model can be easily applied for the e-marketplace which operates off-line enterprises. Purchasing agent model is favorable to the e-marketplaces which has already obtained buyers and sellers. Open market model is desirable to the e-marketplace which has excess to global market.

  • This paper aims to compare open source software (OSS) with proprietary software (PS), and to propose a new business model for OSS. Generally speaking, PS has made negative impact on software industry in various ways. In contrast, OSS may reduce negative aspects of lock-in effect and transaction cost the ways in which software distribution has been utilized. In this regard, OSS makes it possible to create a new business model, which is software customization. Software customization is not to sell software license directly to end-users, but to create values by means of developing and capitalizing software-related industries where value chain is linked. In other words, the new business model of OSS is focusing on software market where the value created by OSS can be enhanced.

  • While new service development has become one of the most popular topics among practitioners and academics, methodologies development for new service development is only in its infancy. Especially, despite the growing interests in open innovations that effectively utilize external resources for R&D, existing research on new service development methodology designed to use external resources is scant. This article proposes a new methodology to generate new service business models that utilize massive external resources in combination with internal resources using ICT. The "Open Collaboration Innovation Methodology (OCIM)" is built based upon the theory of open innovation model and social psychology theories on behavioral motivation for cooperation. The model begins with the procedures to identify external resources that meet service objectives and requirements, and suggests motivation, control and monitoring mechanisms to implement a new service model. A business case is followed to demonstrate the use of the model. We expect that this model can be practically used by companies that are planning for developing new business models, and will provide a better understanding on open collaboration models, collective intelligence and crowd sourcing models.

  • A recent trend in innovation paradigm is the shift from closed innovation to open innovation principles. This trend is characterized by the use of purposive inflows and outflows of knowledge not only to accelerate internal innovation, but also to expand the markets for external use of innovation. However, the Not-Invented-Here (NIH), and Not-Sold-Here (NSH) or Only-Use-Here (OUH) syndromes are the most common challenges encountered in open innovation processes. Therefore, this study has the following main aims: 1) propose a research model that explains the factors that influence NIH and NSH/OUH attitudes based on motivation theory with perceived organizational fairness and commitment, 2) investigate their impacts on NIH and NSH/OUH attitudes, and 3) provide useful theoretical and practical insights. The proposed research model was empirically tested using survey data collected from information technology (IT) professionals in Korea. One of the major findings indicates that IT professionals' perceived organizational fairness has a negative effect on NIH attitudes in open innovation process. Theoretical and practical contributions of this study are also discussed.

In order to analyze knowledge structure, this study utilized social network analysis based on "relationship". For the analysis, 13,412 keywords were extracted from 36years worth of article or research related to business model stored in SCOPUS database.
