  • A survey of food intake and waste rate on 60 Korean style restaurants in Seoul. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The total served weight of Pibimbab(mixed rice) was 475.66 g per person, waste rate was 6.0%, frequent side dishes were bae-chu kimchi, kak-du-gi, suk-ju-namul by the order. 2. Han- jeong-sik(Korean style full course food) were served with many kinds and varied numbers of side dishes, and waste rate of those were higher than other menu items. 3. The average serving size of Naeng-myeun(Cold noodle) was 641.00 g, and the waste rate was 11.1%. The waste rate of side dishes was about zero. 4. Man-du kuk(dumpling soup) was served 695.34 g. Most of side dishes served has high waste rate which is more than 50%, average. 5. Seol-nong tang(meat soup) was served 755.70 g, side dishes of that were simple such as kak-du-ki or paek kimchi. The average waste rate of side dishes was about 40%. Yuk-gae-jang(Hot meat soup) was 494.83 g a person, waste rate of that were 24.1%, and minimum and maximum waste rate of side dishes were 3.3, 100%, respectively. 6. Kimchi chigae(Kimchi stew) and Doen-jang chigae(fermented soy stew) were served with varied number of side dishes. 7. Deong-sim gui(grilled meat) and Pulgogi(grilled meat with sauce) were served 196.83 g and 308.98 g. The average waste rate of those were 0.7% and 5.8%, respectively. • The concept of biostimulation of wounds by low-level laser therapy(LLLT) is attracting considerable attention. Although its effect on whole tissues has been studied quite extensively, the biological and cellular mechanisms underlying LLLT have not been clarified. In an experimental radius fracture in rabbits, Tang and Chai reported that LLLT enhanced the activity of red blood cells, macrophages, fibroblasts, chondrocytes, and osteoclasts within the fracture area. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of LLLT with a GaAlAs diode laser device on bone healing in rabbit mandibular fractures. We use 12 rabbits for this study. All rabbits were fractured mandible angle area using saw in anesthetic condition. In control group(n=6), none treatment was performed at fracture site. In experimental group(n=6), LLLT with a GaAlAs diode laser was radiated at fracture site daily for 7 days. All rabbits were sacrificed at 6 weeks later from performed fracture day. We studied the immunohistochemical staining of CD34 and Vimentin and the histochemical analysis for calcium and phosphorus content. The results were as follows. 1. In the histological and immunohistological staining, after 6week, fibroblasts, osteogenic cells and collgen fibers were observed more in experimental group than in control group. 2. In the histochemical analysis, the amount of calcium and phosphorus contents of the experimental group were more than the control group. From the results obtained, we suggest that the bone healing is stimulated by low-level laser irradiation in bone fractures.

  • 1. Objects This paper was written in order to understand the formative process of Soyangin pharmacology. 2. Methods We analysis Soyangin pharmacology through pathology and new prescription in ${\ulcorner}$Gabobon(甲午本)${\lrcorner}$ and ${\ulcorner}$Sinchukbon(辛丑本)${\lrcorner}$ of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\lrcorner}$. 3. Results and Conclusions New prescription of Soyangin in ${\ulcorner}$Gabobon${\lrcorner}$ is same or similar to that in ${\ulcorner}$Chobonkwon${\lrcorner}$. So we can recognize that almost Soyangin pharmacology of ${\ulcorner}$Gabobon${\lrcorner}$ is made when Dongmu write ${\ulcorner}$Chobonkwon${\lrcorner}$. And the maintenance of Yin-Qi is key point of Soyangin's pharmacology New prescription of Soyangin is made by regular rules in ${\ulcorner}$Sinchukbon${\lrcorner}$. Dongmu say that Hyungkae(荊芥) Bangpung(防風) Kanghwal(羌活) Dokhwal(獨活) is herbs for descending-Yin, and Sukjihwang(熟地黃) Sansuyoo(山茱萸) Bokryung Taeksa(澤瀉) or Saengjihwang(生池黃) Sukgo(石膏) Jimo(知母) is herbs for ascending-Yang And all new prescription except Sukjihwangkosam-tang(熟地黃苦蔘湯) is composed of asneding-Yang and descending-Yin's herbs. New prescription of the exterior disease contained all descending-Yin's herbs and that of the interior disease contained all ascending-Yang's herbs completly. Namely when ${\ulcorner}$Gabobon${\lrcorner}$ was written Soyangin pharmacology is the maintenance of Yin-Qi by selecting prescription of cold character. And when ${\ulcorner}$Sinchukbon${\lrcorner}$ was written, base sprit of Soyangin pharmacology was not changed. Pharmacology was added ascending-Yang and descending-Yin at a time.

