Satisfaction of Preparatory Year Students at Umm Al-Qura University with Distance Learning During Covid-19

  • During the past two years, the education systems in the world witnessed unprecedented turmoil due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, as most schools and universities in the world closed their doors to more than 1.5 billion students, or more than 90% of the total learners, according to recent figures issued by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics. Education experts have agreed that post- coronavirus education will not be the same as before, especially with the increasing use of modern technology in education. One of the most important new patterns with a structure digital in education is distance education, this style has been used, in many countries of the world, as an alternative to traditional education, since the beginning of the pandemic. In Saudi Arabia, this type of education has been used in all educational institutions, starting from kindergarten until the postgraduate level, as an alternative to face-to-face education to preserve the health and safety of students and workers in educational institutions. This study aimed to explore the level of satisfaction of preparatory year students on distance learning in their first year of study at Umm Al-Qura University. The findings of this study showed that students in the preparatory year were satisfied with their online learning experience. In addition, the results revealed that there was no effect for gender and location of study on students' level of satisfaction. Saudi universities should continue to work to create a suitable learning environment for students at the e-learning level.

A Study of the Effects of Learner Characteristics on the Self-Regulated Learning Ability: A Comparison of Korea and China

  • The purpose of the study is to report differences in the effects of learner characteristics on the self-regulated learning (SRL) abilities between Chinese and Korean distance learners by using a structured SRL scale. A standardized 54-item self-regulated learning scale (SRAS) was used. The reliability was tested both in China and Korea which showed the scale had good reliability. The comparative study were conducted by administering the SRAS on 1999 Chinese distance learners from the Open Distance Education Center of Beijing Normal University and 1941 Korean distance learners from H Cyber University. Data on four dimensions of SRL - planning, control, regulating, and evaluation - were analyzed using 't-test' and 'ANOVA' with regards to the learner characteristics such as gender, age, prior education level, semesters, location and major. Results indicated that the average participant had an above medium level of SRL ability in all of the four dimensions. There were significant differences in the self-regulated learning ability between Chinese and Korean distance learners. Chinese distance learners scored higher in SRAS than Korean distance learners. The effects of learner characteristics on the SRL ability showed different patterns in the two countries. As for gender, male learners scored better in SRL than female learners in China, whereas it was just the opposite in Korea. No age differences were found in China, but Korean data exhibited a consistent age effect in all dimensions. In Korea, the age group older than 46 scored the highest, followed by the group between 35 to 45 years old, the group between 26 to 35 years old and the group younger than 25. As for location, Korean distance students from metropolitan were better than those from other regions, whereas it was on the contrary in China, albeit the location effect was not statistically significant. Prior education level had a clear and consistent effect on the SRL ability in both countries: the distance learners from junior colleges had better planning, regulating and evaluating abilities than those who came from senior high schools. These results have been discussed in various contexts of distance/online education as well as in relation to different culture between China and Korea. The results will also have implications for designing distance and online learning generally.

  • In this paper, the results of previous studies and surveys conducted in this study were compared and analyzed to find out how the actual condition of distance learning being conducted due to COVID-19 is changing. As a result, it was found that the'content-oriented class' is being used the most in the current online class, and teachers are spending a lot of time preparing for class. In addition, it was found that' providing appropriate contents as learning materials' is the first item to be supported for online classes. Therefore, in order to improve online classes in the future, it is needed that learning materials that can be used to create class content should be provided to teachers sufficiently. Also, IT equipment and network expansion and the training of teachers for distance learning should be provided.

Evaluate Students' Interaction and Happiness in Distance Learning Among Students with Learning-Difficulties During Covid-19 Pandemic

  • This study aimed at Evaluate Students' Interaction and Happiness in Distance Learning Among Students with Learning-Difficulties, by identifying the level of students' interaction in distance education and differences between them, as well as its impact on their happiness to learn. To achieve the aim of the study, two scales were designed for this purpose and were applied to a sample consisting of (310) individuals. The results showed that the level of students' interaction through the e-learning platform was at a high level. The results also showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the mean scores of males and females in the scale of students' interaction through the e-learning platform. There was no statistically significant difference between them in their happiness for distance learning via the online platform. There were also no statistically significant differences related to the grade variable in the level of interaction through the electronic platform and in the happiness to learn, while there was a positive statistically significant effect of interaction through the electronic platform on students' happiness to learn.

