  • The Faculty of Engineering, Niigata University, Japan, obtained the scholarship in "Short-Stay and Short-Visit scholarship programs(SS-SV programs)" for both German and Japanese students in 2011 and 2012. Our short-term student exchange programs proved that a short-term stay in a foreign country worked as an initiator for the students' interest and it strengthen their will to study further more in foreign countries.

  • The nonlinear free-surface motions interacting with a floating body were investigated using the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method proposed by Koshizuka and Oka [6] for incompressible flow. In the numerical method, more realistic Lagrangian moving particles were used for solving the flow field instead of the Eulerian approach with a grid system. Therefore, the convection terms and time derivatives in the Navier-Stokes equation can be calculated more directly, without any numerical diffusion, instabilities, or topological failure. The MPS method was applied to a numerical simulation of predicting the efficiency of floating-type breakwater interacting with waves.

  • Species of the genus Pseudodiaptomus are reported as the major constituents in the fresh or brackish waters in the northeastern Asia (Suh et al., 1991; Oka et al., 1991). Of these species, P. inopinus (Burckhardt) and P. poplesia (Shen) are particularly numerous in spring and autumn (Suh et al., 1991; Shen and Song, 1979). Recently. we found a presence of two types of Pseudodiaptomus inopinus during the course of investigation on zooplankton from Korean estuaries. (omitted)

  • We herein propose a new design procedure of a flexible container ship model where the vertical bending and torsional vibration modes are similar to its prototype. To achieve similarity in torsional vibration mode shapes, the height of the shear center of the model must be located below the bottom hull, similar to an actual container ship with large opening decks. Therefore, we designed a ship model by imparting appropriate stiffness to the hull, using urethane foam without a backbone. We built a container ship model according to this design strategy and validated its dynamic elastic properties using a decay test. We measured wave-induced structural vibrations and present the results of tank experiments in regular and freak waves.

  • Turtle leeches have not been recorded in Korea, although they occur in geographically adjacent countries including China and Japan. This study describes a turtle leech, Ozobranchus jantseanus (Clitellata: Ozobranchidae), found from Reeve's turtle (Mauremys reevesii) in Korea. Of the 143 Reeve's turtles collected from the freshwater reservoir in Jinju City, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, 95 unidentified leeches were found in 8 (5.6%) individuals. The leeches had 22 somites with 11 pairs of externally exposed branchiae, body-sized posterior suckers, and spines on the dorsal surface. We identified these leeches as Ozobranchus jantseanus Oka, 1912 (Clitellata: Ozobranchidae). This species of turtle leeches found in Korea may fill the gap in the biodiversity of East Asian annulus.

  • To build a distribution model for Haemadipsa rjukjuana, we collected current occurrences of the species on Heuksando with adjacent islands. Based on current locations and 19 climate variables with DEM (digital elevation model), we built the MaxEnt (maximum entropy) species distribution model for H. rjukjuana in the islands. Then, we applied the MaxEnt model to the mainland of Korea with the current climate condition and topology. In addition to the current distribution scenario, we predicted the future distribution scenarios in Korea by Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) global climate models. Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) 585 of two CMIP6 models(GISS-E2-1 and INM-CM4-8) from 2040 to 2100 were used for the future projection.

  • Bacteriochlorophyll(BChl)-c containing species of green sulfur photosynthetic bacterium Chlorobium (ChI.) vibrioforme, which has BChl-d mainly, was detected. We obtained colonies on agar plates by spreading the liquid culture of ChI. vibrioforme f. sp. thiosulfatophilum strain NCIB 8327 which contained the high ratio of BChl-c/BChl-d, and transferred each colony into a new liquid medium. These cultures after growing were found to be classified into two categories. One possessed BChl-d as a light-harvesting pigment and the other did BChl-c. No colonies examined here contained both BChls-d and c. Therefore, the presence of both BChls-d and c in our cultures of ChI. vibrioforme was ascribed to the coexistence of two different cells which had BChl-d and c as the chlorosomal pigment, respectively. The change of pigment composition observed in our liquid cultures can be thus explained by the difference of growth rates between two kinds of cells.

  • The changes in the corpus callosum (CC) with age and gender remain largely subject to dispute, which might come from the different strategies for analyzing the size and shape of CC. We have investigated this issue by measuring some variables reflecting the spatial orientation of CC on magnetic resonance imaging in Koreans, which minimize individual variances in the brain. The subjects were composed of young adults in their twenties (51 male, 59 female) and elderly adults in their sixties and seventies (60 male, 71 female). The total area of CC, length and height of CC, the central angle and the four angles suggested by Oka et al. were measured. The whole area and the central angle of CC were not significantly affected by age and gender. The height and length of CC were significantly greater in elderly people. The angle connecting genu, upper notch of pons and splenium was significantly larger in the elderly group. Furthermore, all four angles were significantly different between male and female subjects. These results confirm that the spatial orientation of CC is influenced by age and gender.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the association between birth patterns (defined in terms of birth order and interval) with delayed breastfeeding initiation in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out using data from the Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey 2017. The weighted number of respondents was 5693 women aged 15-49 years whose youngest living child was less than 2 years old. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to evaluate associations between birth patterns and delayed breastfeeding initiation after adjusting for other covariates. Results: This study found that 40.2% of newborns in Indonesia did not receive timely breastfeeding initiation. Birth patterns were significantly associated with delayed breastfeeding initiation. Firstborn children had 77% higher odds of experiencing delayed breastfeeding initiation (adjusted odds ratio, 1.77; 95% confidence interval, 1.02 to 3.04; p<0.05) than children with a birth order of 4 or higher and a birth interval ≤ 2 years after adjusting for other variables. Conclusions: Firstborn children had higher odds of experiencing delayed breastfeeding initiation. Steps to provide a robust support system for mothers, especially first-time mothers, such as sufficient access to breastfeeding information, support from family and healthcare providers, and national policy enforcement, will be effective strategies to ensure better practices regarding breastfeeding initiation.

  • The violent free-surface motions and the corresponding impact loads are numerically simulated by using the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method, which was originally proposed by Koshizuka and Oka (1996) for incompressible flows. In the original MPS method, there were several shortcoming including non-optimal source term, gradient and collision models, and search of free-surface particles, which led to less-accurate fluid motions and non-physical pressure fluctuations. In the present study, how those defects can be remedied is illustrated by step-by-step improvements in respective processes of the revised MPS method. The improvement of each step is explained and numerically demonstrated. The numerical results are also compared with the experimental results of Martin and Moyce (1952) for dam-breaking problem. The current numerical results for violent free-surface motions and impact pressures are in good agreement with their experimental data.
