  • The purpose of this study was to examine the questions in the 'Matter' units of elementary science textbooks under the 7th curriculum. For the analysis, a total of 338 questions were extracted from 15 units. Six criteria (recalling, recognizing, predictive, applied, divergent, and evaluative question) were reconstructed for textbook question analysis based on Blosser(1973)'s question category system for science. The results were as follows. First, there were more closed (recalling, recognizing, predictive, or applied) questions (72.2%) than open (divergent or evaluative) questions (27.8%) in elementary science textbooks. Second, cognitive-memory (recalling or recognizing) question type was the most frequently asked in all grade levels. Open (divergent or evaluative) questions increased according to grade level whereas convergent (predictive or applied) questions decreased. Third, question types were applied based on the characteristics of each unit rather than on children's developmental characteristics. Educational implications were discussed based on the results.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for improving the STEAM class by examining elementary school teachers' difficulties in the STEAM class and discussing solutions. For this research, 25 elementary school teachers in Seoul City and Gyeonggi-do were asked to write their difficulties in the STEAM class in the open-ended questionnaires. After classification of the collected data, an in-depth interview was conducted with one in-service elementary school teacher who is richly experienced in STEAM education to find solutions for each type of difficulties. The study result showed that most of elementary school teachers had difficulties in the STEAM class, due to selection of integrated subjects, production of teaching devices and materials, guidance of group activities, reorganization of the curriculum, assessment and uncooperative co-teachers. One teacher that participated in the interview to discuss solutions for teachers' difficulties was solving the problems in various ways. She said that many of her solutions came from her experience and also, knowledge obtained through a participation in the STEAM training or opportunities to share information with other teachers who belong to the STEAM research institution, was highly helpful.

  • Open education started spontaneously in elementary school and accommodates positively as a result of educational reformation. Open education also contributes to the development of human nature. This developes a creative power and inhances independence according to a main task of school support for the 21st century. A premise of this study is how to fulfill a fresh and wide space field of learning which is an indispensable condition of open education. The study analysed the teachers' reactions to open education after classifying an atmosphere of reception, understanding concepts, and application. This examined the concept, basic principles, characteristics, teaching-learning activiters open education, and quality of learning. The method of research used was on the results from the percentages of questionnaires that were posted to the sample schools. Although the final outcome to open education can not be summarized, three preconclusions of open education are as follows; First an atmosphere of reception is spreading continuously day by day. Secondly, understanding the concept of open education is very important. Thirdly, go percent of all schools have experienced open education were applied to open education. Contrary to some affirmative reactions, there are some disadvantages to open education. incdule, poor educational environments, difficulty in managing schools, lack of repetition of old out-dated teaching skills. Finally in conclusion, we must learn to adapt to the new method of open education as our educational system for the 21st century can not simply rely upon the open education motto. Above all, we must support educational reform and enforce the development of education within the education act.

  • The objective of this study is to propose the architectural basic data for the planning of kindergarten attached to the elementary school. For this study, we selected and investigated 23kindergartens in Gwangju city. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The elementary school in separated style had the advantage of securing educational space and reducing interference with students of elementary school. But it had the problem in using the facilities of elementary school. So we have to consider the kindergarten to be located near by dinning room, multi-purpose hall. 2) Concentrating the entrance, it makes the inside and outside space use easily. For the actual use, we have to establish facilities for convenience in outer-space. 3) For each room, we suggest guides as follow. The classroom and the playroom have to be combined for flexibility and supervision. In the planning of toilet, it must have sliding door for confirm the inside situation and reasonable height partition to consider the student's body-size. The shape of teacher's room must be open-type for supervising children but protect the entry of children. There is consideration for the material room and the sleeping room for all-day-long class.

  • Since open inquiry of science was formally introduced at the 2007 Revised Science Curriculum Course, the purpose and effect of it has been positively evaluated, and it is underlined continuously until the revised science education course in 2015. However, through many previous studies, there is still a lack of awareness of open inquiry of both students and teachers in the field, and it was revealed they are continually appealing confusion and difficulties. Therefore, in this research, we analyzed the causes that make it difficult to execute open inquiry, and developed differentiated open inquiry guide materials that can contribute to the realization of teachers and students. They were developed by the brain-based evolutionary approach to provide students with authentic science. The brain-based evolutionary approach is reflecting the evolutionary attributes and the brain functions associated activities of scientists. It was revealed that, in the same way as the pilot test results, the usefulness of the differentiated guide materials were very high, and there was a statistically significant difference in the science attitude. It was found that the application of the brain-based evolutionary approach had positively influenced the stage of determining the inquiry themes, and self-confidence that could be able to do as a scientist. Analysis of top and sub group types on the basis of inquiry ability showed that both groups are improved at science attitude by the differentiated guide materials. There was a positive effect on change in the self-perception of scientific creativity. We were able to see a positive change in the post survey for open inquiry-efficacy. The developed differentiated open inquiry guide materials contributed to the improvement of open inquiry-efficacy for both the teacher and student.

  • This study analyzed the process of steps in a program introducing Renzulli's enrichment triad model and various levels of posing open-ended problems of those who participated in the program for mathematics-gifted elementary students. As results, participants showed their abilities of problem posing related to real life in a program introducing Renzulli's enrichment triad model. From eighteen mathematical responses, gifted students were generally outstanding in terms of producing problems that demonstrated high quality completion, communication, and solvability. Amongst these responses from fifteen open-ended problems, all of which showed that the level of students' ability to devise questions was varied in terms of the problems' openness (varied possible outcomes), complexity, and relevance. Meanwhile, some of them didn't show their ability of composing problem with concepts, principle and rules in complex level. In addition, there are high or very high correlations among factors of mathematical problems themselves as well as open-ended problems themselves, and between mathematical problems and open-ended problems. In particular, factors of mathematical problems such as completion, communication, and solvability showed very high correlation with relevance of the problems' openness perspectives.

  • The purpose of this study is to find problems and to provide architectural design standards of the Learning Space Unit(L.S.U.) in Elementary Schools through the Post-occupancy Evaluation(POE). In this study, we found six major problems of the type of the L.S.U. in elementary schools. More than 50% of users expressed dissatisfactions in these items : size, safety, cooling facility, noise, privacy and primary meaning for its original purpose. After the interrelation-analysis, we checked pros and cons about each forms of L.S.U. It is the result of analysis of the layout method in L.S.U. 1) "$8.4m{\times}8.4m$" classroom unit got the highest positive responses 2) "2-classroom type" and "4-classroom type" got higher score than "3-classroom type" 3) "Whole faced type" 1) made more active Multi-space than "Partial faced type" 4) prefered prepared "Open-classroom" to "Closed-classroom" 5) 'Zoning type between L.S.U.s' couldn't influence to user's responses. Designers can consult those informations when they plan a new, remodeling and additional elementary school.
