  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of kale (Brassica oleracea acephala) juice supplementation on serum lipid levels and phospholipid (PL) fatty acid compositions in hypercholesterolemic men. Thirty-two men with hypercholesterolemia (>200 mg/dl) were recruited among the faculty and staff at Y University after annual health examinations. The subjects consumed 150 ml of kale juice per day for a 12-week intervention period. Dietary and anthropometric assessments were performed before and after supplementation, respectively, to ensure that the subjects maintained their usual diet and lifestyle throughout the intervention. Serum concentrations of HDL-cholesterol and the ratio of HDL-cholesterol to LDL-cholesterol were significantly increased (p<0.001) after intervention. Serum LDL-cholesterol concentration and atherogenic index were significantly reduced (p<0.001). Levels of 12:0, 14:0, $18:1{\omega}9$, $18:3{\omega}6$, and sum of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in serum pholspholipid (PL) were significantly increased, while $22:4{\omega}6$ level was significantly reduced (p<0.05). It can be speculated that kale juice, containing large amounts of antioxidant nutrients, contributes to changes of serum-PL-fatty acid compositions and the improvements of serum lipid profiles. This study demonstrates the supplementation of regular meals with kale juice may favorably affect serum lipid profiles and serum-PL fatty acid compositions and, hence, could lower the risks of coronary artery disease in men with hypercholesterolemia.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of different sources of $\omega$3 fatty acid in the diet with a similar polyunsaturated/saturated (P/S) fatty acid ratio and $\omega$6/$\omega$3 fatty acid ratio as well as excess DHA on the plasma fatty acid composition and cholesterol level of rats. Three experimental diets contained 10% (w/w) dietary lipids. The control diet and one treatment diet were corn oil-based diets with different $\omega$-3 fatty acid sources: perilla (CO) or fish oil (CF), respectively. In order to examine the effect of excess DHA, the other treatment diet (FO) was a fish oil-based diet with corn oil to supply essential fatty acids at the level of 1.8% (w/w) of the diet. Female Sprague Dawley rats were fed the experimental diets for 2 weeks prior to mating and throughout gestation and lactation. Pups were weaned to the same diet of dams at 21 days of age. Plasma fatty acid compositions and cholesterol contents were analyzed for pups at 3th, 7th and 10th week after birth. Plasma DHA concentrations increased significantly as the level of fish oil supplementation increased. Three-, seven- and ten-week old rats fed on CO diet which contained only $\alpha$-lino1enic acid as a $\omega$-3 fatty acid Source had Plasma DHA levels of 4.85%, 3.15% ana 2.47%, respectively, suggesting that rats at this period of development can convert $\alpha$-linolenic acid to DHA. But the ability to form DHA might be limited, since dietary DHA showed to be more effective in raising the plasma level of DHA. There was a significant negative correlation between DHA and cholesterol concentration of the rat plasma at 7th week (r=0.34, p<0.05) and l0th week after birth (r=036, p<0.05), proving the hypocholesterolemic effect of DHA.

  • The compositions of health functional food products (HFFP; 18 products) containing gamma linolenic acid (GLA; $C_{18:3}$, n-6) and omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) were investigated. The contents of index components (especially, GLA and omega-3) in HFFPs were monitored by GC-FID analysis. Among the GLA products (sample No. 1~8), the content of GLA in most samples (except sample No.6) ranged from 8.04 to 9.98 g/100 g. These results were suitable for the reference standard (more 7.0 g/100 g) of HFF. In the omega-3 products (sample No. 10 and 15) derived from harp seal oil (HSO), the total contents of EPA and DHA were 14.21-15.98 g/100 g, respectively. These values were suitable for the reference standard (more 12.0 g/100 g) of HFF. Besides, among the omega-3 products (sample No.9, 11~14, 16~18) derived from fish oil, the total content of EPA and DHA ranged from 24.11 to 31.20 g/100 g. These results were suitable for the reference standard (more 18.0 g/100 g) of HFF. In the result of TLC analysis, the HFFPs of 18 were mainly composed of triacylglycerols (TAGs). The content of trans fatty acid in 18 HFFPs was detected in less than 0.30 g/100 g. For the detection of trans fatty acid, $^1H$-NMR (600 MHz) can be used because chemical shift of trans fatty acid was observed at 5.3 ppm in this study.

