The development of a simulation system requires many sub modules such as a dynamic module, a visualization module, etc. If a different freeware is used for each sub modules, it is hard to develop the simulation system by incorporating them because they use their own data structures. To solve this problem, a high-level data structure, called Dynamics Scene Graph Data structure (DSGD) is proposed, by wrapping data structures of two freeware; an Open Dynamics Engine (ODE) for the dynamic module and an Open Scene Graph (OSG) for the visualization module. Finally, to evaluate the applicability of the proposed data structure, it is applied to the block erection simulation in shipbuilding. The result shows that it can be used for developing the simulation system.
This paper analyzes the four game physics engines in terms of real time techniques. Real time physics is the technology that simplifies the physics-based simulation to apply for the real time applications such as game. Our study includes two commercial physics engines, Havok's Physics SDK and NVIDIA's PhysX SDK, and two open source projects, Open Dynamics Engine and Bullet physics engine. As a result, most of them covers rigid body dynamics and some include either deformable body simulation or fluids simulation, or both. For real time simulation, they adopt the simplified numerical methods, the effective in collision detection/response, and also use the parallel processing hardwares, i.e., multi core CPU, Physics processing unit(PPU), or graphics processing unit(GPU).
Response characteristics of the CVT system for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) are investigated. From the experiment, CVT ratio control algorithm for the optimal engine operation is obtained. To investigate the effect of the CVT system dynamic characteristics on the HEV performance, a hardware in the loop simulation (HILS) is performed. In the HILS, hardwares of the CVT belt-pulley and hydraulic control valves are used. It is found that the engine performance by the open loop CVT ratio control shows some deviation from the OOL in spite of the RCVs open loop control ability. To improve the engine performance, a closed loop control of the CVT ratio is proposed with variable control gains depending on the shift direction and the CVT speed ratio range by considering the nonlinear characteristics of the RCV and CVT belt-pulley dynamics. The HILS results show that the engine performance is improved by the closed loop control showing the operation trajectory close to the OOL.
Recently, increasing numbers of games and simulators are being implemented by employing the physically-based modeling techniques for better realism. In this paper, we propose the implementation techniques for overhead crane simulator based on ODE, the well-known open source dynamic engine. By comparing the dynamic behavior of the proposed system with a commercial engine based simulator, the physical plausibility and the effectiveness of the ODE based OHC simulator are verified. We expect the proposed the OHC simulator can be successfully utilized for virtual training in various educational institutes.
This paper deals with mathematical modeling of a 75-ton open-cycle Liquid Propellant Rocket Engine (LPRE) and the steady state simulation based on a nominal operating point. Each component of open-cycle LPRE may be classified into seven major categories using thermodynamics and dynamics characteristics. To simplify the simulation model of LPRE in this paper, we used four govern equations with assuming no heat transfer process. We confirmed the mathematical model of LPRE by using the error ratio and comparing the experiment data and simulation data in steady state, and checked the stability with the linearized model. Finally, we demonstrated the simulation model as compared to the transient response of experimental data.

In this paper, the general mathematical model of LRE(Liquid Rocket Engine) is presented. For the analysis about the trend of dynamics and the stability of open type LRE, it is transformed to linear model by Laplace transform and synthesized to the linear complex model of LRE with Matlab/Simulink.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method has been used to investigate the axial force of automotive water pump. As the excessive axial force can make some unexpected problems like impeller interference and coolant leakage we have focused on finding the cause of axial force and its reduction in this paper. First, we have tested the closed type water pump with and without balance hole by the calculation methods. By examining the pressure contour around the impeller, we have found that the axial force arises not only from the pressure difference around shroud but also from the pressure difference around hub. So we have tested two impellers - one is normal open type impeller and the other is open type impeller with modified hub. The results show that the axial force reduction is about 150~200N for normal one and 700N@3000RPM for modified impeller. And the hydraulic efficiency which is important in aspect of engine fuel efficiency is reduced about 6.5% for normal one but increased 4%@3000RPM for modified impeller.
The comming of high speed computers with large memory size in recent years has allowed the practical development of codes which solve the Reynolds-averaged NAvier-Stokes (RANS) equations in three dimensions. Such codes are already used by the large engine manufacturers for the advanced design of some engine components. Different computational fluid dynamics approaches and turbulence models exist, and it seems essential today to establish their degree of validity for application to typical configurations in turbomachinery. In 1993 the Turbomachinery Committee of the IGTI of ASME has issued an open invitation to predict the flow details of an isolated transonic fan rotor called as NASA ROTOR 37. This paper reports this test case.

Swirl injectors are widely used for Liquid Rocket Engine(LRE) as fuel injection system and following researches are also being carried out throughout the world. Especially, solving combustion instability problem is essential for every type of LREs. In this study, cold test was carried out for open type swirl injector as a fundamental research to solve combustion instability problem. Pressure fluctuation was applied to the inlet flow coming into the injector and the following response characteristics were observed. The effect of swirl chamber geometry was also studied by changing both swirl chamber length and diameter.

The introduction of autonomous underwater gliders (AUGs) specifically addresses the reduction of operational costs that were previously prohibited with conventional autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) using a "scaling-down" design philosophy by utilizing the characteristics of autonomous drifters to far extend operation duration and coverage. Long-duration, wide-area missions raise the cost and complexity of in-water testing for novel approaches to autonomous mission planning. As a result, a simulator that supports the rapid design, development, and testing of autonomy solutions across a wide range using software-in-the-loop simulation at faster-than-real-time speeds becomes critical. This paper describes a faster-than-real-time AUG simulator that can support high-resolution bathymetry for a wide variety of ocean environments, including ocean currents, various sensors, and vehicle dynamics. On top of the de facto standard ROS-Gazebo framework and open-sourced underwater vehicle simulation packages, features specific to AUGs for ocean mapping are developed. For vehicle dynamics, the next-generation hybrid autonomous underwater gliders (Hybrid-AUGs) operate with both the buoyancy engine and the thrusters to improve navigation for bathymetry mappings, e.g., line trajectory, are is implemented since because it can also describe conventional AUGs without the thrusters. The simulation results are validated with experiments while operating at 120 times faster than the real-time.
