  • This study was conducted to investigate the current status of online classes and evaluations during the COVID-19 pandemic and the satisfaction of students attending the College of Korean Medicine. A survey was conducted with students enrolled in Dongguk University's College of Korean Medicine. The questionnaire was divided into four areas asking about online lectures, laboratory practice, clinical practice, and evaluation experience. The items were composed of multiple-choice, a 5-point scale, and subjective type. After distributing the Google form address through SNS and LMS, only those who agreed to the questionnaire were responded anonymously. 149 out of 457 enrolled students responded. 98.7% of students experienced online lectures, and more frequently experienced real-time online lectures (98.6%) than recorded lectures (43.5%). Overall satisfaction with online lectures was 3.99 on average. 80.5% of the students experienced the online experiment and practice class, and the overall satisfaction with it was 3.29 on average. 1.3% of students experienced online clinical practice. 86.6% of students experienced online evaluation, and when asked about the fairness of the test, the average score was 3.99. Satisfaction with online lectures and evaluations is generally high, so it is expected to be used as an effective learning tool in the future. However, it seems that facility improvement and technical training of instructors are necessary. In experimental and practical education, the satisfaction level is lower than that of online lectures, so it seems necessary to develop a new online program and to prepare a safe offline education system.

  • This study is to identify whether three types of online instruction (text-based, video-based, and video-based instruction without text) and age category have a different influence on students' comprehension and motivation. Online students were randomly assigned to one of six groups, and they attended two-week online lectures via Course Management System. The comprehension test and the short form of IMMS were implemented when 114 participants accomplished two-week online lectures. The results revealed that using instructional video in online instruction is more effective instructional medium than text only in order to promote learner's motivation. Besides, older adults aged 41-60 are significantly different from younger adults (21-40 years old) in terms of students' comprehension. Furthermore, three types of online instructions are likely to be influenced by age category.

  • This paper describes an attempt to integrate flip teaching into a language classroom by adopting wikispaces as an online learning platform. The purpose of this study is to examine student perceptions of the effectiveness of using video lectures and wikispaces to foster active participation and collaborative learning. Flipped learning was implemented in an English writing class over one semester. Participants were 27 low intermediate level Korean university students. Data collection methods included background questionnaires at the beginning of the semester, learning experience questionnaires at the end of the semester, and semi-structured interviews with 6 focal participants. Because of the significance of video lectures in flip teaching, oCam was used for making weekly online lectures as a way of pre-class activities. Every week, online lectures were posted on the school LMS system (moodle). Every week, participants met in a computer room to perform in-class activities. Both in-class activities and post-class activities were managed by wikispaces. The results indicate that the flipped classroom facilitated student learning in the writing class. More than 53% of the respondents felt that it was useful to develop writing skills in a flipped classroom. Particularly, students felt that the video lectures prior to the class helped them improve their grammar skills. However, with respect to their satisfaction with collaborative works, about 44% of the participants responded positively. Similarly, 44% of the participants felt that in-class group work helped them interact with the other group members. Considering these results, this paper concludes with pedagogical suggestions and implications for further research.

Faculty members who taught online in the first semester of 2020 at Yonsei University College of Medicine in South Korea were surveyed. The results of the survey were analyzed in June 2020. There were 88 respondents (35.1% of 251): 59 professors (67.0%), 16 associate professors (18.2%), and 13 assistant professors (14.8%). Their specialties lay in basic medicine (25.0%), clinical medicine (65.9%), and research and special purposes (9.1%). Sixteen participants (18.2%) had previous experience in online lectures; 23 (26.1%) reported that preparation time for online lectures was the same as before; 65 (73.9%) reported that the preparation time had increased; 38 (43.2%) faced difficulties in preparation and lecturing online, and among them 16 (42.1%) indicated inadequate interaction with students; 11 (28.9%) needed extra preparation time; and 11 (28.9%) attributed their difficulties to technical issues with the online platform. Participants' satisfaction with online lectures was low (p<0.001). In the free response question on overall experience with online education, 38.3% mentioned the need for an instructional design that allows students to actively participate and interact with professors, 29.5% mentioned the need for the establishment of an information & communications technology system, and 17.0% mentioned the necessity of faculty development. To prepare for the current pandemic and more in the long term, an appropriate educational support system must be constructed, and a learner-centered instructional design that enables wider interactions and active learning is needed.

  • After COVID-19, various metaverse platforms for online lectures are being provided. Most of the classrooms are tiered type, and they are divided into intensive classrooms and open classrooms depending on the shape of the classrooms. Intensive classrooms provide a one-sided lecture format, so there are many difficulties in conducting communication-based classes that carry out team missions like PBL classes. In this study, we propose a metaverse classroom that applies the functions of a multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), one of the game genres suitable for PBL classes. The proposed system provides various interaction techniques for PBL classes. We evaluated user satisfaction when this was applied to actual classes. As a result of the evaluation, it was found that users preferred text and voice chatting more than video chatting and solving missions like games was very helpful in online classes.
