Business Strategies of Japanese Newspaper Companies: Top-level Managers' Perception and Reacting toward the Newspaper Crisis (일본 신문기업의 경영전략 연구: 경영진의 위기인식과 대응책을 중심으로)

  • This paper reviews the problems and opportunities of Japanese newspaper industry. In the focus are particularly issues related to causes of the crisis and reacting strategies overcoming the crisis. To answer the questions, we conducted in-depth interviews with top-level managers of major newspaper companies in Japan. Secondary data were gathered to complement the interview. Top managers mainly perceived the causes of the crisis as young readers' alienation from newspaper due to the change of media environment and structural factors such as increasing production/distribution costs and diminishing appeals for advertisers. They are implementing several strategies to overcome this crisis - developing newspaper content for young readers; packaging customized on-off line advertisement; extending news distribution via online and mobile platforms; diversifying business into diverse sectors such as real-estate; enhancing brand equity of newspaper; and collaborating with rival newspaper companies in operating news site and joint printing/distribution. Lessons from the case of Japanese newspaper industry may be useful starting points for the Korean newspaper companies agonizing for diminishing circulation and advertising revenues.

Personalized Advertising Techniques on the Internet for Electronic Newspaper Provider (전자신문 제공업자를 위한 인터넷 상에서의 개인화된 광고 기법)

  • The explosive growth of the Internet and the increasing popularity of the World Wide Web have generated significant interest in the development of electronic commerce in a global online marketplace. The rapid adoption of the Internet as a commercial medium is rapidly expanding the necessity of Web advertisement as a new communication channel. if proper Web advertisement could be suggested to the right user, then effectiveness of Web advertisement will be raised and it will help company to earn more profit. So, this article describes a personalized advertisement technique as a part of intelligent customer services for an electronic newspaper provide. Based on customers history of navigation on the electronic newspapers pages, which are divided into several sections such as politics, economics, sports, culture, and so on, appropriate advertisements (especially, banner ads) are chosen and displayed with the aid of machine learning techniques, when customers visit to the site. To verify feasibility of the technique, an application will be made to one of the most popular e-newspaper publishing company in Korea.

  • Information boards installed in Seoul subway stations are currently in four languages: Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese. Informational announcements are provided to inform the main information or operation information through the LCD monitor installed in the train and in Korean. However, users are confused because the subway guide board screen displays advertisements more heavily than driving information As a research method, we grasped the current status and problems of the subway guide board installed on the Seoul subway, and presented an improved new subway guide board drafts. An online survey was conducted on 67 people, ranging from teens to 60s who mainly use the Seoul Metro. As a result of the study, the screen design is different for each boarding route, so it is necessary to unify the subway guide board that provides only necessary information. In particular, since the user transfers the subway several times in order to move from place to place, the subway guide board design should function as an emergency disaster guide or boarding information, not an advertising signboard.

Effect of Clothing Interest on Party Preference and the Construction of Party Unities according to Party Wear Types (의복 관심이 파티 선호에 미치는 영향과 파티복 유형별 파티 통일체 구성)

  • This study investigated the effect of clothing interest on party preference and suggested four party unities according to party wear types. A hypothesized model based on consumer innovativeness, clothing interest, party benefit, party interest and party preference was tested to determine the effect of clothing interest on party preference. Party unities were constructed according to party wear types along with party place, party food, and party music. Data was collected through two online surveys. The population of the survey was female consumers in their twenties. Descriptive statistics, factor analysis, reliability, correlations, and regressions were applied to the data of 305 samples. As a result, positive tendency toward consumer innovativeness, clothing interest, party benefit, party interest and party preference was observed in young female consumers with significant relations among five variables. Party preference was well-explained from the hypothesized research model, but the direct path from clothing interest to party interest was identified as insignificant. The most preferred party elements of place, food, music and wear was garden, barbecue, house music and mini dress, respectively. Four party unities according to party wear types were constructed and suggested based on the correlation analysis results between party wear and other party elements. The concept of party unity is useful to establish marketing strategies such as advertising and experience marketing in the party wear industry.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of perceived enjoyment and user's characteristics on the intention of continuous use when users play social network games on a mobile device. In addition, the study empirically investigated the mediating effect of flow experience in this process. To fulfill the purpose, this study conducted a survey on 244 college students and collected data. When the collected data was analyzed, the followings were known. First, perceived enjoyment, and both self-efficacy and innovation propensity of user's characteristics turned out to have a positive (+) effect on the intention of continuous use in mobile social network game. Second, in the process, it was known that flow experience played a mediating role. These findings are expected to be useful data in developing game contents of high quality or making a marketing strategy for continuous improvement of online social network game industry. In addition, future studies are expected to generalize the research to various age groups.