  • Maek Kyoung(Mai Jing, 脈經) is the first chinese specialized book of diagnostics written by Wang Hee(Wang xi, 王熙) from Seo Jin(xi jin, 西晉). He assorted the contents with pulse and medical examination from Nae Kyoung(nei jing, 內經), Nan Kyoung(nan jing, 難經), Sang Han Ron(shang han lun, 傷寒論) and Jung Jang Kyoung(zhong cang jing, 中藏經). And united with his own research, he explains medical examination and the way of talking the pulse by classifying into entrance and class. Maek Kyoung(Mai Jing, 脈經) was imported Korea by Ji Chong(zhi cong, 知聰) AD 561, and he passed through Ko Ku Ryeo(gao gou li, 高句麗) with Nae Wei Jeon(nei wai dian, 內外典), Yak Seo(yao shu, 藥書), Myung Dang Do(ming tang tu, 明堂圖) and MaekKyoung(Mai Jing, 脈經) to be naturalized in Japan. This treatise make a special study of the second volume of the Maek Kyoung. It consists of the four chapters : Pyoung Sam Kwan Eum Yang E Sip Sa Ki Maek Je I1(平三關陰陽二十四氣脈第一), Pyoung In Young Sin Mun Ki Ku Jeon Hu Maek Je E(平人迎神門氣口前後脈第二), Pyoung Sam Kwan Byoung Hu Byoung Chi Eui Je Sam(平三關病侯幷治宜第三), and Pyoung Gi Kyoung Pal Maek Byoung Je Sa(平奇經八脈病第四). Bi Geup Choun Geum Yo Bang(備急千金要方) and Eui Hak Ip Mun(醫學入門) quoted from the contents in the second volume of Maek Kyoung, and Bin Ho Maek Hak(瀕湖脈學), Gi Kyoung Pal Maek Go(奇經八脈攷) and Maek Eo(脈語) extracted from contents in the second volume of the Maek Kyoung and requoted from this contents. Contents in the second volume of the Maek Kyoung have very valuable data like that, but the literature on this subject in the form of a treatise has not been yet in Korea. So I hope this study will be useful to develope Diagnostics by correcting translation and interpretation and fixing wrong translation.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to predict the weight loss by applying machine learning using real-world clinical data from overweight and obese adults on weight loss program in 4 Korean Medicine obesity clinics. Methods: From January, 2017 to May, 2019, we collected data from overweight and obese adults (BMI≥23 kg/m2) who registered for a 3-month Gamitaeeumjowi-tang prescription program. Predictive analysis was conducted at the time of three prescriptions, and the expected reduced rate and reduced weight at the next order of prescription were predicted as binary classification (classification benchmark: highest quartile, median, lowest quartile). For the median, further analysis was conducted after using the variable selection method. The data set for each analysis was 25,988 in the first, 6,304 in the second, and 833 in the third. 5-fold cross validation was used to prevent overfitting. Results: Prediction accuracy was increased from 1st to 2nd and 3rd analysis. After selecting the variables based on the median, artificial neural network showed the highest accuracy in 1st (54.69%), 2nd (73.52%), and 3rd (81.88%) prediction analysis based on reduced rate. The prediction performance was additionally confirmed through AUC, Random Forest showed the highest in 1st (0.640), 2nd (0.816), and 3rd (0.939) prediction analysis based on reduced weight. Conclusions: The prediction of weight loss by applying machine learning showed that the accuracy was improved by using the initial weight loss information. There is a possibility that it can be used to screen patients who need intensive intervention when expected weight loss is low.