  • Elelctrical properties of $BaTiO_3$ were characterized with addition of $Y_2O_3, CaO,SiO_2$ and Mn to develope the composition of PTC thermistor suitable as a current limiting device for automobile motor system. With the addition of 0.2 mol% $Y_{2}O_3$ to $BaTiO_3$, the minimum resistance of 16.5 ${\Omega}{\cdot}$cm was obtained at room temperature. $(Ba_{0.996}Y_{0.004})TiO_3$ exibited a minimum resistance of 50${\Omega}{\cdot}$cm with addition of 1.6 mol% $SiO_2$. The grain size of $(Ba_{0.996}Y_{0.004})TiO_3$ decreased from 34.95 ${\mu}$m to 13.4 ${\mu}$m and thus breakdown voltage could be improved by changing the composition as $(Ba_{0.996}Y_{0.004}Ca_{0.05}) TiO_3$ with substition of 5 mol% Ca into Basites. When 0.04 mol% Mn was added, the optimum PTCR properties could be obtained : the resistivity at room temperature and ${\rho}_{max}/{\rho}_{min}$ were 30~40${\Omega}{\cdot}$cm and $1.5{\times}10^5$ respectively.

  • The change in induced voltage according to the relationship of ground connection between the aluminum sheath layer and a conductor pair in a general telecommunication cable is analyzed. When a measurement is practiced under the condition of separated sheath grounds with an averaged ground resistance of $42.6{\Omega}$, the induced voltage decreases 10 % to the induced voltage without sheath grounds. The induced voltage decreases approximately 50 % in the case of a one-sided common ground and decreases by more than 90 % in the case of a both-sided common ground. This experimental result is similar to the values calculated using the methods of the ITU Directives. In addition, according to a comparison analysis utilizing this ITU method, the measurement error range will be below 10 % in the state of ground resistance of central office less than $10{\Omega}$ and for the terminal side with $100{\Omega}$ less or more.

  • The present study was carried out in atheroscleorotic New Zealend white(NZW) rabbits. to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with Korean pinenut oil, on plasma total fatty acid composition. In study I, NZW rabbits were fed 10 weeks on a commercial chow diet supplemented with 5% of energy as fats(soybean oil or pinenut oil) or 10% of energy as fats(soybean oil or pinenut oil) with the addition of 1% cholesterol to the diet. Nineteen fatty acids ranged from myristic acid (14:0) to cervonic acid (22:6 ${\omega}3$) were identified in all the samples. The c5, c9, $c12{\sim}18$ : 3 acid was not reported in the fatty acid methyl ester profiles of each group because it was included in the linoleic acid peak. The major constitutent fatty acids in the chow diet group were linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid and ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid. In the cholesterol group, oleic acid, linoleic acid and palmitic acid were the major fatty acids. In plasma of cholesterol-fed animals, the levels of 16:1 ${\omega}$ 7 and 18:1 1 ${\omega}$ 9 were increased. Linoleic acid was the major fatty acid in soybean oil/cholesterol and pinenut oil/cholesterol groups. Plasma linoleic acid levels were significantly incresed from 4 to 6% by the supplementation of 5% soybean or 5% pinenut oil in the cholesterol diet for 5 weeks, compared to cholesterol group. Plasma 16 : 1 ${\omega}$ 7 levels in animals fed with 5 or 10% pinenut oils were significantly lower than in those fed cholesterol for 5 weeks. After 10 weeks on the soybean oil and pinenut oil diet there were no significant differences in the fatty acid composition. In study II, the fatty acid composition was not affected by the types or levels of oils supplemented for 5 weeks. After 10 weeks on the oil diets 16:1 ${\omega}$ 7 and 18:1 ${\omega}$ 9 were decreased in 10% soybean in oil/cholesterol and 10% pinenut oil/cholesterol groups, compared to cholesterol group.