  • Fundamental problems of e-commerce are exaggerated advertising of products, lack of trust in products or suppliers, and false reviews. As a solution, I have merged the concept of trust service embedded in social network service(SNS) with commercial domain to develop a new type of service called "Reliable SNS Commerce Service". The contents developed in this paper are as follows: first, online community functions for users to provide services; second, commerce functions; and third, functions for linking SNS and commerce. Through the reliability information presented in this paper, the seller provides more reliable and objective purchase information to the buyer about the sales items, thereby contributing to the sales by increasing the probability of the actual purchase. The buyer can purchase the higher-quality products with confidence. The service providers can gain the reputation as a reliable site for purchasing members. In conclusion, this paper provides a positive effect to all the participants, which will contribute to the development of a new commerce market and activation of electronic commerce.

Types of Media Combination and Strategy of Interactivity in Digital Signage: A Case Study in view of Media Creative (디지털 사이니지의 매체결합 유형과 상호작용 전략 -유형별 미디어 크리에이티브 사례분석을 중심으로)

  • This study aims to suggest practical ways to interact effectively with consumers based on current situation of 'media creative' and media use patterns. Cases of digital signage are reviewed in the perspective of cross media, and the strategic meanings of cross media are explored according to interactivity. Results are collected through 'Naver' search engine service, and can be possibly assorted into five media combined types: SNS-combined, QR codes or Augmented Reality(AR)-combined, Brand App(application)-combined, Online to Offline-combined, and Behavioral factors-combined ones. Some strategic suggestions on media creative are given for effective interaction with consumers.

The Effect of Influencer Factors in Personal Media Contents on Purchase Intention (1인 미디어 콘텐츠의 인플루언서 요인이 상품 구매 의도에 미치는 영향: 브랜드 진정성의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study is to examine the effects of personal media influencer's source credibility (attractiveness, trustworthiness, expertise) and content authenticity on brand authenticity and product purchase intention. An online survey was conducted, on which the respondents were asked to watch the embedded contents of the influencer provided on YouTube before answering the questionnaire. The results of the regression analysis showed that both influencer expertise and content authenticity had a positive effect on brand authenticity. Moreover, brand authenticity had a positive effect on purchase intention and had a mediating effect between purchase intention and content authenticity. The findings are meaningful in that they not only analyze empirical advertising effects of personal media and media contents but also expand the scope of research on authenticity. This study also provides strategic implications for personal media influencers and companies which want to collaborate with influencers.

How SNS Brand Personality Affect Mobile Native Ad Attitude (SNS 브랜드 성격이 모바일 네이티브 광고 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the brand personality factors of SNS based on SNS consumers and to examine the effect of SNS brand personality factors on the recognition of mobile native ads in SNS. As a property of mobile native advertisement, research model is suggested by introducing information, reliability, entertainment, interferences, and interactivity as research variables. And SNS users were surveyed. Through the online survey, 341 copies were used for the analysis. According to the results of the analysis, five characteristics of SNS brand personality factors such as 'sincerity', 'enthusiasm', 'charm', 'practical', and 'community' were derived. Among these, 'sincerity', 'enthusiastic', and 'community' brand attributes have a positive effect on most of mobile native advertising attributes, but 'practical' brand characteristics negatively. The attractiveness of the brand was not related to the mobile native advertisement.

  • The case of South Korea's Internet newspapers, harmful advertising is illegal but rampant. The children and youth are not protected, so effective measures are urgently required. Therefore, to achieve self-regulation, a discrimination system model using collective intelligence and collective emotions is proposed. This study is to suggest a Discrimination System Model of harmful contents using collective intelligence and collective emotions as the actual program of self-regulation. The Discrimination System model forms the level of harmful contents by using contents, form, text, size as well as the implied and reminiscent story of image as discriminant factors of a group testing. The formed level is established for harmful contents discriminant criteria after going through the process of generalization again. It can be not clear and ambiguous for internet newspaper banner ads to be measure the level of harmfulness. This Discrimination System will have the strengths of resolving this problem.