  • To investigate the dietary behavior and food preference by the obesity index, 524 children (male 265, female 259) from 4 elementary schools in Gyeonggi area participated in this study. The overweight group included more boys (52.5%) than girls (47.5%). The overweight group had significantly higher values in height, weight, Obesity index (OI), Body mass index (BMI), and Rohrer index (RI) than the underweight or normal weight groups. The majority (43.4%) of children showed 11-20 minutes of eating time, and boys ate significantly rapidly than girls (p<0.00l). Snack was consumed 2-3 times a day, with the preference principally for ice-cream and cookies. The frequency of eating out was 1-2 times a month, representing 71.4% of subjects, and 73.3% of children preferred Korean style meals, followed by Western, Chinese and Japanese foods. Twigim (frying) was the preferred cooking method for vegetables, fish and meat. The food preference study showed that Ssalbap, Hyunmibap and Boribap were preferred in the rice group. For one-dish foods in the rice group, Jjajangbap, Kimchibokeumbap, Bokeumbap were preferred, with the tendency that boys preferred significantly more Curry rice (p<0.05) and Chickenbap (p<0.01) than girls. The preference for guk, jjigae, and tang group showed that Soegogimiyeokguk, Chamchikimchijjigae were preferred Boys preferred significantly more Samgyetang (p<0.05), Haemultang (p<0.05) and Yukgaejang (p<0.01) than girls, and girls preferred significantly more Kongbijijjigae (p<0.05) than boys. It is considered that organized and continuous nutritional education beginning in childhood, is necessary to for the development and formation of desirable dietary behaviors.

  • The plant kingdom is considered to be a repository of modern medicine, attributable to their rich source of bio-active molecules and secondary metabolites. It is indeed the Nutraceuticals that enhance immunity and ensure a healthier life because of their prophylactic and therapeutic values. Over centuries, papaya [Caricaceae; (Carica papaya Linn.)] is a renowned nutritious and medicinal plant. Each part of the papaya like root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit, seed, rinds, and latex has its own nutraceutical properties. It serves as food, cooking aid, and Ethnomedicine to prevent and treat wide-range of diseases and disorders. It has also been traditionally used as appetite enhancer, meat tenderizer, purgative, medicinal acne, abortifacient and vermifuge. Over decades, a series of scientific attempts were made to authenticate the nutraceutical properties of papaya. These studies validated that the papaya has antiplasmodial, antitrichochramal, antitrichomonal, antidengue, and anti-cancer activities. They have also exhibited that papaya possesses antiseptic, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and contraceptive features, and it helps in the management of sickle-cell anaemia, HIV, heart diseases and digestional disorders too. Nevertheless, the responsible bio-active molecules and their mode of actions remain indistinct and imprecise, and this calls for further pharmacological and clinical research on them. Conclusively, papaya is one of the naturally gifted plants; though its nutraceutical properties as a food or as a quasi-drug are poorly understood or undervalued by people. Accordingly, this scrutiny, demand for instigation of public health awareness campaigns to promote papaya consumption, so that the society shall acquire optimal benefits of papaya and in turn prevent and alleviate various diseases and illness.

  • The iron contents in the foodstuffs used for treatment of anemia as dietary treatments in Part Tang-Aik(湯液編) of Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam, (which was treatments of herb medicine. in Royal family) are studied on the purpose of comparing these Korean traditional and oriental herb medicine with modern nutrition and medicine, focusing especially upon the scientific values residing in them. The iron contents in grains, reptilla, feathered tribes, mammals, and fruits advised good for anemia in Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam are in average per 100g weight base, 8.6, 5.0, 6.5, 3.4, and 2.12 mg each respectively, while in thoes not advised good for anemia in the same part, the iron contents are 2.34, 2.63, 1.4, 2.21 and 0.97mg each respectively. To compare these two groups, in the foodstuffs advised good for anemia in Korean traditional herb medicine represented in Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam, the iron contents are much higher than in those not advised groups. However, in classes of vegetables and fishes, the iron contents are reversed. In conclusion, it is very difficult to say that all the dietary treatments advised in Korean traditional herb medicine are scientific in modern medical view point, however, it has some value doubtlessly to research Korean traditional herb medicine in modern aspect. Furthermore, in this study, Korean traditional medicine, arguing being built upon thousands years of experiences has been found .to have some scientific bases such as high iron contents in food stuffs advised good for anemia represented in Tong-Eui-Bo-Gam.