Strategies for Revitalizing E-Learning Through Investigating the Characteristics of E-Learning and the Needs of Distance Learners in the Domestic Universities in Korea (국내 대학 e-러닝의 운영 특징 및 수강자 요구 조사를 통한 활성화 방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the feasible strategies to vitalize e-learning through investigating the characteristics of e-learning and the evaluations of distance learners on online courses in the domestic universities in Korea. First, in order to accomplish this, 10 Universities and 17 Cyber Universities were selected to explore their characteristics and main projects of e-learning for the administration level investigation. Secondly, content analysis of the bulletin board systems(BBS) and in-depth interviews on distance learners in Cyber Universities were conducted for the user level investigation. The results revealed that Universities in Korea were focused on establishing mobile or smart campuses, diversifying online educational contents, enhancing online interactive systems, and educating e-learning system and smart device utilization. However, distance learners reported that mobile e-learning lacked stability when taking online courses despite its convenience for purpose of academic administration. In addition, distance learners requested the social application workshops to improve on their learning experience as well as the interactions among peers. Therefore, it is important to focus more on how to establish the education-oriented e-learning environment rather than how to implement the administrative projects to animate e-learning in the domestic universities in Korea.

Distance Learning for Students with Intellectual Disability during the Emerging Coronavirus Pandemic: Opportunities and Challenges from Parents' Perspectives

  • Distance learning for students with intellectual disabilities can prove beneficial, particularly if adjusted to their educational characteristics and needs. This study seeks to identify the views of parents living in Saudi Arabia, regarding the opportunities offered by distance learning for students with intellectual disabilities, alongside their challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research employed qualitative methods using semi-structured interviews with six parents of students with intellectual disabilities. The results revealed a number of both opportunities and challenges, including issues related to the family, in addition, the data highlighted difficulties related to the educational process (i.e. a lack of variety of educational methods) and technical issues related to access to the Internet and the insufficient computer skills of both teachers and students. The findings have several important implications for future practice, including the need for training workshops for parents concerning the online platform, as well as further research to determine students' perspectives of their experiences with distance learning.

  • In this paper, from the pervious studies investigating the current status of distance learning due to COVID-19, the needs of teachers for effective distance learning were analyzed. As a result, it was found that support related to distance learning contents was necessary. Specifically, it is necessary to establish a platform specialized for content production for distance learning, expand teacher training related to content production and operation, and improve the copyright system related to content production. In addition, since distance classes differ from those of back-to-school classes in system and characteristics, it is necessary to supplement the institutional aspects for distance classes. It is judged that it is necessary to support the evaluation method suitable for distance learning, the authority to operate the curriculum, and the learning management system. In addition, it was analyzed that it is necessary to expand the infrastructure for distance learning, and a structure and platform for self-directed improvement programs and self-directed distance learning are needed to prevent the learning gap problem from repeating due to distance learning.

A Case Study of Online Practice Activities in Non-face-to-face Class - 'Introduction to Electric Circuits and Lab' Course (비대면 수업에서 온라인 실습활동의 사례- '기초전기회로 및 실습' 교과목을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to design and operate non-face-to-face online practice class in engineering education, and to explore students' perceptions and effectiveness of them. To this end, after developing and implementing a strategy for non-face-to-face online practice activities in the 'Introduction to Electric Circuits and Lab' course, the questionnaire responses of 47 learners were analyzed, and the group differences were investigated using Kruskal-Wallis test. As a result, it was found that students' perceptions of non-face-to-face online practice class were positive in terms of learning effect, learning convenience, interaction, and satisfaction. The group difference according to the face-to-face/non-face-to-face preference method was found to be higher in the group that preferred non-face-to-face class in terms of learning convenience, interaction and satisfaction. As for the group difference according to the number of questions and answers of the learners, the group who answered the question showed a higher awareness of the learning convenience and interaction than the group that did not. In addition, implications for designing a learning environment for non-face-to-face online practice classes were presented.

A Study on the Simulation-Based Electric Control Panel Distance Learning Model (시뮬레이션 기반의 전기 제어 패널 원격 교육 모델에 관한 연구)

  • Virtual simulation education, which is one of the methods of executing engineering education, is spreading. In general online education, only theoretical learning-centered lessons and practical training of simple small projects are conducted remotely, and it is necessary to disseminate various educational contents. Due to the spread of smart factories these days, most producers use automatic control to produce, inspect and package their products. The operation of automation equipment is controlled by using electricity, and electricity-related learning is operated in various departments. Due to the characteristics of electricity, it is difficult to learn online due to safety issues and high cost of practical equipment. In this paper, we provide a simulation-based electrical control panel distance learning model to improve the sense of accomplishment of education related to electrical training. Through the experiment of the proposed model, it was confirmed that the learning was more satisfied with the virtual simulation education than the online education using the existing equipment. It is expected that it can be used as a basic course for automation equipment education in the future.