  • The humidity sensor containing ammonium salt was prepared from the copolymer of 2-methacryloxyethyl dimethyl 2-hydroxyethyl ammonium bromide (MDHAB)/MMA/DAEMA = 6/3/1. The humid membrane was fabricated on the gold/alumina electrode by dipping. The impedances were $298k{\Omega},\;11k{\Omega}$, and $2.3k{\Omega}$ at 40%RH, 70%RH and 90%RH, respectively, at $5^{\circ}C$ and the humidity-sensitive characteristics were suitable for low temperature humidity sensor. The temperature-dependent coefficient between $5^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ was found to be $-0.80%RH/^{\circ}C$ and the hysteresis falled in the ${\pm}2%RH$ range. The response time was found to be 38 sec for the relative humidity ranging from 34%RH to 88%RH at $20^{\circ}C$. The reliabilities such as temperature cycle, humidity cycle, high temperature and humidity resistance, electrical load stability, stability of long-term storage and water durability were measured and evaluated for the application as a humidity sensor.

  • Transparent conducting oxide films like ITO/Au/ITO and AZO/Au/AZO were fabricated with a sputter at a low-temperature of less then $70^{\circ}C$ and their crystallization and opto-electrical properties were studied. X-ray diffractiometry showed that single-ITO layer was amorphous, whereas, ITO of ITO/Au/ITO multi-layer was crystal. The ITO crystallization and its orientation depended on Au crystallization. Surface roughness of the ITO-multi-layers were in the range of 29-88% of that of ITO-single layer. ITO on amorphous gold layer had more rough surface than ITO on crystal gold. The gold layer between ITO improved electrical conductivity. Carrier density, mobility, resistivity and sheet resistance of ITO-single layer were $2.3{\times}10^{19}/cm^3$, $85{\times}cm^2$/Vs, $31{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$, and $310{\times}{\Omega}/cm^2$, respectively. Those of ITO/Au/ITO-multi-layers depended on Au-interlayer-thickness, which were in the range of $3.6{\times}10^{19}{\sim}4.2{\times}10^{21}/cm^3$, $43{\sim}85cm^2$/Vs, $0.17{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}25{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$, and $1.7{\sim}20{\times}{\Omega}/cm^2$, respectively. The sheet resistances of the single-layer ITO and the multi-layer ITO were 310 and $2.7{\sim}21{\Omega}/cm^2$, respectively. That of AZO/Au/AZO was $8.6{\Omega}/cm^2$, which was better than the single-layer ITO.

  • The mutually reactive copolymers poly[(vinylbenzyl chloride)-co-(n-butyl acrylate)-co-(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)] and poly[(4-vinylpyridine)-co-(n-butyl acrylate)-co-(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)] were synthesized for the humidity sensitive material by forming simultaneous quaternization. The humidity sensor showed an average resistance of 8.6 M$\Omega$, 310 k$\Omega$ and 12 k$\Omega$ at 30%RH, 60%RH and 90%RH, respectively. The hysteresis and temperature coefficient were $\pm$3%RH and -0.37~-0.40%RH/$^{\circ}C$. The introduction of n-BA and HEMA increased the resistance of the humidity sensor however it enhanced the adherence to the alumina substrate. The response time was 54 seconds changing from 33%RH to 85%RH and the difference of resistance was +0.2%RH after soaking in water for 2 hr.

  • The multi-layer PET film of ITO/ATO was prepared by a wet coating method to obtain the transparent film with a high conductance at low cost. ITO nano-particles were synthesized by a SAS method at 15 MPa and $50^{\circ}C$, where optimized rate of In/Sn was 65. Average diameter and resistivity of ITO obtained from SAS are $15{\pm}2nm$ and $4{\times}10^4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$. Coating solution was prepared at pH 10. Roughness (Ra), resistivity, and transmissivity of ATO film on PET are 9 nm, $5.5{\times}10^6{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, and 91%. The multi-layered film of ITO/ATO was obtained by solution including 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 ITO wt% on ATO layer. Roughness (Ra) of multi-layered film with 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 ITO wt% is 4, 10, 12, and 16 nm, respectively. Corresponding resistivity with an increasing ITO concentration is $3.7{\times}10^6$, $2.4{\times}10^6$, $8{\times}10^5$, and $2{\times}10^5{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$. Transmissivity of ITO/ATO film decreases as 89, 88, 86, and 82% with an increasing ITO concentration as 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 wt%.
